I'm calling my doctor tomorrow! What so many of you describe in terms of muscular aches is exactly what I've been experiencing for a few weeks. I hope there's a good alternativeto Fosomax. I sure don't want broken bones!

Hi my name is Carol, and I too have hair loss. I have been taking Fosamax about 4 years. I noticed the hair loss last year. A friend of mine brought it to my attention that it might be the Fosamax. I wonder if Boniva (sp) is better? I didn't take my pill today. It's a shame because I recently had my Dexa Scan, and I improved 2%. I don't know what to do. Anyone else taking Boniva?

Hi,my name is Carol, and I too have hair loss. I have been on Fosamax approximately 4 years. I didn't take my medication today, I don't know what to do either. I wonder if Boniva (sp) will be any different, because you only take it once a month. I also take Pepcid Complete, for my acid reflux..

My mon also has been on Fosamax and lately, she has been put on Didronel(http://www.drugdelivery.ca/s3489-s-DIDRONEL.a... ) and as far as I know, she is not experiencing any side effect neither with the medication Didronel and nor with Fosamax ...I guess you are right in talking about it to gynecologist...

forget all fosamax, boniva, actonel and all the bisposphonates. Those are all not natural and do horrible things in your body und can't remove them by any none technique. They rest in your body all your life! And while they are there they harm you a lot: rotting jaw bone, troubles with the heart, the eyes and the GI besides aching bones and muscles. check out www.askapatient.com and type in fosamax. After that go back to something harmless like miacalcin or fortical which is a natural way to protect your bones.

This is infuriating. I've been trying for over a year to figure out why I'm experiencing spooky, dramatic hair loss. I wondered if there was a toxin in my environment. Nobody -- not my doctor who prescribed Fosamax or dermatologist who knew I was taking it --told me of a connection. If I hadn't Googled "Fosamax and hair loss" on a whim and found this info I probably never would have known.

I hope a lot of women will read this post.
The FDA has launched a 6 month study on all
osteoporois drugs as to why MOST women suffer severe muscle and bone pain. The FDA has also made it mandatory for all Drs to tell their patients taking this drug that this is a major side effect to the drugs. I hope they take these drugs off the market, as I can only see it as another VIOXX, and down the road they will realize that these drugs are poison to the system.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued an alert on Monday highlighting potential side effects of a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.

That category of drugs includes several popular medications used to treat osteoporosis marketed under the names Actonel, Actonel+Ca, Aredia, Boniva, Didronel, Fosamax, Fosamax+D, Reclast, Skelid, and Zometa.

The FDA warned the drugs can cause severe joint, muscle, and bone pain. The pain can occur days, months, or even years after patients begin taking the drugs.

The FDA cautioned that healthcare professionals may overlook the drugs as the underlying cause of the pain, delaying the diagnosis.

Pain is listed on the drugs' labels as a potential side effect.

The FDA said severe pain was more common among patients over age 65.

I took Fosamax for 4 1/2 years. During that time my hair became incredibly thin in the front. If I stood under a light you could see my scalp. I also developed heartburn and acid reflux and at times difficulty swallowing--occasionally food swallowed will start to come back up the esophagus. Most unpleasant. I have been off the poison for 1 1/2 years now and my hair has grown back. Hooray! However, I still have acid reflux and occasional bouts with difficulty swallowing. I am also experiencing aches and pains in the bottoms of my feet, my legs, and hips. Sometimes my hands. This was starting while I was still on the Fosamax.
The only good thing from the experience was that my osteopenia reversed itself. But, was it worth it? I think calcium with vitamin D and regular walking exercise would have been a much better route to take. Unfortunately for me my symptoms didn't start until I had taken the drug for a long time. I hope as time goes by these side effects will go too.

WAKE UP...this stuff is ALL CRAP...It is all made from the same POISION....

I know someone who had heart issues from this stuff too..and now digestive disorder that drs. are calling chrohns....how handy? another great coverup.

throw this crap in the toilet.
YOU ARE ALL LETTING YOURSELVES become victims thanks to super slick marketing of a disease dreamed up by a PHARMA company...HELLO!
Did any of your grandparents die from osteoperosis? Not in my family...sorry.
It is as madeup as the Cholesterol scam...more dangerous drugs with many more side effects (dangerous ones) that make them not worth taking...

