Ecuador heads for socialist reform of constitution

It is apparant today that the people have spoken. They have in essence given Correa their stamp of approval to rewrite the constitution. While the majority of people living in Ecuador (78%) voted for change, a reletavily some percentage remains skeptical. Many of us who live in the US and other countries abroad perhaps share the view that Correa may become authoritative and as a result copy his good frind Chavez. If the change is to produce positive and democratic results, I stand vigilent to the course of direction Correa takes now.

Correa's government has provided the framework for the current 'Constitutional Assembly'... However... it is from the populace that assembly-persons will be elected.

Hopefully social reforms are enacted to reflect the needs of a 'small country' in a globalized economy. It is aparent that Ecuador's vital infrastructure will be managed by the state (water, energy, intra-state highway system, health and education...) for the 'common good'... NOT SOLD TO INTERNATIONAL CORPORATE INTERESTS for the profit of the few shareholders and corrupt middle-men.

President Rafael Correa is a highly educated and intelligent man. I hope he succeeds in providing social justice for the people of Ecuador, just like President Hugo Chavez has been doing for his fellow citizens in Venezuela.

I am a US citizen. I was in Ecuador during the vote to convene an assembly to rewrite the constitution. Although an overwhelming majority voted YES, those who are more educated than the masses who voted YES are skeptical as to Correa's motives and do not like his leftist leaning toward Chavez. Ecuador is rich in resouces that have not been tapped and they must be exploited by Ecuadorians for the benefit of ALL Ecuadorians not sold to the highest bidder.

Hurray for President Correa of Ecuador. He is going to follow a great democratic leader President Chavez of Venezuela. Everyone pray Bush the liar and exploiter of iraqi oil does not invade Ecuador. As of 5/24/07 I personally don't like the foot steps he's taking behind Chavez! Like the currently "calmed" down attempt to attack reporters with theats of jail and fines. Like Chavez, he seems to be emmulating totalitarian actions. Chavez is on his way to shutting down an opposition tv channel in Caracas...why so he can tell the people what he feels is right and keep them in the dark...just look at north Korea. The fact that Chavez openly insults politician or says bad things about them, makes young and volunerable people beleive in what he says, thus forming followers of his lies. The least those guys can do is act responsably and treat their counterparts with respect, even if they don't agree with them. Along with those that follow him (including Correa) he's forming mentalities which are anti-USA. That can't be good for anyone in the long run....

Doug, you obviously have little or no experience with the Venezuelan media:

Of course, RCTV is nothing like Fox. To say RCTV is like Fox, is to insult the Fox network. Fox may be right-wing media but RCTV doesn't limit itself to being part of the media. It is part of the opposition intent on getting Chavez out of office by any means. And that is what strikes to the heart of the matter. RCTV is not losing its license for a certain editorial line, or supporting the Venezuelan opposition, or even for reporting on the coup and oil strike.

It is losing its license because it was an active participant in the April 2002 coup attempt against Chavez. And no, its not just that it was in favor of the coup, cheering from the sideline, or even giving it favorable coverage.
It actively PARTICIPATED in the coup. Its studios and its broadcasts were used by rebellious military officers to actually direct the coup - giving orders to some, calling on others to surrender.

Say what you will about Bill O'Reilly but he has never allowed his talk show to be used to direct a coup. There is simply no civilized democratic country that would renew the broadcast license of a TV station which engages in this kind of activity.

Needless to say this is illegal and is a valid reason to rescind a broadcast license. In fact, Article 74 of the Organic Law of Telecommunications gives the government the right to rescind broadcast licenses "for reasons of national security". This is just but one of many laws broken by RCTV, many of which are detailed in this excellent document:

What about the little fact that RCTV is just one of many media outlets that has been taken down. RCTV is simply the biggest, maybe the equivalent of CBS.

What about the Venezuelans opposed to Chavez that have "dissapeared". What about those who were openly killed. The military attempted the Coup, because they were ordered by Chavez to kill protesters.

I have Venezuelans friends who refuse to send their kids to the university because students have been bullied, hospitalized and even killed for speaking out against Chavez to the wrong person.

It is all very sad.

The government is now controlling this aset because it was previosly aquired with STATE FUNDS in a scandelous bank fraud perpetrated in a previous government.

Don't all the coincidental similarities of what is taking place in Venezuela with what is happening in Ecuador make you wonder? Ecuador also has this sudden surge of charitable contribution of doctors from Cuba, despite the fact that there are so many doctors in Ecuador that they are driving taxis.

Michelle, you are absolutely right! Rafael Correa is implementing a plan, created by Fidel Castro several years ago, to establish a Marxist government in Ecuador. It's the same plan being carried out in Venezuela, Bolivia and Nicaragua. Chávez and his minions rule with lies, trikery, intimidation and violence. They are criminals and should be stopped.

The socialist experiment in Cuba has produced an educated populace and good Medical Doctors.

They have aided in education and health in Ecuador before... And they will continue in the future as long as there is good diplomatic relations.

Correa's government is Democraicaly elected... He has caracterized his politics as 'Socialist Christian'.. In a little more than 100 days governments policies and actions are speaking volumes of the good it is doing in Ecuador

Ecuador can maintain diplomatic and trade relations with ANY country in the world...

Even COMMUNIST CHINA.. Though I hope NOT... I wouldn't want POLUTING CAPITALIST SLAVESHOPS in Ecuador!
