Chavez stirs anxiety over US military deal in Colombia

Full story: Christian Science Monitor

Controversy over Colombia's decision to host an expanded US military presence loomed over a summit Monday of South American leaders, which President Alvaro Uribe refused to attend for fear of a diplomatic ambush. Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez, who says the increased US presence in neighboring Colombia is aimed at overthrowing his leftist government, had sought a region-wide censure of the pending military cooperation agreement in the summit's closing statement. But other leaders who met privately with Mr. Uribe on his damage-control tour of seven nations last week were less inclined to condemn it outright.

I am very familiar with the situation in Colombia being an American married to a Colombian national. I own property in Colombia and the US and I have traveled to this great country several times per year since 1995. Colombia is really blossoming under Alvaro Uribe. It is becoming prosperous and security is greatly improved. Venezuela, on the other hand is afflicted by this would be dictator, Chavez. The educated Venezuelians hate him. Should he remain in power, he will absolutely ruin that country. The United States should establish a full-fledged base in Colombia and sign a mutual defense treaty like we have with Israel and Costa Rica-- I guarantee we will benefit a lot more from it than we have from the one with Israel. Besides, who listens to Iran? No reasonable person should. There is no reason two sovereign nations cannot share bases and it is certainly no business of this foul-mouthed peasant, Chavez. Viva Colombia!

Why is no one asking the question, "How many Russians are in Venezuela?"

I am married to a Colombian and I live in Bogotá.

Chavez would like to be a dictator of all South America.

It is great that the USA is helping Colombia get rid of the scum that FARC is. They are outlaws with no love for Colombia who run to Venezuela when the Colombia army gives chase and Chavez protects his friends.
