on metformin for 8 weeks and no periods

Hi, I was put on Metformin by my OB/GYN because of PCOS..I started with 500 mg Metformin ER..and did not get periods for 6 weeks..then again went to the doctor and she upped the dosage to 1000mg . I still did not get my periods. Its been 9 months now! This is not the first time I am on Metformin..the last time I had, periods were kind of regular. Now its missing inspite of the metformin.

She did a blood test and the result says that my insulin levels are high. The testosterone levels were also high initially but after the 6 weeks of Metformin, they are normal.

I am really worried about my condition. I want to menstruate normally and want to be able to conceive.

How long does it take on an average fr one to have periods after starting Metformin?

I have been taking Metformin for about 4 months now b/c I have PCOS and don't have periods. I also have insulin resistant which from what it sounds like you do too. I started with 500mg for a week then went to 1000mg for a week and then 1500mg is where I stayed for about a month. After about 8 weeks I was worried b/c I hadn't gotten a period yet. I called the doctor and he put me on Provera for 7 days along with the metformin. He told me that after the 7 days on Provera I should get my period with 2 weeks. I did after about 1 1/2 weeks. Then after that I had 2 normal periods. In between those 2 normal periods I went back down to 1000mg of Metformin due to the side effects (upset stomach all the time). My period is now about 5 days late. I know I'm not pregnant so I'm wondering if its b/c I'm not taking enough Metformin. Maybe this is the problem for you as well, 1500mg might not be enough. I'm going to call my doctor if my period doesn't start by next week.

Thanks Lindsay! Guess what? I had gone for another blood work and the nurse called me today and said that my insulin level and testosterone levels are both normal! But I still havent got my periods!!! I am still on 1000 mg Metformin. The nurse told me since everything is normal, the doc wants me to continue on 1000 mg. When I explained the menstruation problem, she asked me to go to a fertlity specialist..I am really worried about this now. I expected the doc would put me on a higher dose of Metformin..or I thought she would ask me to take some other medicine..I am really worried..

Hi I am new to this. I am on metformin 15oomg a day. I have been on it for 2 months now. No period yet. Actually I kind of having a period for 1 day (more like a spot). Since then no period. Also right now, I am having all the systoms of having a period but no period. I am tired and about giving up on ttc. Also I have been ttc for over 5 years, but never serious til now because I am just about to turn 35. Are there any hope?

My doctor asked me to take the metformin for breakfast and at lunch. Also I am on low carb and sugar diet. I was on this med. for 2 months and just found out that I am pregnant for the first time in 5 year ttc. Good luck.

I was also told that I have p.c.o.s. I started with metformin last April. I have been getting my periods later and later. It is now October and I am going on day 46. I was told i have PCOS. i have been ttc for a year and a half. i have only been on metformin 1000mg per day for 3 months. my doctor also put me on clomid and have been monitored every month i am ovulating fine but not releasing any eggs. its been 7 days that i have missed my period took a pregnancy test and was negative. i thought being on metformin i should be regulated?? this is really frustrating. my doctor now wants me to take the shot to induce the release of atleast one egg to see if that will make me get pregnant. is there anyone that had to do this?

I have had many problems since I was age 12. I have endometriosis, PCOS, I dont ovulate. Been trying to conceive for 2 years. We have tried Clomid. I have been on Metformin for 6 months.. Had 4 laps to get rid of my endometriosis, had my tubes cleaned out to make sure they are open and they are...5 months ago did depo lupron to get rid of my endo.. now just waiting for my period to start using follistim, to get me to ovulate.. and hopefully achieve a pregnancy... I understand where many of you are coming from, but try to look at the positive in all of the hard times... always hoping to be pregnant and then it comes back NEGATIVE.. it will happen one of these times.. there are many new medicines these days able to help those of us unable to conceive on our own.. I would tell any of you out there go see a Reproductive Endo.. they are the ones who found I had PCOS and helped me start all of the meds.. OBGYNs do not specialize in infertility... Repro Endos DO!!

I have PCOS and my doc has started me on on Metformin 1500mg. Today is my first day of taking the tablets but reading all this from all of you - i am just too scared whether this really works ? getting the periods regular - will it really work even if I take so many of these tablets everyday ?

Has anyone seen positive results so far?

