I took Fosamax for 4 weeks and had terrible heartburn and muscle and joint pains plus fatigue and inability to function generally so I stopped taking it after consulting a health professional and it took several months to return to anything like normal.

Though I am on Prednisolone which can cause bone loss I have not been tested for osteoporosis and feel this is an essential step before Fosamax is ever prescribed, i.e. a bone scan should be carried out first before Fosamax is even discussed.

I took my 6th dose of Fosamax last Sunday (the same day that I decided to research the drug.) I feel like my body has aged 10 years. I'm exhausted because bending over, or getting up out of the floor is such an effort. I'm stiff and feel like my spine is going to break. I don't take drugs but was afraid not to take fosamax due to being diagnosed as osteopenia. I will not take another pill. This is what I have found regarding a natural alternative:
PRODUCT: Total Calcium Contains
IPRIFAVONE- helps bind to estrogen sites in the bone tissue. CALICUM- in it's natural physiological ratio MAGNESIUM MANGANESE-necessary to build bone PAROTID: provides glandular support and prevents heavy metal displacement of calcium BORON-helps raise levels of estrogen, testosterone and vitamin D ZINC-for normal bone formation COPPER-deficiency can result in reduced bone density FOLIC ACID-role in homocysteine metabolism, general homocysteine disorders show high homocysteine levels and the development of severe osteoporosis VITAMIN D3-increase calcium absorption STRONTIUM-suports the formation of healthy bone CHLOROPHYLL-contains natural vit K is required to form a protein found uniquely in lg amounts in bone for remodeling and repair WILD YAM a phytonutrient has demonstrated natural progesterone activity with out the drug and side effects HORSETAIL-herbal source of calcium which helps calcification sites in growing bone & stregthen connective tissue
SO I'VE ORDERED THIS I BELIEVE IT IS NUTRI WEST, YOU MAY HAVE TO GET IT FROM A HOLISTIC DOCTOR. ALSO EXERCISE DOING WEIGHT BEARING EXERCISE..I'm using a mini trampoline. Good Luck everyone!!

Hi Everyone,
I have been taking Fosamax for almost 4 mos. I, too, have annoying side effects; pain behind knees, tiredness, achy and lost ability to get a good nights' sleep. Doesn't it seem with so many negatives re: Fosamax, as compared to positives, we should be strongly confronting our physicians, who put us on this drug? Can we really make wise choices, when deciding to stay on or get off the med? Personally, I am feeling like a guinea pig. We seem to have few alternatives, when it comes to arresting bone loss and its' horrifying effects. Let's be wise and complete in making our decisions about Fosamax. I wonder if we can be consistent in taking Calcium and Vitamin D, exercise and stay active in life and combat the need for drugs that only cause us more pain. I am going to give it my best efforts. Oh, I am a young 65 yr. old, active lady. Thanks for any comments.

Yes, I have experienced cramping in my feet and legs and joint pain. It seemed to get better with exercise, but it's still there.

I am going to try and do the same thing. I think I will take the time to research a holistic approach to this problem. In the meantime, get weight-bearing exercise, eat a healthy diet, and make sure you get enough vitamins.
