I was on Lisinopril and had dry cough so switched to Diovan. After 4-6 months, I developed an even worse cough on Diovan. I went off of it and the cough resolved after about a week. Now I am just on HCTZ but a strict diet and weight loss regiment to see if I can control the BP with lifestyle changes as I do not tolerate any of the meds.

I had a horrible cough on Diovan for a year!! Finally I changed meds. I am coughing a lot less after only 5 days. I'm on Tekturna now, a totally different class of drugs. My Doctor knew my cough was from Diovan and told me that any Ace Inhibitor drug would also make me cough! Diovan is not an ace inhibitor, but it works the same way I guess. So yes. The cough is from Diovan!! It also made me totally fatigued, headachy, feeling unwell.

Weird Throat Symptoms wrote: <quoted text> I have been on Diovan for 3 years. Around 3 months ago I developed a tickle in the throat, followed by a sort of "something in the throat" feeling, which caused me to virtually feel like I had to swallow every 10 seconds, which didn't help. An ear nose and throat doctor suggested it might be the Diovan. I've been off the Diovan for around a week now and the symptom is just about completely gone. It was terrible. My grandpa developed the same symptoms recently. I was wondering if you could tell me what our doctor switched you to and if it improved. Thanks

I recently talked to my doctor and told her about the coughing and the enalapril. Now that I have insurance to pay for the meds, she was able to give me the diovan. I took it for about a week and noticed a slight cough coming on. She had also given me a new inhaler. I didn't know which one was causing me this new bout of coughing, but it got worse and I quit taking both for a few days. I NEVER use the inhaler now. I bite off tiny pieces of the diovan every other day and I don't have any problem with coughing at all, although I am worried about my HBP. For the week or so after I stopped taking that stuff, it felt like I had a cold, but it didn't feel like any cold I had ever had before. It's all better now, but I still sound stuffy. But, with asthma, I always sound stuffy. The only thing that really clears me up is Predisone. Because it's a steroid, my old DR. wouldn't give it to me because of my HBP. I'm going to bring it up to my new DR. the next time I visit. I'm thinking maybe, if I'm closely monitored, I can start on a very low dose. It's always something.

Sorry, Lisa. Not being an MD, I can't tell you what is best for your HBP. However, I am now pretty sure that, in my case, it was the inhaler for my asthma that was causing me the problem. I am on Diovan with no coughing now. But, I've done some research and learned that, if one has lung issues like asthma, any medicine whose name ends in "pril" will probably experience coughing. There are so many HBP meds out there, I'm sure you and your MD will find the one that's right for you. Just the other night, I took a hit of my inhaler and by the next night I was coughing already. I'll have to discuss other ways to deal with my asthma.

My mother has been taking Diovan for over a year. She has had a chronic cough. She was previously taking Lisonopril and experienced side effects. The terrible cough is a strangling type of cough which lasts for about a minute. Sometimes it is very intense and brings water to her eyes. She has been given Prednisone which worked well for about a month and the coughing fits disappeared. The coughing has started again and the doctors seem to be at a loss as to why the coughing spells keep re-occurring. Pulomonary doctors don't seem to think the Diovan is the reason for the coughing. I am trying to get the Diovan presciption changed. It worked to get her blood pressure under control, but seems to have caused other problems.

It's scary when you don't know what's causing weird stuff. It's especially scary when the Dr's can't figure it out. I was on Prednisone for asthma. It worked for about a month, then the symptoms came back. I guess we're supposed to get a Prednisone treatment every month. My Dr. won't let me be on it anymore...I guess because of the HBP. Anyway, there's a comment on this forum about honey. The poster says she took 2 TBLSPN in the morning and evening and her cough got better. I know I've used Manuka honey for other health issues. I guess any kind of honey will do, but Manuka is more medicinal or so I'm told. It might be something you can try too. It couldn't hurt...unless your Mom is diabetic.

You're right not to just take your doctor's word for it. It's your body and you have a responsibility to do the best you can for it. If you feel strongly that your coughing might be caused by this med or another, challenge your doctor. Medications react differently in different bodies. You might be allergic to this particular one. Ask him if there are any other meds you can try...there are so many. Ask him why you MUST take this one as opposed to another.

6 months---oh no. Been on Diovan a year and the coughing didn't start until couple of months ago. I hate it. Gets worse around 4-5pm. I'm going to go off over the holiday weekend to see if the cough lessons. The scarey thing is----we all have this cough and changing meds doesn't seem to help.I went off statins and managed to bring my cholestrol down with herbs etc, but don't know of any that bring bp down. Does anyone know a "natural" way to bring bp down? Mine is well under control with the bp meds, but this coughing-----yuk!

If you're overweight, which is one of my problems, you should try a healthy reducing diet. Also, my aunt used to swear by fresh garlic. I don't know if the pills work the same way. Look into more activity. When I went to the gym, they would take my BP before I got into all my exercises. At the end of all my routines, they'd take my BP again and it was lower. No or less booze. Same with smoking. Cut down or cut out sodium. Talk to your doctor about your potassium level, kidney disease, adrenal gland disease, or thyroid disease. Before you go off your meds, let your doctor know. You'll have to be monitored carefully.

I've been taking Diovan for almost 2 years. Almost immediately I started with Upper respiratory infections but didn't put 2 and 2 together until now. The respiratory infections are so bad I can't get over them without going on antibiotics and prednisone. I've never had alergies in my life but now have them. I've gained 10 pounds since starting Diovan. I've also now developed AFIB which I didn't have before I started Diovan and now have to be on Cardizem for the rest of my life. I've noticed vision changes. I'm experiencing constant knee pain which is so painful it keeps me awake at night. I've tried to lose weight and feel I've put forth great effort to do so and over a 4 month period was only able to lose 6 pounds. I'm going to make an appt with my cardiologist to try to find another blood pressure medicine that might be better for me. I feel like the side effects are ruining my health.

I don't feel bad other than this productive cough. I awake in the night and cough about 30 min to get my chest clear before I can get back to sleep. Anyone been on Diovan this long and developed anything like this?(racnich@comcast.net) I too have been on Diovan for more than 5 years. For the last couple of years I have developed colds and coughs that went on for months. Coughing fits and up all night coughing has been a nightmare. A pulmonologist told me to get off Diovan but never replaced it with another BP med. I didn't believe the Diovan was the culprit and but now after reading all these comments I see Diovan could very well be the problem. Now I've been sick since early Feb. and have seen the Dr. twice. After reading your comment and others I will ask for another BP med.

About three years ago I was on lisinoprile and after a while I began with a persistent cough. I visited three doctors. I told them that this drug was causing the problem. They did no believed me. Finally I was switched to Diovan, but at this moment I began coughing again. I will see the cardiologist next week. Darla Creekmore wrote: I took Lisinopril for 6 mos and developed a cough...Dr, changed me to Diovan and I still suffered a cough just like all of these. I just started a Channel Blocker Plendil, but it doesn't seem to control the BP as well Anyone taking anything that works? I guess if you did, you would'nt be on this site. ll

People who have cough as a side effect of ACE inhibitor usually get prescription change to Angiotensin II inhibitor. However in my mom's case, the cough still didn't go away.

If you've been taking Prednisone with any regularity, that could be the reason for your weight gain and your inability to lose the weight faster. That's one of its side effects. Prednisone can be a very dangerous drug, especially for those of us with HBP. It's been a while since your post. I hope you're better now.