I'll take my chances with the ONE thing the "condition" can cause, vs. the numerous irreversible ones the drugs can cause.

Think about it..

good luck...

Have been on Fosamx for 4 yrs. Started to tell Dr. of severe ear ringing 3yrs ago. Also experiencing pain in back and arms and recently in my heels. Along with the ear ringing I have had a strange tight sensation above my ear. Had no idea these things could all be realated to taking something that was supposed to help my bone density. I work at a very physically demanding job and put all my aches and pains to that and getting older. Just turning 55. Thanks to all for the info.

New study in Canada shows that women taking fosamax are 3x more likely to have bones that DON'T heal well after a break.(like the dead jaw, only in hip, leg, shoulder, etc) This stuff does not "create" new bone..it takes old dead bone matter and "forces" it to stay on the bone instead of sloughing off and making way for new growth..so remarkably your bone density test looks better...your bones are "thicker" but more brittle. How nice!
Not to mention the "dead jaw" issues...

I started my treatment with Fosamax 3 weeks. Two days after my first pill I experienced a severe gastritis of which I recovered and I have been suffering of severe muscles and joints pains ever since. My doctor sent me laboratory tests to determine if I have remathoid arthritis or lupus but all tests were negative. Has anyone experienced severe pain in muscles and joints accompanied by low fever after taking Fosamax ? I am very confused and sad.
I haven't taken Fosamax before but I take Vytorin & I am having muscle & joint pains. I also was tested for R.A. but my test came back neg. Please let me know if you take Cholestrol med.'s.

I wouldn't give any of these wonder drugs to my pets...never mind swallow them myself.

Check out www.spacedoc.com and you'll be throwing that vytroin in the toilet. ALL of the cholesterol meds are HIGHLY dangerous. ALL can cause severe muscle and joing pain...and muscle damage that sometimes doesn't go away.
We have 2 folks at our church damaged by these drugs...one is wheelchair bound and can hardly speak, the other has auto-immune issues.
NONE of these drugs are good for the body. For the one potential "good" thing they "may" be doing, they are doing numerous bad things.
In my opinion, and that of many others too, the risks DO NOT outweigh the benefits.
We all want a magic pill to keep us health, but for some conditions it just isn't out there. We have to accept that we need to change our lifestyles....better diet, exercise...and not worry about what the NY ad-executives and BIG PHARMA have dreamed up to scare us into taking their poisions. THEY are making billions of dollars by maiming us! The FDA DOES NOT stand to protect the citizen. The FDA is "run" by BIG PHARMA...it is sickening.
Please throw all of these dangerous meds down the toilet. Don't become another victim.

I have been taking fosamax for approximately 2 years. I have jaw pain all the time unless I take motrin. Once the motrin wears off then the jaw pain returns. I have been checked by my doctor and dentist and they of course can't find a reason for the pain. My doctor switched my fosamax to boniva. No help. I also have muscle pain in my arms which makes it hard to sleep at night because the motrin doesn't help the muscle pain. My hair is brittle and thin on top since I began the medication to repair/prevent bone loss. I was diagnosed with sever osteoporosis but I decided to take my chances and not take the medication. It has been approximately five months since I quit. I still have jaw pain and muscle pain. It may be getting a little better but it's hard to tell. I hope this gets out of my system soon. I wouldn't recommend taking any of these drugs because they have had a negative affect on the quality of my life.

- reduces the risk of fractures
- helps with the pain
- over 30 years of safety data
- no side effects
- increases the quality of life
- helps the microarchitecture of your bones

I definitely think it's possible. I used Fosamax for a short time and started losing my hair. At first I thought it was due to age, but the loss was sudden and started about 3 mos after starting the Fosamax. I asked a number of doctors if it's possible that Fosamax could be the cause, and all said no. However, I stopped taking Fosamax because of the hair loss. It took a few months for the hair loss to stop, but now it has, and a year or so later, it seems that finally hair is growing back. I will never take any osteoporosis drug again. I don't trust that these drug manufacturers really know what they are doing. And the doctors just go along with the studies conducted by the drug manufacturers. By the way, I am off Fosamax, but am taking vitamin D and exercising, and my bone density increased slightly. I now avoid taking any drugs unless my physician tells me it is absolutely necessary. It seems to me that a really healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight, regular exercise, and good sleep habits can cure a lot of ailments. I would always try that first and only take a drug if that is the last resort.
