Not only do I have terrible bloating and have gained weight (approx. 10 lbs) in the two years of taking Prilosec, I have come to believe that taking this medicine has made the problem worse. I just read somewhere that taking this medicine creates a sitiuation where the body produces more acid as you are trying to nutralize it because the stomach needs it to digest food. What do you think and has anyone read this also?I have stopped taking prilosec now for three days. I am suffering but I am going to stick it out for another week and see if my body adjusts and gets back to normal.

Yes. I have been off prilosec since March and while i have lost the weight ( gained 10 pounds and have now lost 7), I have increased heartburn worse than I did prior to taking the meds. Foods I used to be able to tolerate (even bread) cause me to have severe burning and acid reflux and even nausea. I am investigating natural sources for relief as I do not want to go back to prilosec or nexium as it has made matters worse.

I've gained about 50 pounds in the past 5 years. I am now taking Essential Enzymes. I no longer have GERD and I've lost 30 pounds in 3 months.

I found Essential Enzymes at my health food store. I bought the Source Naturals brand because it is the one I recognized. They are predigestives. You take one capsule before each mean and I think they are working. I feel better than I have since I stopped the prilosec a month ago. They were $19.99 for 120 capsules. Give them a try.

I have gained 25 pounds since I started Prilosec one year ago. I am going to try enzymes. I am desparate. The doctors all say that they haven't heard that Prilosec caused weight gain. If I had only known....

I have not only gained about 100 lbs in the 5 yrs I have taken prilosec... I have also noticed increased fluid retention in my feet and also a VERY bloated stomach. I didn't know about Enzymes, but, thanks for the info. I will try them and let you all know how it works out for me. My wife has noticed a 100 lb weight gain also. She is wanting to lose the weight and see if it also helps her with HBP and also her thyroid. Wish us luck!

Thank goodness I kept searching and found this string of comments on Prilosec and weight gain. For me, 15 lbs. in 4 months on it and it's absolutely the only NEW thing in my diet. I'm off to the health food store tomorrow for Essential Enzymes!

I have been on priolsec since April and have gained about 30 pounds Drives me crazy!!! When I asked the pharmacist about it I got the same story about how I was probably eating more because my stomach felt better! I can't keep going at this rate.. I am going to try the enzymes. Thanks for the info, and it is nice to know I am not the only out there that is experiencing this.

That does it. I have been taking prilosec for 3weeks and have gained 8 lbs. I am normally quite thin, and have not had a weight change in 2o years,no matter what I eat (although I don't normally eat a lot).I'm off this stuff and going to the whole foods supplement store.

me too. i also have extreme lactic acid build up. I work out with weights daily. and have had trouble after 5-6 reps feeling like i've done 20 reps. i think it's lactic acid. this might fall into the comment above of the body producing more acid to compensate for loss of acid in the stomach. I was going to try baking soda. someone told be that worked to relieve lactic acid.

I gained 5-7lbs in the first week on prilosec. I have been working out more & eating the same. I count calories so I would know if that was it. I am going to stop taking the pills and just start changing my diet so that I am eating less acidic foods that cause the reflux.

I also seem to be carrying extra weight since taking Prilosec. A friend of mine told me to fight fire with fire and take two tsps of vinegar a day. If your stomach has enough acid it won' have to produce more. I am going to try it. I googled it and it is an old natural remedy.

Aciphex and Nexium... I was introduced to aciphex when I was pregnant. I gained eight pounds my whole pregnancy up until I started taking aciphex. 28lbs in two months, nothing changed about my diet or physical activity. I continued to take it and when I stopped the pounds fell off but, the heart burn was worse. They switched me to nexium. I gained almost 40lbs in four months. I worked out more, ate less and nothing happened. Taking these medications can make your body extremely dependant upon them and even cause more problems in the long run. I have never had problems until I started taking this stuff and have since had my gall bladder removed...

Suzane Somers said you have to take acid to fight acid it's in the Breakthrough book. I am taking apple cider vinegar in a cup of warm water, sweetened if you want.
