Smoking is a chronic disease. Too often patients try to quit and relapse back to smoking and think they are failures for doing so and give up trying. What must be emphasized is that one must keep trying and encouragement through the relapses is essential from loved ones and physicians.

Also people cannot just slap on a path and expect to miraculously stop smoking. There must be nicotine substitution combined with powerful pychosocial councelling. Motivation plays the largest role in getting people to quit. Living a longer healthier life for the loved ones in your life should be the biggest reason of all. People trying to quit to maintain this focus on the years of extra life the lose with each cigarette.
