I am going to try to get off Zyprexa soon. I am on 15mg and have gained over 50 lbs over the past 4 years. Has anyone had any positive weight loss once thay have quit taking the drug? I really have to get this weight off and all attempts at dieting and exercise have not worked for me. I have also put on weight from Celexa recently (10lbs) with no diet change. I am also planning to taper that drug down. This will all take place with the blessings of my dr before any attempt is made.

I am now trying to get off zyprexa. I gained 30 pounds in last 2 yrs. I have been on 2.5 and have been on half that since last Sunday. No problems to speak of yet. I have lost a few inches. I can tell by a pair of jeans that I couldn't get into before. I am also on celexa. I heard once you do get off the zyprexa, your appetite goes away. I sure hope so.

I hope someone else will have more positive news, but for me the weight has not come off.
If you aren't diabetic yet, you likely will have more success than I have. Insulin is the "fat" hormone and the "hunger" hormone, so it is very hard to lose weight while injecting myself with it 5 times a day.
Also, the neuropathy is SO bad that it is very painful to try to walk for exercise. I really am going to rededicate myself to trying it again, though!
I have found that if I limit my carbohydrate intake to just one meal a day (Supper with my family is the one I choose when I am sincerely working the "plan") that I am not nearly as hungry thru the day and my blood sugar is in better control. I read about this 15-20 yrs ago in Carbohydrate Addict's diet. Adkins, etc., didn't work long for me, as it was so hard to stay with and not necessarily the healthiest of all options.
I eat a piece of fruit or have a nice slice of bread or other starch with my normal meal for supper. Of course, sometimes I'm so depressed by all of this that I just fail to plan ahead and have the right (lo carb) foods at the ready.:(.
Good luck. Please post more so I can be inspired by your progress!!

I'm on zyprexa I've gained 51 pounds in 2 years. I have to stay on zyprexa. This will only work for me.
I have a 9 month gut size. If any one has a idea of what to do about my appeitite or anything on zyprexa. Usually were the best people of knowing our med's.

Wendy,
Do not attempt to go off meds by yourself, but having said that, sweetie, why are you so sure only zyprexa will work? I've read many, many studies that show the older, cheaper antipsychotics work as well as this one.
I know it makes us feel panicky sometimes to think of change, especially if we've had really terrible experiences in the past, but please tell us more about why you are convinced only this can help.
I'll be praying for you, dear.
Have you had your blood sugar checked lately? What was it?

Wendy, Canada-
Why do you have to stay on Zyprexa? All of your psychiatric symptoms will clear up if you go into a diabetic coma - GET YOUR GLUCOSE, TRIGLYCERIDES, LDL AND HDL CHOLESTERAL TESTED YESTERDAY!!! Look at all the serious side effects caused by Zyprexa discussed in this forum and reconsider if you really have to stay on Zyprexa. The psychological distress caused by Zyprexa's 50+ pound weight gain appears to be contributing to your depression. Motivation is destoyed by Zyprexa, apathy about everything is a side effect of Zyprexa. Psychistrists blame the patient for these side effects of Zyprexa, leaving the patient on Zyprexa as their condition continues to deteriorate. Find a regular doctor to get you off Zyprexa, and then everything you mention will improve once you stop taking Zyprexa.

Hi Bobbygirl. I'm alright thanks. I fell out of bed yesterday mornin and my chin hit the dresser and snapped my neck back,so I'm in a little pain. I see the Dr. today. I wonder if being a cluts is part of the symtoms of zypreza?

Loss of coordination is a side effect of these medications. While taking Seroquel (similar to Zyprexa) I would stumble around "like a drunk" when getting up during the night, or if I got up too early the next morning (anytime much before noon). Before taking Seroquel, I would frequently play basketball, but the weight gain and loss of coordination from taking Seroquel made it impossible to continue playing basketball. Since quitting Seroquel, I have lost weight and regained the coordination necessary to play basketball again. I pray your blood sugar results come back ok - best wishes.

Fortunately I caught the fact that problems were developing and quit Seroquel before any permanent damage was done. 2 blood tests have come back completely ok from 2 different doctors (I didn't trust my psychiatrist and intercepted the blood test results at the clinic before she saw them and had another test from another doctor), and 4 glucose tests have come back under 100. I am playing basketball etc again and consider myself extremely lucky compared to what Zyprexa victims have been going through.

My friend isn't so lucky with Zyprexa and Lithium. He thinks my ideas about how dangerous Zyprexa is are coming from outer space and that his psychiatrist is god. The last time I stopped at his store, he was bagging groceries and another employee was standing next to him doing most of the work. A few minutes later he was standing about 10 feet from the checkout lanes staring into space. I just can't stand to see this happening to him and know why it is happening and feel powerless to do anything. His family also believes his psychiatrist, who claims he just needs to work harder to get into shape, refusing to admit that Zyprexa and Lithium are causing any of his problems when they are causing all of them.

Hi BobR

I am sorry about your friends plight - It must be awful to see a friend in such a condition.

I presume that the Zyprexa AND lithium are having a combined worsening effect tha just the Zyprexa alone?

I know that lithium can be really hard on kidneys. Those of us who've been make diabetic of course are always concerned about our kidneys. I'll be praying for your friend, and you BobR.
I am so sorry for both of you. I know the feeling of watching someone you love killing himself and being powerless to change anything.
Have you considered something really dramatic, like filing some sort of abusive charges on his behalf. I can't think clearly now, but the kind that's inbetween child abuse and elder abuse?
Obviously, his family will fight you, so who knows what good that would do.

As for the stumbling, I didn't do much of that but did and still do drop things, hands don't go where they're supposed to, etc. I was never like that before zyprexa.

Daily Horoscope for December 26

Aquarius

If you're still happily munching chocolates and all sorts of other goodies, you'll have to take yourself in hand at some point during the coming fortnight. Maybe you'll have to compensate for all the festive over-eating by taking more exercise or cutting back on the calories, or perhaps you'll decide that you can't delay giving up smoking any longer. As Mercury turns in your twelfth house of secrets, messages you receive at this time may be very subtle or contain hidden meanings meant only for your understanding.
