I was given Topamax to help ween me off of xanax, which I was taking for anxiety disorder. But I am still on the xanax and was while I was taking it. My doctor never took me off of it, I have been on Topomax since Sept. of 2005. I am also takeing Xanax 100mg, Zoloft 175, Synthroid .175mcg, for thyroid cancer. I was recently taking off of the Topomax on Oct 19, 2006 due to acute Pancreatitus. My doctor said that the Pancreatitus could of been caused by the Topamax. I started at the usual doseage 50 mg. and stopped at 200 mg. Along with the Acute Pancreatitus I lost HUGE amount of weight. 85 lbs in little over 3 months and was still losing. I did everything to keep weight on. But now that I am off of it I am gaining the weight back and I don't like that. I weighted 219 lbs in Sept of 2005, lowest weight was 135 lbs befor I stopped taking Topamax. I was getting concerned about my weight due to my cancer, I asked the doctor several times if it was the Topamax causeing the weight loss. So i was very upset that it took me getting Acute Pancreatitus for him to even check any rare side affects. My main question is, How do I keep the weight off without becoming aneorixic?

Now my doctor wants me to take Lamictal. He said with a smile, "the rarest side effect on this drug is a skin rash that causes death." I said, "ARE YOU SERIOUS???" I really don't know weather or not to take this med. I can't get a new Phsyciatrist because there are none in the area that are taking new pacients. I wonder if it will cause weight loss too?? |

I too, lost 40 lbs on topamax, and have decided to take myself off the drug because of the over whelming side effects that it has caused me. My left side of my body is constantly numb, and various other problems. I use it for bipolar disorder. My doctor is not happy, however I feel that my body is telling me something. However..I do know that the topomax made me lose the weight, and I am willing to fight this battle. Some how there is a happy medium where our weight is suppose to be, and a pill should not take my weight off. If it can take my weight off...what else is it doing? I have seen what else it can do! I suggest that we look at helping ourselves, with trying to eat the right foods. I know in the past, I was terrible, and actually I still am. So as I wean myself off of this I will think of you...and maybe together we can win this battle together! Take care |

Yes lamictal cause weight loss!! i've been on it for 6 mon.. and i've lost about 10 to 14 lbs. And as far as the rash thing i never got any of it. Some times you have to just take a chance.. Trust me the chance;s of a rash forming is slim to none... And if it dose just call your doctor right a way and they will take you off of it..

did anyone besides me gain weight on topamax? i put on 30 pounds in just 2 months. also, i developed terrible fluid retention for which i must now take diuretics.

Has anyone on Topomax noticed mood swings or being overly stressed out? My wife takes topomax for seziures and ever sence she has been on this stuff she has been overly stressed out and quite irritable. She has also lost a bunch of weight. Her weight has now pretty much hit bottom and stabalized but she will not stop taking the drug because of that.

I was prescribed Topamax a month and a half ago for GAD (Generalized Anxiety Disorder) and I was started out ate 25mg for a week the 50 mg for a week then 75 mg for 2 weeks when I went in for my 1 month med eval. I had gained weight while on Topamax and my Dr. WAS NOT happy at all. Mind you I am a 26 yr old F and i'm 5'6" and weigh 200lbs. I gained 30lbs in 3 months for no apperent reason according to my MDs. No I am on 100mg Topamax 1x a day and BuSpar that I take 10mg 3x a day for a total of 30mgs a day and am still varying between 200-210 as an average. I normally weigh 150. I am very upset by all this and really want to know whats going on because all I am hearing is how everyone else is losing weight on Topamax. And along with Terry, both only being my hand and feet have been becoming numb since I started taking Topamax but my Dr said that was a normal side effect and the nub sensation comes and goes through out the day.

