This does not reflect the kids as much as it reflects the parents and the society in Hawaii. Economically it is cheaper to feed the kids junk food than to plan and have healthy meals. Instead of forcing the children into learning restraint and discipline, parents just buy their kids get what they want by giving in and buying them candy and sweets. Just look for the kids with fillings on the front teeth. Diabetes, bad dental care, and obesity are just the immediate indictors. These kids will be screwed up for life. Reality check- When you have kids, think about how your parents raised you, for bad parenting skills are not visible for several years.

None of you are correct - respectfully. Juvenille Diabetes is not related to diet unlike Type 2 Diabetes. Juvenille Diabetes is still a mystery and some believe that it is caused by a virus during early childhood.

Thank you Lemon, most idiots posting stuff about diabetes have NO CLUE what the differences are between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Imagine type 1 is like a kid getting cancer, do you blame the parents? Before anymore people start putting their foot in their mouths do some research on autoimmune disorders. Go to this website: childrenwithdiabetes.com if you really want to know the difference.

Perhaps there is a correlation between intake of poisonous junk food, soda, sugar and exhorbitant amount of petro-chemicals and nutrition-less white rice in these diabetic prone areas.

Check it out, you may have a solution...parcel or whole

Yes it does and type 2 does reflect diet and exercise choices. Making a blanket statement about lifestyle choices is not fair to the type 1 diabetic. Type 2 - go ahead and point to diet, exercise, obesity, smoking, drinking, etc. these things however are not why someone gets type 1.

Can you knowledgeable ones give us more in on Type 1 diabetes...is the pancreas the problem.

There are studies I have read of where organ innervation (nerves controlling the pancreas, etc.)are no functioning peroperly due to a host of reasons...this pulls in the mystery causes in some cases. People need to be checked from a broader spectrum than just medical intervention.

Aloha to all who read this and hose w/ Type 1...and 2

Thank you Kazman for your latest statement and Go Warriors for the backup. I guess since I have a child with Type 1 Diabetes, I am defensive about the subject. Truth be told, I did not know much about the different types until my child was diagnosed.

Yes Leota - the pancreas no longer functions at all in Type 1 Diabetics. That too is different with Type 2 diabetes wheras you have a functioning pancreas but it is not functioning correctly.

As more and more cases of Type 1 diabetes in Hawaii are diagnosed it is really important that this new cases seek out resources and education so that they can learn how care for their loved one. For more information contact the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundations.

The local diet is disatrous on anyone's health! Stop eating cheap-beef, salts, and sugars, and covenience/junk foods! It's killing you! Eat fresh fruits and vege's! NO GMO's, NO PRESERVATIVES, NO ARTIFICIAL INGREDIENTS, and TOO MANY STARCH's--TOO MUCH RICE, and NOT ENOUGH NUTS, GRAINS, CHICKEN, FISH, MILK, WATER, FRUITS, AND VEGE'S (RAW!)!

Kimo consider this a favor. Shut your mouth before you make yourself look even more uninformed and uneducated in this area.
