I took diclofenic 2 years ago and suffered bad side effects. At the time it could not be proved because of chemicals being used on a farmer's field near where I lived. Last week-end on a trip to Ireland with bad pain in a strained tendon in my foot I was prescribed the above. After only 2 tablets I ended up in hospital where it was proved I was allergic to it. I suffered severe redness on my hands turning to severe itching which in turn spread throughout my body. On arrival at hospital half an hour later I went into uncontrollable shaking from head to foot. Totally involuntary and had to have 3 shots of antihistamine to calm me down. Left hospital 3 hours later in an upset state of fear and panic. Be aware if this happens to you.

Madeleine I have taken this drug for over ten years without serious side effects. Dosage was 50mg increased to 75mg..The secret, in my case, was to take it only when required as the drug works quite quickly. Unless a doctor tells you otherwise, take it in short courses when required.
Yes constant long term use can be a problem, speak to your doctor. There are drugs which counteract the possible side effects of Diclofenic but in my case it had side effects.

I have been on voltaren for three weeks now,, and I have such a spare tire I am ready to go off it, but it really works for my osteo-arthritis. So what is the alternative?

I have been taking Voltaren(diclofenac) since 1983 when I blew out a disc in my back. They helped me get over the initial trauma, and not have to have spinal fusion that the doctor wanted to perform. I eventually had to have back surgery on two occasions, each time I found the pills were able to keep me pain free. I am a relatively big person, 250 lbs, 6', so I am able to tolerate the maximum dosage of 200 mgs per day. I also found that that when I broke an arm, I used the drug extensively to create a pain free environment while the break healed. I am not aware of any side effects, even though I know there are folks who have had side effects. The one major concern I have is the long term effect on the kidneys if there is a prolonged use of the drug.
