I have been taking MS Contin 100mg (morphine sulphate) 3 times a day as well as Oxycodone 15mg 3 times a day for the last 2 years. I want to get off these damn things and just be normal again. I know I will be in a lot of pain but I am sick of loosing girlfriends, friends, and family member support because of my addiction. I do have 3 herneiated disks in my lower back and so I do have a legit prescription and reason to take these. I just hate being dependent on drugs. How long will I withdrawl and what will I go through? Should I consider to
"ween" myself off? Or to go cold turkey? Please help me out?

It is dif. for everyone man, but I strongly suggest you try and get detoxed by a doctor. I have been off and on oxy, perc, vic, and even heroin when I couldn't find anything else...One thing I can tell you is if people start talking to you about suboxone say NO! Even if it's in treatment...If you would like to know a really safe place that detoxed me and did it with very little pain let me know...My email is golfswift1@hotmail.com. Don't know how long you've been on this, but that will also effect how long and how bad the detox will be...Ok just reread your message...That long and that much you can bet you'll be hurting for about 2 weeks, at least 10 days...What you can do is slowly ween yourself off if you really think you have the strength, but what you are going to do is drag it out...Truth is everyone is diff so good luck, and again if you want the name of this place email me and I will shoot it to you...THey got me off 4 40mg oxycontins a day along with a fifth of vodka or close to it everynight...I can say I felt 99% comfortable the entire time. They will also refer you to an out-patient place where a doctor can help you after you get out if you are having problems...Good luck buddy...Sorry to hear you are in this situation.

I would ween yourself off. Cold Turkey is dangerous to your body. Once your so used to a certain drug, it's not good for your body to deprive it of that all of a sudden. I would try either the methadone/subutex route or try weening down by using less each day for a week. Maybe try ms's 2 times a day/oxy 2 times. Then after a couple days take no mscontin's and only 1-2 oxy, then down to just 1 oxy. But if you have a medical condition, your always going to feel pain, but this will help you with withdrawals, just not the pain.

Why do you say that? I have been on Subs for 7 months and have tried to quit several times to no avail...Same withdrawl as oxy but a lot longer...Have you had sucess with this, and if so how did you get off?

there is NOTHING dangerous about stopping an opiate addiction cold turkey. Sure it may be very uncomfortable but its not like a benzo or alcohol addiction when stopping cold turkey can actually kill you.

Opiate withdrawal is tough but not dangerous at all to your body.

Why do you want to get off them? Why do you think you're addicted?

I have 4 bulging discs, 2 levels of stenosis, spondylosis, thecal sac impingement, facet hypertrophy and modic changes. I am in severe pain 24/7. I wear a 100 mcg fentanyl patch and take up to 120 mg of oxycodone a day.

I have seen too many cp'ers stop their meds because of stupid, un-informed comments by doctors, relatives and friends who don't know better.

All CP'ers taking narcotics will get withdrawal symptoms if they stop their meds abruptly.

WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS DOES NOT MEAN ADDICTION!

Addiction is a psychological event. Addicts take meds for the high, not for pain relief. They Doctor shop and buy more meds on the street.

If the quality of your life improves with the meds, there is no reason to stop.

If the meds are ruining your life and you lose money, your house, spouse, etc., then there could be a problem.

But don't get off the meds to please relatives or friends. If you need the meds for pain relief, there is no reason to stop them.

Nick- My dad is on 100mg (patch) and 80 mg of oxy because of his back...His is all perscribed, but like you just got sick of it...He goes to a pain management doctor who perscribes him this stuff...His doctor is weening him off...Every month he goes down in mg on both the patch, and the oxy and he has done it with ease so far..He also had some kind of devise put into his back for shock treatment...That seems to be working for his pain...Don't know what your situation is but I would talk to your doc about what you are looking at doing...Let him help you...The gentleman that wrote from CA is right...If you have leg. pain (And I mean legit..Not just a script, but you really have pain you can't handle then you need to figure something out...You shouldn't have to be in pain 24/7 for the rest of your life...Good luck!

