I see the end comming for the US proprietary pharmaceutical business. The cost of developing and testing combined with patent challenges will eventually decrease the financial incentive for spending on the research and development of new drugs. Look for major consolidation and cost cutting and the shifting of research overseas. Also look for a marked decrease in new approved medications. Sorry, we can't have it both ways.

As you know, Cephalon bought Provigil from a French company, so they had no development costs whatsoever. Nevertheless, they now have a lock on the market. 30 tablets of 100mg each cost me about $180 at my local pharmacy in the US. The equivalent in Mexico, made under Cephalon license, is $38. Now the license is expiring and it is no longer going to be made in Mexico. Canadian prices are a little cheaper, but the point is that neither the cost of the drug, nor the development costs have any bearing on the price. They know it's a life saver for some people so they raise the price to the limit of their ability to provide the quantity.

What do you take provigil for? I was on it back in the early 2000's but lost my insurance and could not afford the $400/mo. cost. I was on it for narcolepsy.

I have been on Adderall and fluxotine for depression for the past 4 years and this combo is no longer effective and I have developed high bp. I have been researching Provigil and think it might just do the trick. Right now my depression is keeping me from doing my job, wanting to get out of bed, experiencing joy in anything I do, having mild suicidal thoughts and no sex drive and hope for the future. I do not have insurance so need to buy a generic from a European online source. Does anyone have suggestions for tources?

Cephalon's greed is an outstanding example of what is wrong with the world we live in. I have CFS and it got so bad I was afraid I would have to stop working at my part time job and go on disability. My doctor sent me to a sleep center where Provigil was described, and it has been a life (and job) saver. However, even with insurance I just paid $177 for a 45 day supply (2-200 mg pd). Especially since I am only able to work part time, this is a huge financial burden. I am grateful for the Provigil which enables me to enjoy life rather than sleep through it, but am absolutely disgusted with Cephalon's greed, shown by their excessive pricing and generic-blocking activities in the US. I would like to try a generic version of the medication, but am concerned about what else might be in it. Can anybody recommend a safe internet pharmacy?

I have been on Provigil for several years and it has been a life-saver and job-saver for me. This year, I'm on a high deductible health insurance plan, and for a three month's supply of Provigil at 200mg x 2 time per day, it's going to cost me $1800.00.....for 3 months!!!! This is outrageous! I have also been looking into the generics produced from India or sold via Canada, but I'm skeptical because I've never purchased medications from a non-USA pharmacy. Has anyone else purchased generic Provigil from India or Canada? I have read many online posts that are for or against generic Provigil (Modafinil), but a lot of those that say it doesn't work for them appear to be abusers of the medicine (for example, saying they had to take 12 pills to stay awake all night to party...). But for those of us who have been through the sleep studies to see why we're so tired during the day, and have been prescribed Provigil for that exact problem, it's frustrating and scary to see that there is still not a generic drug available in the USA, and that Cephalon has jacked up their prices beyond reach. What are we "legitimate" users of Provigil supposed to do? |
