Is anyone involved with Simmons Cooper Law firm and the class action law suit? I am looking for anyone else who got a settlement or offer yet from Purdue.

First off, I do believe that Purdue was, and is in the wrong in not providing strict enough warning labels, and requiring pre,and post counseling when going on and off this drug.
The prescription of accutane, has resulted in a smooth working model that requires steps and active psychiatric monitoring of the patient durring the entire treatment process, as well as prior to ever going through a cycle of accutane. This has not proved to be an inconvience for patients, but a safe guard, and a life-line.
With that said:
It's likely that the suit will settle for a multi-billion dollar sum, with Purdue then appealing the decision. It is equally as likely that the suit will be dismissed. The literal fact is, that the odds of winning in Vegas are very similar to those of winning a private suit.
The courts have no enforcement powers. Thus, if Purdue was ordered by a jury to pay injuries in the billions of dollars, it's likely that they would apply for protection under the bankruptcy laws that apply to their particular financial situation.
When then emerge from this protection, their first legal obligation is to pay off those creditors, and those that have loaned them money, or given them bridge-loans to get through their bankruptcy.
Still, Purdue is a multi-billion dollar company with a blockbuster multi-billion dollar drug on their hands. It's unlikely that they'll file for any type of protection.

PART II

This is going to be a a precedent setting decision for the courts. I would not be at all surprised to see this wind up in the Supreme Court.
There is the argument as to whom is responsible for those that have become addicts suit claims. Are the prescribing doctors responsible for not properly informing their patients?
Are the pharmacys responsible? Are the patients responsible for acting, even though they gave informed consent to treatment?
Is the FDA responsible, yet again, for allowing another drug to slip by without proper monitoring and restrictions of use, warning labels, etc? If such was the case, there may be a federal component to this case.
Are insurance companies responsible, for covering such medications instead of covering the actual treatments required to "CURE" the underlying condition?
Such are the arguments that will be presented, as will such arguments that there are millions of patients have used this drug and have not become "addicts."
With only 1000 complaints filed, it's likely that any award sent down by the courts will be of a substantial nature.
Attorney's are not the bad guys here folks. If it were not for lawyers, there would be no airbags, no anti-lock brakes, no smoke detector laws, no speed limits, there would still be asbestos and lead in our homes, etc.
Remember the attorney's are going to have to spend several million dollars, probably around 20+ million dollars, to run the case. This is due to the fact that Purdue is going to throw all it's resources at this case. One multi-million or multi-billion settlement and they are going to be sued by states, on behalf of those their citizens, similar to what has taken place with big-tabacco companies. On top of that they'll take usually 40% if the case goes to trial.
That is more than fair, considering that if they lose the case, they also lose their 20+ million.
Not many law firms in the nation can lose 20+ million without serious financial constraints.
So, let's all just wait and see.
I would not be surprised at all, if this is the case that prompts purdue to finally give in to additives that would allow for oxycontin to retain it's analgesic properties, while disallowing those to become addicted. Such drugs, and additives have been around for over a decade and have been published in peer reviewed journals for many years with drugs such as vicodin and percocet.
Again I think Purdue is the culprit, but I don't think the legal firm, should be condemned as this is not a frivolous law suit, and they have been hard at work trying to get this case filed for some time, on behalf of those, like us, who have become addicted or dependent upon this horrible drug.

There have been quite a few that have been offered a settlement, as funny as that itty bitty amount is. The problem is that if anyone accepts it then they are silenced for life.Even commenting that they were offered a settlement can make them lose what they were offered. They are paying a small price for people's silence and that is all.It will be swept away and they can still sit back and say they have never lost a case and that all the victims are lying street addicts just as they have always done. For the small amount they are offering people would either have to be crazy or lying about their addiction to accept it.I laughed all the way to the garbage can with my papers. They will not buy my silence of all the damage they have caused with such an insulting offer.

I'm not prescribed oxy but it has ruined my life, my boyfriend and I have spent every last penny on our addiction and we now have both moved back in with our parents. The withdrawals are horrible and unbearable. We can't afford rehab let alone anything else. Can we be apart of the lawsuit without a prescription? We just want help.

My boyfriend did some research and I don't know what the facts are but he said Purdue gives a number of how many pills are made each year. And the amount of pills recovered by law enforcement last year almost tripled the number Purdue said they made that year. So that means either someone else is making them or Purdue is producing way more than they say they are and then selling them to the streets. They are making millions off our misery and I'm not going to stand around and let it happen. This stuff is ruining thousands of lives, it causes way more harm than it does good.

I feel sorry for your situation and believe me you are not alone. many people in my state and many other states are also in this situation and its sad to hear about how it affects peoples lives. The lawsuit being spoken about is for people who have been prescribed oxycontin without the knowledge of how addictive it would be and consequently it ruined there lives. GOOD LUCK!

i recieved my settlement and was very disappointed.
i lost a husband of 22 years, and although i'm not at liberty to say what my settlement was for i'm ashamed that purdue has so little regard for human life, the document were worded so as to make me feel i had no choice but to settle and i feel cheated, i'm ashamed of myself for my husbands sake i know his life was worth more the the the pathetic amount they offered. i hope this will someday pan out and justice will prevail.
