Doctors have no clue how to deal with its devastating side effects. It has ruined my life, too, and that's after only a 2-week tapered regimen. I want to know if ANDREW is okay now, and how long it took to get back to normal. I have not taken prednisone for four weeks, but I still have bouts of fatigue, occasional leg pain, occasional panic. I can't understand why anyone with anything less than a debilitating illness would run the risk of taking this abominable drug. Andrew, how are you doing now?

Jim wrote: <quoted text> Is this a joke? If you think you may die...then why are you working out and drinking? Do you not read the side affects with meds when you take them or the do's and don'ts. Either way my doctor told me to be careful about "workouts" or any form of exercise while taking prednisone because you have such a boost of energy with it that you can have a heart attack for overdoing the exercise. You normally have high blood pressure? No one normally has high blood pressure....you need meds for it. You really need to take care of yourself..no one else can do it for you. This is a perfect example of a patient whose doctor has not explained how prednisone works. If it's just for an insect sting, why is he taking 60 mg? And why doesn't he know that prednisone gives you a high? And if it gives you a "high," you don't need that much.

I have a rare blood disorder called ITP, low platelette count. I have had this disorder on and off since I was 20 and I am 47 and am going through it again.
They start you out with 80 mg. for a month at least and gradually take you down. I have been in and out of the hospital with my counts going down so not only was I taking oral prednisone but intervenous steroids and gamma globulin (blood product) and platelette transfusion.
If your count goes below 10,000, it should be 150,000 to 300,000, you can bleed in the brain or other organs, my count was at 1,300.
This medicine is horrible, there are only a few things that can be done for this disorder and this is usually the best.
It makes your face (the moon face) look horrible, you shake, can't sleep, think straight, sit still, get fat in places you don't want stomach and face mostly. Thinning of skin, it just keeps on.
The depression and constant movement is very difficult. But what can you do if it is all that may save your life?
Oh, and of course, remember it lowers your immune system.
My platelets seem to be going up, it seems to be working, if they lower the amount sometimes it comes back, then there are other drugs they will try which is chemo, which I think will be worse.
I guess the best thing to remember is if there is nothing else out there, as you wean of the drug you will be back to yourself. It takes awhile, but hang in there, I am doing the best I can, I try to focus on other things to calm down with myself and of course, you can always ask your doctor to give you an anxiety medicine to temper some of the side effects.
Take care everyone, and maybe someday there will be something out there that will be as effective as this med, but without all the horrible side effects.

Prednisone can help resolve pain, and agony for a short term, and/or make you miserable.
If you are on high doses (anything over 40mg per day) you MUST take 1500 mg calcium and 600 Vitamin D3. If you don't, you will have some form of bone replacement in your future or crippling arthritis.
I would have gone mad without it. I finally started taking it for mouth ulcers due to Crohns/Bechets. The pain was too great, and nothing else worked. It stopped the pain. They went away.
Now, I take low doses (10 to 5 mg) occassionally for a few months at a time for muscle pain due to above disease.
It won't cure any disease. Imurin is the drug I'm taking so my body stops attacking itself. Prednisone is just to help control a bad bought of whatever disease you have. I've seen it used for asthma, crohns, ulcerative colitis, one friend with a brain tumor (she had migrains and they prescribed drugs first).
Most doctors I've seen prescribe too high a dose out of fear of not being able to control the situation. They did this to my mother, and she has cripple fingers (very bad for an artist). My father was prescribed too high a dose for something they couldn't figure out. It turned out he didn't need prednisone at all. He needed bi pass surgery. He now has two new knees. They both switched doctors immediately.
Prednisone should be a last choice, used only to help a painful situation. It should never be used long term. It cures nothing, and the side effects are horrible.