I've been going through all this crap with haveing cists on my ovaries then after they took them off i did not get pregnant. I've always had regular periods and the dr finally did blood tests and told me that i had PCOS. I've been takeing the metformin for a month and even tho its not long, i've had my first missed period ever but all tests say im not pregnant and im wandering, is it the metformin thats causing my missed period? I thaught it was saposed to help kep it regulated.

Hi there. I am new to this forum. I recently started taking Metformin. I have been ttc and my special did a glucose tolerance test and said my bloodsugar was elavated. I recently saw and Endo. dr. and he said I am not diabetic, but that he would put me on Metformin and help reduce my chances and to bring on my periods. I started out taking 500mg 1X day, then I built up to 1000mg a day. I felt so sick and had these horrible pains under my ribs. I cut it back down to 1 X day (500mg) and the pains went away. Also the nausea went away too. My dr. says once I can tolerate 1X day then start taking 2 pills a day. Also, I feel that I have a yeast infection that I just can't get rid of. Have any of you experienced this? If so what have you done to get rid of it? I have been told that a yeast infections can hurt your chances of ttc. We have been trying since May and so far I have onyl had 2 periods with the help of Provera. Any suggestions?? Is there such a thing too much Metformin?? Thanks so much!!!!

HI EVERYONE I STARTED MY PERIOD AT AGE 9 BUT WHEN I MOVED TO LAS VEGAS AT AGE 15 MY PERIOD STOP. I MEET MY EX HUSBAND AT 19 AND MY PERIOD STARTED, RIGHT AWAY I GOT PREGNANT AFTER I HAD MY SON MY PERIOD STOPED. I AM 22 YEARS AND I WENT TO THE OBGYN AND HE TOLD ME I HAVE POCS, DIABETES. HE PUT ME ON METFORMIN HCL 500MG x3 DAILY AND MEDRIXYPROGESTERONE ALSO KNOW AS PROVERA. I BEEN ON THIS PILLS FOR ABOUT 5 MONTHS AND I STILL HAVE IREGULAR PERIODS AND I STILL HAVENT GOT PREGNANT. MY FIANCEE AND I WANT TO HAVE A BABY TO GIVE MY SON SOMEONE TO PLAY WITH BUT I STILL HAVENT CONCIVE CAN SOMEONE GIVE ME AN ADVISE PLEASE

i was diagnosed with pcos at ther age of 16 i am now 27, i had a baby girl november 2005 after taking metformin. We are now trying for another baby but after nearly 5 months of taking metformin nothing has happend, it is very fustrating but it will happen for you all. Keep on trying and hoping.

I was involved in a major car accident 2 and a half years ago and I went two years with no period after it. I was then finally diagnosed with PCOS and I have been taking Metformin for about 6 months. The first two months I had regular periods but then I went two months and now it has been over two months. I do not beleive this metformin works as everyone seems to have had more trouble since it. I am only 20 but I am looking to have a baby with my partner and I do not know if it is possible whilst my body is in this state.
Does anyone else beleive that chances are the PCOS came about from my car crash, maybe all the stress I was under and I still am under as it is going through solicitors and court. Anyone got any ideas what might cause it?
Please help because the doctor wont tell me anything.

I'm taking Metformin HCL 500 2 times daily. I've been on it for 1 month. I have PCOS. I've had 2 miscarriages as a result. I took that stupid Depo provera shot & then my period just went wacky on me. I've heard you get spots on your feet as a result of metformin. I hate this pill. It makes me soooo sick. I have the runs all day & I throw up like the exorcist at least 2 times daiily. I've had a constant headache ever since I started taking it & I feel aweful. I too get horrible pains under my ribs....like someone is digging there fingers deep under my ribs. I hope that this pill isn't having an adverse affect on my liver & kidneys. My doctor wants to keep me on this aweful pill for 3 months to monitor the effects that its gonna have on my hormone levels. If this one doesn't owrk, then another one called spiranolac-something will be given to me. You know...I'm terrified. I'm 25 years old..I wnat to have a kid w/ my husband & I feel like a failure. I mean...DAMN!!! Ppl look at me & say "oh don't worry!!" But then agiang they aren't the ones that have toi deal w/ this problem. I'm not getting any younger...nor is my husband (34 yrs old!) Sorry guys..I'm really frustrated.

Oh...If any of you have a hormonal hair growth issue....Have you experienced any relief as a result of taking the metformin for this? Do you see less hair? More hair? No change? Plz respond.
