I used the ortho evra patch for 3 years. I had trouble remembering to take my bc pills, which caused unwanted short periods throughout the month. I really liked being on the patch, never a symptom. We decided that my husband would get a vasectomy (since we won't be having any more children) and I would go off birth control (been on different bc types for 18 yrs). Since I went off the patch 5 weeks ago, I haven't had a period. I was starting to get paranoid, except that I have been cramping. I think I should go to a gynecologist (instead of my regular doc), but am curious if anyone else has had these issues...from the looks of what I have read here, it is more common than not. Any suggestions? Should I just wait and see? I liked knowing when my period was coming...don't like this kind of surprise!

Hi All,

I was on Evra for about 2 years. I stopped using it in March 2008 and my last period was in March. This is end of May and no periods, pregnancy tests have come out negative. My stomach feels blotted. I am yet to take an ultrasound in a couple of weeks to be sure there is nothing wrong going on. This is so weird. If anyone has experienced this pleas elet me know

Has anyone been on OE for longer than 3 years and then discontinued. I have been on it since 2003 and I want to have a baby. Any suggestions?
I've been on OE for about ten years and had fairly regular cycles before that. Just went off 4 months ago, haven't gotten any period yet, or really symptoms of any kind whatsoever. I've been to the doc, they took my bloodwork and found elevated testosterone levels and liver enzymes. My sister also had the same issues, was diagnosed with PCOS and put back on a low estrogen bc. She was having painful ovarian cysts. She still only occasionally has her periods.

I am scheduled for an ultrasound to check for PCOS soon, I anticipate that I have it as well because my mother also had ovary issues when she was younger. They say 8% of women have it and bc is generally the accepted treatment if you are not trying to conceive. If you are not having your periods after more than 3 months you should get hormone levels checked out, PCOS untreated gives you a higher risk of endometrial cancer (uterus lining), ovarian cysts and other issues.

I am curious to see what they determine, whether it is PCOS (which I may have gotten whether I was ever on BC or not) or something that may be linked to all the years of Ortho Evra use.

Ive only been on the patch for about a month or so and during I didnt experience any side effects but recently I stopped because it got too expensive, and have been experiencing swollen sore breast and my period is about a week late. I havent taken a pregnancy test but listening to you guys, am really praying that its just a side effect from stopping the patch.

I was on the patch a few years ago--no side effects. I went back on, recently and immediately I was bloated, my breasts were on fire, yeast infection and naseua. I removed the patch and began heavy bleeding. This bleeding is very unlike my normal period. Has anyone had a similar experience?

The same thing is happening to me. I had my last patch off week feb 19 and my period on feb 20. Period was supposed to come on Mon march 20 but still not here. Have taken home pregnancy test but all are negative. I am still having all of the preggo symtoms though. So confusing
I totally understand! Same story- I stopped my patches on april 5, and got my period the 12th. Than in may I got it on the 13th, like normal. It was lighter and less painful than usual. Since then, nothing! I don't have any other symptoms, just a missed period. It is really worrying me. I was on the patch for 5 years, so I'm just assuming it will take awhile for my body to adjust again.

I feel the same way- I like having it planned out and it makes me really nervous not knowing when it is going to come. I've been off the patch for 2 months (Apri) and had a period the month after (really light, about 3 days) and nothing since then. My stomach is bloated and it feels the way it does before I usually get my period- but so far nothing!

I had been on Otho Evra for 5 yrs and decided to stop taking it on May (because of all the headlines on blodclots etc) which was the last patch, got my period and now I have not had a period yet for June. Can anyone who stopped the patch tell me how long it took for them to "GET BACK TO NORMAL".
I am about to take a pregnancy test!!! wish me luck!

Hi Ladies...I have decided to discontinue the use of Evra, after 4 years of usage. I wore my last patch (3rd) last week, and i am now having a period.

Whilst using Evra, my side effects where slight weight gain, mood swings and loss of sexual appetite. I did start to notice chest pains, and funny heart movements, but put that down to the fact that i smoke. I am 30 and otherwise healthy.

I decided to stop, as we would like to try for a baby, plus all the negative feedback concerning this method of contraception.

I will keep you all posted to my experiences of coming off the patch, any side effects (if any) and so forth..

Bye x

I went off the ortho evra patch after using it for 4 years and have gained several pounds and broke out with severe achne-I never had achne before (was blessed with good skin) I went off of the patch because I wanted to be off birth control for a year before my husband and I have children but after all of these side effects I don't think I will go back on it.

I got off of the patch around this time last year because it made me gain weight. At the time I stopped, it was only about 15 pounds, but just like when I tried the shot, I continued to gain weight--even after I stopped. I've gained a total of 40 lbs this time. With the shot I gained about 30! I won't ever try this stuff again! Has anyone else gained this much weight? I know it did for me because b/f I started, I weighed 125 (with the shot), gained weight and after about a year it naturally just fell off, and I went back to my regular size. Now I just have to wait until the hormones from the patch leave my system...

As an update, I stopped the patch in April. Before and during the use of the patch, my periods were regular. When I got off of the patch my periods took a turn for the worst. They now come whenever they want to. This is the first time in my life that I've ever had irregular periods.

The last month on the patch, I was pretty bad about replacing it each week. My husband and I were still having sex- no condoms. I finally took it off about a month and a half ago for good because we want to have a baby. Now, about 6 weeks since my last real period, I am pretty sure we are pregnant....and my husband is off at war...! I am super happy though:)

I just started the patch yesterday, i was told the patch can cause future birth defects, and i keep hearing complaints of temporary infertility. i am scared and i am wondering if I should try a different form of birth control.

my thoughts:
if there have been records of people having fatal heart attacks or blood clots caused by ortho evra and its still on the market, whos to say they wouldn't take it off due to infertility or birth defects.

I am very concerned.

if you have any advice e-mail me at

It is thought that the continuous exposure to the hormone in the patch, rather than a daily pill may increase your risk for thrombolytic disease (blood clots). However, this is a risk with ALL birth control pills. I am a nurse and although rare, I have taken care of young women who have suffered strokes that were attributed to their hormonal BC whether it be pills or patch. No medication is without risk and all women need to outweigh their personal risk vs benefits. You decrease your risk by NOT smoking and you have less risk under 35. You need to discuss your personal risk factors with your doctor before starting any medication. ASK your doctor what your risk factors are. Take control of your health. The complication is that ALL women respond differently to different hormones. The different stories shared on this website are testament to that!

I was on the patch for 4 1/2 years with no problems. I tried the patch because I always had pretty much constant periods when I was on pills. For 4 1/2 years, I never had any breakthrough bleeding, gained no extra weight. Hoping for fewer periods, I tried the pill Seasonale but again, I had a constant period for 3 months. My prescriber switched me back to Ortho Evra but said I could wear it continually and just have a Patch off week every 3 months, kind of like Seasonale. Well, I have continued to have pretty much a constant period since I got back on Ortho Evra. What a pain!

Luckily, my husband and I feel ready now to start our family so maybe it's a blessing in disguise. I am taking the patch off today.

Hope I get back to normal soon!

Yes, there are risk/benefits that must be individually weighed. The major concern with the new generation birth control solutions, including the Ortho Evra patch, is that those who do not have ANY risk factors have suffered the supposed "rare" side effects. Countless healthy, young women are suffering from severe side effects: blood clots, strokes, etc.
