Ever since I started taking Lexapro a year and half ago, I have felt as if "I just dont care" For instance, Christmas is coming, but I dont care to decorate, it really doesnt matter. This is not a depressed feeling, just a lack of indifference towards things that I used to care about.
My friend that is on it feels the same way.
The way we describe it is feeling that our emotions are all in little contained areas, not able to come out..not the bad or the good. It is generally a just "Frankly my dear, I dont give a damn" feeling

The trick with lexapro is it seems to numb you out. I've been on it for a few days and it is like being on a calm form of extacy. There is a senesation oh euphoria but if you are not focused on doing anything you will simple sit around being high. I can understand taking it if you have an anxiety attack but by no means should you continue to take this stuff if you are simply numb and high all the time.

Agreed. I had worse apathy when I was on paxil, but it is definitely still present with lexapro. I barely graduated from college because I just didn't care to go to classes anymore and nothing mattered.

The apathy has recently cleared aside with my new job overseas, but I fear it will come back within the next six months.

I have been on Lexapro for two years now and have seen my grades decline because of the lack of motivation. Like you guys I felt like "I don't care" if I finish the paper in time.

My boyfriend and I have been together for 5 years, basically like a marriage. We own things together and have spoken of spending our lives together. He has always been the one to entertain and speak of future together. For the past 2 months he has been on Lexapro and he is like a different person!!!!!! I knew him pretty well, but he is so different right now! He broke things off with me 2wks ago and wants me to move out and divide all our stuff. We own a home and car and apt. together. I am just blown out of the water. NEVER saw this coming. Its as if he doesn't even care!!!!! SOOOOOO strange, esp when he has been the more emotional one in the relationship in the past. I don't know what to make of this, other than he is being affected by the Lex. He is also a doctor and said that Lex. doesn't have this effect on people that you don't have a "I don't care feeling", and that it doesn't selectively pick certain things in your life. But I am telling you he is more angry, yelling and being mean and the fact that he doesn't care if I leave tomorrow all the way across the country makes me wonder. Any thoughts anyone?????

I am dealing with this right now with my boyfriend. He is a different person and doesn't see it! He is a doctor and has been on Lex. for 2mon. and since then has been angry and doesn't seem to care to me with me. He has ended our relationship after 5years of living together. The thought of this 2 mons ago would have killed him, me leaving. He says that Lex. doesn't have this effect on people and believes its just him making a decision. Since you were on this drug, any insight?????

Me too. I have been on it for close to a year and I feel the same way. I have to really push myself to get things done. I'm now in the weening process and noticed a lot more clarity over the past 3 weeks. BUT, i'm feeling very anxious so I may go back to my 5 mgs to stay sane.

You should not be changing doses without your doctors consent.

I was put on this drug because I have the "I dont care" attitude. Based on these posts, Im guessing this isnt right for me.

As time has gone by, I also decided to go to therapy, since I thought, "geez, I am not so depressed as I was, lying on the couch, wishing I were dead, but still, I have no feelings. I have been very lucky to meet up with a wonderful woman who has helped me alot, but I am lucky that my insurance pays for this.
I have been on Lexapro for almost 2 years now, and the "I dont care" attitude has gotten a bit better, but I still cant cry when I know I am frustrated or angry.
I sort of miss real life, but still dont want to go back to the deep depression.

careful on that "i don't care" . depression does this to you also. i'm not taking for depression but i am taking it "5mg" for OCD and anxiety. i need to "not care" about the bull surrounding me on a daily basis.

i was off lex for about 47 days and just went back on because I was getting too anxious on a daily basis. i can't do without it. until a more advanced drug comes out this is it.

yo,
I'm o it too. Wow so glad i googled side effects and found this page. What a relief. I knew it was the lexapro. I thought I might have been going permanantly into a state of un motivated slackness
Actually im supposed to be at uni right now.
But im at home on my laptop, on my bed, not caring about anything at all.
It's frustrating.
Im young and moved outa homereal young.
I was just in the kitchen cooking dim sims and damn.
I felt like screaming
so numb.
I'm definately going to lower my dosage. Now that I know this. Unfortunately. I complained of lack of motivation to my doctor and he gave me 20mgto take place of the 10 mg i was taking.
I guess he was silly to do that.
Damn him the past week i have taken his advice has been a disaster in terms of life progression.
Damnit lost focus of my goals and everything.
Good on this website and forum ay.
Thanks alot guys for sharing your thoughts.
To be honest I had trouble finding motivation to even get to this website. Hahah. I would laugh but I am in this trnslucent state, pffff i don't care about typing errors. See what i mean. Grrr.
Well I suppose i better rock up to class late.
Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..........

OH my gosh, what a relief to find this page. I've been complaining for the last year to my doctor about this apathy that I feel since starting Lexapro. I really thought I was going crazy. I feel really stuck because I tried weaning down to 10mg from 20mg and felt terrible. I feel like I'm stuck to be on this medication for the rest of my life. Needless to say, I see my doctor tomorrow and will be bringing a copy of these postings to show her my concern is legit. Thanks

I have had the same indifference. I am usually fastidious, but recently my room is a mess, my car is dirty, I don't care. The entire house is suffering. At first it seemed like a relief to not care as much. Now it scares me. My house mate says I have a blank look sometimes. He's even concerned. I'm getting off!

That is funny cause i really dont care either. If you really want to not care about anything, try prozac. that was serious stuff. ugh

shame, i like that name by the way. really cool name.

to not care is kinda not a bad thing. we live in a wicked wicked world. how can a normal human being take such ugliness without being shielded from it? i take 5mg a day and it is a low dose but just enough to take that edge off my fellow crazy brothers and sisters.

I dont know -- its good to care a little bit! I just had my dosage upped to 30mg today (it was 20). The extra 10mg I took today seemed to kick me into neutral! I dont care about working (although I didnt before), and I am feeling rather numb. Depression can do this, but while Lexapro can help you to not feel depressed, it doesnt seem to let you get happy again. Does treating depression mean that you wont be happy anymore?
