Q and A: Do antidepressants work?

Full story: Chemistry World

“There is good evidence of antidepressant efficacy from other types of studies, especially relapse prevention, which show significant benefit over placebo”

A widely-reported analysis of clinical trial data for Prozac and related antidepressant drugs has claimed that the medicines work little better than chemically-inactive placebos in all but the most severely ... via Chemistry World

Well, AD's do in fact do "something"... The unknown is what is scary IMO. However, people do react, and the reaction can be viewed from different perspectives. Many people report the "I don't give a ...." feeling after a decent amount treatment. Some people react very quickly, sometimes one of the first things to happen is a boost in energy, unfortunatly, this boost can cause "mania." That is why the suicide rate spikes after a week and a half or so, when you come down from your manic episode. Some people feel nothing, some anxiety, sleeplessness...etc.
The bottom line here is it does have an affect, the question that still baffles the medical profession, is why... and how? More is unknown than known.
One report doesn't justify an innefective drug, years of "seeing is believing" has shown that these medicines do work.(Or at least have some effect.)
Placebo's allways have an effect, but now we are talking "mind over matter." However, when looking for help, maybe "mind over matter" is exactly what many people need.

they work, but sadly they always seem to come with bad side effects attached

I used paxil for about 5 1/2 months years ago. The first 4 1/2 months were great! But the side-effects started at 4 1/2 months and I became very very ill, nauseated, headaches, but the worst was the vertigo. I have never experienced such vertigo in that way in my life, before or since. That was a terrifing experience, so much that it took me a month to stop taking paxil and I refused to ever try another anti-depressant again. Now I use alcohol...lol just kidding.

Remember when you were a kid and you use to go to the fair and get on all the rides? There is one ride that just spins everyone around and it lifts in the air 180 degrees? I don't remember the name of that ride, but the vertigo you get on that ride along with the roller coaster finally comming down after crawling up the track for what felt like forever? Those two combination's together is what is was like for me when I got into cars, on a bike, getting on an elevator, walking up or down a hill, and riding the city bus, except I couldn't get off the ride!

Some antidepressants are very dissimilar. Some like Wellbutrin have a relatively stimulating effect. Others like norepinephrine acting Rx's work like Strattera. Most stimulate Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. These age and wane with time and lack of purpose ,attitude, pessimissm, socioeconomic status, ETC. Prozac was a disappointment. Newer generation forms are on the way after FDA clearance. Celexa with Abilify has found to be active < 1 week after initiation. Some studies suggest d-amphetamine salts combinations (Adderall) titrated carefully for recalcitrant unamaliarated protracted severe depressive dissociative affect not amenable to any other Tx modalities.Disclaimer-common sense opinions of the authors only. Do not attempt without a neurologist or similar experts advice.

Medicines such as anti-depressants have a different effect per individual, others may work for you while others may not. It is also important to be aware of anti-depressant side effects since it can greatly affect people’s health and even the health of their coming babies such as Zoloft birth defects. Always consult your doctor about your medicine intake and your health in general.

This is such a great way of describing it I had to say so even tho you were here years ago! I had times where I had to hang onto the wall to keep from falling down once time in emerg and they did not know what to do with me.

The effectiveness of antidepressants vary with each person, some may have a faster reaction than others. And with regard to placebo effect, it generally comes from the thought that it will work, if you don't think that this drug will work then it will directly affect the effectiveness of the drug to the body. Our mind is a powerful tool that can manipulate the reaction of our body. Antidepressants like Paxil have their own effect in the body and you can look into it at http://www.paxilbirthdefectlaw.com/paxil-info...

Mind altering, just not depression altering. They mask problems, and are extremely dependency forming-- safer on the sugar pill.
It struggles to beat placebo. Must have a nightmare if tested against exercise.

I can recommend a disreputable pharmacy that will dispense this stuff when according to the guidelines of the area in which I live the initial prescription should have been stopped in the pharmacy on the grounds that I was not meeting the criteria for its useage

Daily Horoscope for May 22

Virgo

Keep a pinch of salt handy today because not everything you hear will be the gospel truth. Someone might have manipulated the facts to make them sound more acceptable, or they may have got carried away and forgotten to tell you something rather vital. Try to keep misunderstandings to a minimum by being as straightforward and honest as possible, and by not simply assuming that people know what you're talking about and therefore not bothering to explain properly.
