Each time I re-try usage of Evista, I notice that I begin to gain weight. I wondered if this was my imagination or not. Then, I ran out of it, and did not use it for 4 months. I had joined Weight Watchers, and was losing steadily. Now that I am back on Evista (and have NOT changed my eating habits) my weight is going back up. What do others think?

Dawn, I found your posting as result of doing a Google search about Evista and weight gain. I have gained weight also and I am connecting it to the addition of Evista. Now I must weigh (pardon the pun)the pros and cons of taking Evista. My mother died of breast cancer so the new studies about the effectiveness of Evista in breast cancer prevention is a big plus. I have had oesteopenia for several years and I do not tolerate Fosomax well. These are 2 BIG reasons to take the Evista. On the other hand, my weight gain has been a major concern for me. I wake up in the middle of the night from hunger. I go downstairs and overeat whatever is handy and then go back to bed. I have a constant craving for sweets and carbs and no willpower to not eat them. I am not a normally heavy person but I have gained about 15 pounds in the last 3 or 4 months. Yikes!!!! Do you have the constant hunger also?

Dawn - I just had a visit with my Doctor and he said that the positive of not getting breast cancer by taking Evista was not true. When combined with other studies - it had no positive impact
in that area. My Doc also stated that it has come out very recently that users of Evista may be more prone to strokes. He said it would be in the news soon. I've been on Evista for 5 years
but I'm switching. I can't answer to the weight until I've been
off the Evista for awhile

I also have had recent weight gain, and unrelenting hot flashes (past 4 years). My hunger has been uncontrollable...something I have never before experienced. I am discontinuing the Evista, and replacing it with Actonel. I hope that works for both the flashes and the appetite.

Hi. I;ve just been given the medication to use. I've had osrteoporosis for more than 5 years , I'm not post menopausal and I haven't had any treatment till now. I already have a weight problem and I really do not want to agrevate that problem. I've already had an appetite problem and have been working hard at reducing the amount of carbs I do eat now. After reading what you have written I am hoping that the Evista tabs don't bring me back to square one with combating my weight problem as I'm a diabetic and need to lose weight.
I know that not treating the osteoporosis however can lead to other problems and I already suffer from much backpain as a result of not taking care of it. I had a grandmother whose osteo had her using a walking stick and she was almost bent double before she reached the age of 50 (fortunately the treatment she went on 40 plus years ago helped her and her posture had improved). So for me I need to weigh up the pros and cons or look up alternatives for treatment. I am 44.

Has anyone been prescribed Evista to reduce the fibrocystic lumps in the breast flare-ups? My doctor seems to think that Evista would take care of the problem, but the mroe I read about the side effects the less convinced I am that I should even consider it.

My experience with Evista has been terrible hot flashes. It got to the point that it seemed I had a bad temperature most of the time. I never knew how to dress, for fear of badly overheating. This was odd for me: normally the chilly person.
The indication of ovarian cancer in tests with mice was a threat, too, as that is harder to detect than breast cancer.
.much happier with no drugs.

I have been on Evista for three or four years, and Actonel for about a year longer to treat a serious case of osteoporosis. I was once 5'4" and weighed 120 lbs, now I'm 5'2" and weight close to 140. I am beginning to think that my constant HUNGER is caused by Evista. I eat and eat and the hunger comes right back. I'm thinking of taking my Evista just before bedtime to see if that will help with the constant hunber pains. If not, I'm going to talk with my doctor about this continuing unpleasant problem.

I have been on Evista for 2 years for osteopenia. In the beginning I had an increase in hot flashes, but they have nearly disappeared. I have gained weight, but associate it more with lack of proper exercise. I don't suffer from the hunger, either. I wish you all well. I would rather suffer from weight or hunger than a broken hip.

I have been on Evista for about 3 months -- and put on 20 lbs -- plus retaining a lot of water - my legs and feet are huge and tight at the end of the night. It does alleviate some by morning but not entirely. I was put on this rx due to bone density declining.

Hi Denise: I just wanted to comment about Actonel. I had been prescribed Actonel for osteoporosis and took it for about two months. I developed swelling on the right side of my throat, a lump and a hoarse voice. I went to my doctor suspecting it might be the Actenol, he suggested that I stop the medication and after three weeks the symptoms went away. The potential serious side affects of Actenol, Fossamax and/or Boniva can be very serious. That is not to say that other medications including this one (Evista) do not have the potential for serious side affects. My doctor has switched me from Actenol to Evista, I will try it and see what happens.

I started taking Evista about three weeks ago. I already have gained 12 pounds and have not altered the way I eat. Seems weight gain is a major problem. But, I have been off it a week, eating like I usually do and can't get the weight off!

I have had side effects with other osteoporosis Rx, such as severe bone pain, has any one experienced this with Evista?

I was on Boniva for 3 months and had terrible pain in my esophogaus..and eventually got very horse.. so my doc switched me to EVISTA in Dec. I have gained 10lbs since then!! My weight has never fluctuated, and I am quite frustrated with this gain!
I am also PRE menopausal, and wondered if I should even be taking Evista?

I took Fosomax last year for three months and steadily gained weight and had joint pain so I quit. I have been taking Boniva now for the past three months and I look and feel huge! Plus, my stomach bothers me and I have more hot flashes than ever. I`m thinking of quiting Boniva too.

I gained about 18 lbs. I lost it in about 3 weeks after stopping the Evista. On top of that, doctor said it is not good for osteopenia - and maybe good for osteoperosis.

Well,I have osteopenia, but I`m not taking anymore Boniva. Between my stomach being upset and the weight gain, I`ve had enough. I`m going to let nature take it`s course, eat healthy and stay active like I have all along. I just don`t like taking pills that are suppose to help one thing yet make you feel miserable along with it. Some things are better left alone.