I am seeing a dr and am put on topamax for migraines. I am suppose to move up my dosage each week. I haven't been able to talk to him yet however I can't move up. I'm still on 25 mg. I tried two pills last week one day and it was awful. It felt like there was a cement block on my chest and my sweatshirt weighed a ton, not to mention I was agitated like I have never been before. I have anxiety and the feeling on my chest had nothing to do with that, something wasn't right and that was not a part of the side effects listed. I had the tingleing sensation, however, it wasn't in my hands and feet it was in my face. Anyone else have this?

yes, i work out everyday and no matter how much i sweat and how many calories i burn i cant seem to loose anything, I also gained at least 30 pounds on topomax. What can be done to rid myself of this water retention. If you have any suggestions please let me know. thanks |

Hi have you gotten any answer to your weight gain, I am 5'6 and now weigh 170 pounds the first time in my entire life. I take topomax for depression as well as paxil and work out every day really hard, I hate to think how much more weight i would be gaining if i didnt work out. My doctor wants me to go on higher doses of it but that was before i realized i was putting on weight and retaining alot of water. Plus I cant even if i wanted to take any more than 75 mg because i get all kinds of weird reactions from it so its a good thing I can't. If you know any thing else please let me know and like wise as well. |

I need input really bad please im at a breaking point here. I have been on topamax for miagraines as well as mood swings/maybe bipolar LOL I dont think they really are sure. Anyways I am now on 100mg at nights and 50mg in the morning. Now keep in mind I have never been in the sahpe I am in now crying out for help or moody like I am. Okay, now for the input and whats happening now present day .... I just about can't get along with anyone my mood is so bad I cannot stand myself I am sooo depressed and hateful 24/7, it does me no good to get in a car for road rage I mean i am so full of angry. Has anyone experienced this with this medication. Please im trying to figure this out before having to check in ...

Tracy, you should talk to your doctor. I've never had this problem on Topomax and maybe the combination of an anti-depressant and a mood stabilizer isn't working for you. Topomax has helped me lose weight in the past so I'm going back on it. The most I experienced was being jittery and a bit forgetful. Please talk to your doctor. You should not feel desperate for any reason and if it's your meds that's causing this anxiety, the answer is simple: this is not the right cocktail for you!

teresa- the weight gain is from the paxil - switch to something like wellbutrin + cymbalta. And Tracy, I've experienced the same thing and am quitting cold turkey. Am hoping megadoses of fish oil might help. things are better.

UPDATE **** I went to see my doctor and after telling him for the 15th time (not really 15 but alot) about how i thought my problems was coming from topamax he decided to take me off of it cold turkey as well as paxil keep in mind i was on paxil 20mg for oh 7 yrs now for depression and topamax for months 150mg for what he thought was mood swings and or bipolar well yesterday i didnt take my meds and today was my best day in over months i think it was just mentally knowing that im off that crap hehe of couse it couldnt be ou of my system even a little bit for me to tell today but i do feel alot better the doctor tried arguing the fact that it couldnt at all be the topamax then when i mentined this site and how other people felt etc... he then said " i'll take you off of your medicine, i dont know what you want me to do you have tried everything" lets all keep each other in prayer Thanks for your support !! I experienced the same things. The bad attitude, the bitteness ....I lost my fiance and my family became distant. I argued with the doctor to take me off and he finally did and I feel better than I ever have. He put me on effexor. However you have to remember that ever medicine has a different effect on everyone in many different ways. Please consult the doctor about this because me being in he shoes it's not fun and I didnt really feel as if anything was wrong until finally my family demanded that I really sit down and figure out things from another point of view. |

I'm experiencing great weight loss from Topamax! I was at 100 mg at night, but I started to feel like not eating at all. I took it down a bit because I struggled for years with anorexia. It did make carbonation taste different to me however, and I haven't had a soda in over a month! I am really happy about that. It has helped with my mood and sleeping a lot as well. Drawback: As I increased my dosage, it started messing with my Yasmin (birth control) and caused a lot of break through bleeding. It's been like this for a week already, a week before I am to start my real period. I'm not liking that at all, so I have calls into both Docs to figure out what's up! That's my 2 cents, trying to see if anyone else has had those problems.:\

I am also taking 1200MG of tegretal to, im not sure if that was for bipolar i cant remember but i hope that by now you have talked you your Doc and he has helped you!=)(sorry about my post i accidently hit enter!)