I will talk with my doctor and see what he thinks. I'm 100% sure I will not go on Methadone. I've heard that stuff is just as bad. I kinda like the idea of weening off but then again isn't that just like suboxone? Plus suboxone is VERY expensive here in Wisconsin. The doctors require about $1200-$1500 down payment to be in the programs and plus there is a waiting period! I heard from a friend that some hospitals have a mental health/detox unit and I could go there as a last resort.

Amen!!!! I don't understand why people would let ither peoples opions affect they're quality of life! I'm 28 years old hand have already been diagnosed with cervical spins stenosis. I am on 40mg of oxycontin twice a day and vicodin 10/650 as needed, and feel that I am undermedicated. It took me a year to finally be placed on oxycontin. Being young and black has its disadvantages when it comes to pain relief. Docs always figure tha tyou're either abusing or selling. That sucks! Whats worse is that the black docs will treat you worse than the white ones. I could give a shit less what people think of me, I got to manage and take control of my own medical care.

To answer your question about is it the same thing as subs...NO!! Using subs you will not withdraw at first, but when you get off the subs you will for sure...Yes you can use the hospitals and not as a last resort either...They put it in the same wing as mental health, but it's an actual detox place...The place I went to flew me to Florida, and detoxed me for 12 days, then I was in rehab after that for 18 days....It was pretty much pain free, and the people that you are around really help...Again email me and I will give you this place I am talking about...I would just put it down right now, but don't know if that's ok...

speaking on 120mg of morphine sulfate in the morning, 60 in the evening, ill say this, i used to take twice as much, sometimes more. I weened myself down from my usual dosage in about 4 months time, to 120mg a day total(90day, 30night). i felt severely under medicated for about 2 weeks, and i adjusted, but decided to switch up to 120mg instant release to help alleviate some more of the pain, it has helped tremendously since my tolerance has subsided. I manage my pain medication, if i see that the negitive effects oft he drug are overtaking its benifits tot he point of damageing my quality of life, i make an adjustment. If you use large amounts of opiates increasingly over time for its euphoric effects, then you have an entirely different issue, one of which im similarly familiar with. I saw counselors, and was mainly prescribed SSRIs and anti-psychotic drugs, so I eventually worked it out on my own. You may need an objective opinion to help you work your addiction out. You may just need to adjust your medication accordingly lower each month, and deal with it psychologically to the best of your ability; thats how I did it.

I took Vicodin ES (15-16 a day) then several months ago.. stopped taking Vics and replaced this lovely habit with Oxycontin. I take lots. I stopped 5 days ago. The first 2 days I was all stuffy, VERY tired and did nothing but lay down. I have been in a fog for so many years that now 5 almost 6 days in..(off them) I feel weird. Uncomfortable. I actually feel messed up and I am not on ANYTHING. I am EXTREMELY (cannot stress enough) WEAK, my muscles feel like they weigh a ton, its the biggest effort to do anything even wash my hair, open a soda bottle.
5-6 DAYS in off these OXYs is this normal? When will I feel better and not this WEAK, malaised and out of it, confused feeling?
Please someone, anyone know???????

What you feel is very normal.
You can help the FOG by waking up early, excercising and drinking a little caffeine...
The fog is caused by anxiety, its known as de-realization psychologically. It will go away, just a side effect from not having the drug.
You need to give it about 4 good weeks before you start feeling like a person again...4 weks is nothing, just stay strong.

Gina you should be scared...The opiates won't kill ya, but it will feel that way...Now the xanax I don't know about personally, but I hear that can be deadly...You need to find a doctor to help you with all this...Tell them what you are going through, and what you are on, and let them help you.

benzo withdrawl is one of the worst types of withdrawl, it is also hard to taper xanax, so make sure you get with your doc about doing that properly.

Have you been addicted to these drugs? NO, because if you were you wouldn't tell someone to detox cold turkey. FYI: You can Die from detoxing cold turkey. I quit myself. You have to cut back a pill a day for a week, then do the same the next until you are down to one pill.

Good Luck to all who are trying to quit. It's hard, but worth it.
