I haven't heard of any lawsuits. My new doctor changed me from Toprol XL (she said I didn't need it, since I don't have heart trouble, just high blood pressure) to generic Metatoprol. Fortunately, my pharmacist is very strict about which pharmaceutical companies he orders drugs from, and I haven't had any problems (Mylan Pharmaceuticals). All generics are not alike. Check with the Food and Drug Administration online and see if there's a class action lawsuit against the pharmaceutical company that manufactured the generic metatoprol that your mother took. I am so sorry for your loss.

Saw your message on med watch and my son was recently a victim to this drug. Michael had an appointment for his yearly physical on 8/19/10 his blood pressure was elevated without any proper physical and no prior workup before placing my child on medicine he was placed on 25 mg of metoprotol. I need to add my son was mentally disabled with limited speech. We were not told of the side effects of this drug. On 8/30/10 Mike woke up vomitting I thought he had a touch of a stomach virus there was no fever, as the day progress his hands and feet appeared cool within 20 hours my child was dead. Doctors are killing their patients on this drug without any remorse for their actions . Do you know if there is a class action lawsuit that we can enter into> Please reply as soon as you can Family in grief bacheryl1029@q.com |

I am so sorry for your loss....I had really bad problems with Metoprolol and have been doing research on and off since 2008. I'll share some of the things I know about it. 1) For some reason, Dr's in the United States love to prescribe beta blockers as a first line drug for blood pressure. Metoprolol is their sweet baby that they love to prescribe people. Things are different in England. In England, Beta Blockers are the drug of last resort for hypertension.....the reason being that Beta Blockers have worse side effects and less effectiveness than the other options for most people....diuretics, Ace inhibitors, calcium channel blockers being the other options....check this link http://www.bpassoc.org.uk/BloodPressureandyou... and this link http://www.bpassoc.org.uk/BloodPressureandyou... 2) Metoprolol directly affects the central nervous system and easily crosses the blood brain barrier into the brain. Metoprolol is known to cause cns problems such as visual hallucinations, hysteria, and recurrence of PTSD...just google metoprolol + any of those. Unlike Atenolol, another beta blocker that does not cross the blood brain barrier. 3) Metoprolol is cardio selective. It acts on the heart through the brain and nervous system to slow the heart rate and make the heart contractions stronger. These are a few things I know, I recommend that you spend some time researching on the internet...there is plenty material about Metoprolol there. I really think that Metoprolol is a bad option for anyone with hypertension...I'm not a doctor though and I'm sure many doctors would disagree with me. There is also a lot of useful information in this forum where people give accounts of there positive...but mostly negative experiences with this drug. |

I read the blogs about the harmful effects of Metoprolol and the deaths that it caused. Has the same happened to people on the brand name - Toprol XL or does the horrible side effects happen just when on the generic for Toprol? I was on Toprol for years and had no problems than I was switched to Metoprolol and now have IBS or sometimes IBD but don't know if this is due to Metoprolol. I switched back to Toprol been on it for 5 days and so for, no change.

I strongly believe that this medication contributed to, if not caused, the accidental death of my mother on December 27, 2009. I just received the Official Death Certificate yesterday (10/5/10) and am beginning my investigation of the issue. Since you are the named plaintiff in the official lawsuit against Toprol, I would very much like to speak to you. I have created a website ( www.nklurmetoprolol.info ) and an e-mail nklur@nklurmetoprolol.info.(Un til I know that e-mail is working could you please also cc me at ndsk929@gmail.com.) I would very much like to speak to you and anyone else who has been harmed by this medication either by itself or in combination with other medications. As soon as possible, I will put the details of my mother's death to the extent that I am aware of it on the website mentioned above. I did know that within months prior to her unexpected death, she was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance at least once for a dangerous change in blood pressure. This is the first day of my investigations into this matter so please bear with me as I try to bring things together. I would greatly appreciate anyone contacting me with any information they have on the medication, any legal actions, their own stories, and any other information related to metoprolol, including any references or links you think may be useful. Very truly yours, Nilmini Klur and in loving memory of my mother Shiela de Silva |

I have been dealing with high blood pressure for over a year, and my doctor kept increasing my dosage. I was on 200 mg. daily and I had no life. I experienced shortness of breadth that became so extreme I could not take my trash out nor make up my bed in the morning. I was told I had copd by another doc who saw me for an extreme cold in Sept. last year. It has been a nightmare. I went off of it on my own after my doctor wondered why it was not going down my last visit, and asked me what he thought I should do? He also asked why I did not seem conceredabout my blood pressure. I told him that when you have as much difficulty in breathing, that I couldn't worry about the BP. I have been off of it for 8 days now and feeling oh so much better. My readings are still high sometimes and I am a little short of breadth after exurtian, but I can focus on the fact that I need to work on it now.
