Senior study author Dominique Hermier said,“Based on these findings we concluded that male rats treated with olanzapine experienced an early disruption of energy metabolism. This was a result of the fat tissue we observed and the impairment in blood sugar regulation which are both associated with metabolic syndrome and subsequent risk of diabetes.”
Anti-Psychotic Drugs (Zyprexa) Change Metabolism

http://psychcentral.com/news/2008/04/08/anti-...

In the study 18 male rats were randomly assigned to one of three groups:(1) those receiving the conventional antipsychotic drug haloperidol (HA); (2) those receiving the atypical antipsychotic drug olanzapine (OL); or (3) the control (CO) group which did not receive either drug.

The medicines were given in food for a period of six weeks. Female rats were excluded to eliminate bias in the study since antipsychotic-induced weight gain in female rodents is likely related to an interaction of the drugs with estrogens.

Testing after four weeks found that the concentration of blood sugar (as glucose) was higher in OL rats (0.87 g/l) than in CO rats (0.75 g/l) and the levels increased more rapidly after a glucose meal. Testing six weeks later found fasting blood sugar levels continued to rise in OL rats (1.46 g/l vs. 1.25 g/l in CO rats) while the level of lipids (fats) in the blood was similar for both groups.
Although there was no difference in body weight gain or food intake, the proportion of fat stored in the abdominal cavity was higher in OL rats (1.63%) vs. CO rats (1.44%).

The HA rats did not vary in any way with the control group at any time. They exhibited a lower blood sugar level after a glucose meal and a lower proportion of intraabdominal fat store (1.44%) than OL rats.

How does Zyprexa cause diabetes?

It has been "theorized" that Zyprexa causes diabetes by poisoning the pancreatic beta cells causing them to die off?(if this is true then it's really scary stuff)

On July 1, 2002, Duke University issued a Press Release about the most recent finding that links the new anti-psychotics to early onset diabetes. The team of researchers--Elizabeth A. Koller, M.D. from the FDA, and Murali Doraiswamy, M.D. from Duke-- analyzed FDA's adverse drug report database, MedWatch (which receives 10% of adverse drug reports). They identified 289 cases of diabetes in patients who had been prescribed olanzapine (a.k.a. Zyprexa), Eli Lilly's most profitable drug.

This I do know ...that at my local clinic the Doctors have stopped prescribing Zyprexa except as a temporary PRN for acute cases only.
WHY? for two reasons:
1) The reason they give it out at all is because it is a fine med where indicated for specific symptoms and does the job very well
2)They stopped it as daily maintenance because they believe in their own hearts that it is the worst offender over the other atypicals AND because their patients refuse to take it on account of all the bad Zyprexa PR

Our thirty-four year old son, who was bi-polar, was prescribed Zyprexa about six years ago. The medication combined with Depakote, worked well for him. However, he developed diabetes as well as pancreatitis. He was hospitalized numerous times with bouts of pancreatitis. He was also treated and sent home from the ER for milder cases.

On February 24 of this year while visiting in VA ,he developed symptoms of pancreatitis. He was taken to the hopspital and put on a ventilator. When we arrived at the hospital at 2:oo am on Monday, his blood sugar level was 2500. He last opened his eyes at 1:30 that morning.

He stayed on life support for six days. His liver, kidneys, lungs, and pancreas shut down. He was on dialysis for several days. He was taken off life support and passed away on March 1.

Zyprexa gave him an almost normal life for a while, however it (in my opinion), killed him.
His doctor agreed with me.

Please don't use this drug. It can kill you.

don't wait for the FDA or any university to study the Medwatch database. they don't have enough resources. You can now do it yourself. Go to www.adverse-drug-reaction.net . Then if you need help, they also have drug injury attorneys link. they can help!

I have been taking another drug to control appetite and metabolism called hCG and os far its working pretty good. Checking out Zyprexa is sounds like it has some bad side effects.
ZYPREXA Side Effects
The most prominent side effects of ZYPREXA include dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, fatigue, constipation, upset stomach, increased appetite, or mild trembling, weight gain etc. Consulting a physician is the best way out in such cases as there are tested alternatives to correct such side effects.
Zyprexa can also give birth to serious side effects like severe abdominal pain, abnormal gait, irritation, anxiety, back pain, behavior problems, blood in urine, blurred vision, chest pain, cough, dehydration, fluctuating blood pressure, eye problems, feeling of well-being, fever, headache, hostility, indigestion, inflammation of the nasal passages and throat, insomnia, joint pain, movement disorders, muscle rigidity, nausea, nervousness, pain in arms and legs, rapid heartbeat, restlessness, abnormal dreams. Cases with decreased sex drive, dental pain, breathing trouble, emotional instability, involuntary movement, joint stiffness, menstrual irregularities, sleepiness, suicide attempts, sweating, swelling of arms and legs, thirst, twitching, urinary problems, vaginal infection, vomiting after usage of Zyprexa are also abundant.
Cases with side effects like black bowel movements, stomach upset, abnormal ejaculation, bleeding, blood clots, breast pain, bone pain, breast growth in males, burping, chills, congestive heart failure, difficulty swallowing, dry eyes, dry skin, ear pain, change in taste sensation, enlarged abdomen, fever, hair loss, hangover feeling, heart attack, inability to control bowel movements, migraine, mouth sores, neck pain, neck rigidity, osteoporosis, pallor, rash, rectal bleeding, rheumatoid arthritis, ringing in the ears, sensitivity to light, stroke, sudden death, swelling of face, swollen gums, yeast infection are rare but cannot be ruled out. It is advisable to see a doctor if any such symptom appears.
