i have read all the comments about tramadol causing seizures and how bad the withdrawal side effects are. i have taken tramadol and thought that since it was not narcotic it was a lot safer than oxycontins or vics. were the seizures and withdrawals in cases of high doses? these comments made me a little nervous because i thought this was the better option and now am not so sure.

From my knowledge the seizure's are due to excessive dose's. I know 6 people that take tramadol in high dose's on a regular basis. I'm talking like 400mg's a day. Out of those 6 i know of one that has experienced the seizure's on one occasion. From my personal experience i would say that the withdrawl's from tramadol are pretty harsh, it's very very hard to sleep after you stop taking them, also you tend to sweat excessively and have head ache's. The withdrawl's are not as bad as opiate's such as vicodin or methadone but it really depend's on the person.

You should do some of your own research on tramadol addiction and seizure's.

Can someone explain to me the properties of Ultram (Tramadol) and exactly why it is not a controlled substance? If it's a synthetic opiate, why isn't it classed the same? How can it work like a narcotic and not have the same properties of a narcotic or opiate? My doctor gave me the script for pre and post surgery and he's convinced it's not addictive, but I think he's wrong. What is mu binding part? I took it for a short time about a week, but my sponsor isn't speaking to me. There is confusion with this medicine.

Incorrect. Ultram is NOT a narcotic medication. It is an analgesic that works like a narcotic without the same properties of narcotic medications.
Receptors and such. It's NOT controlled for a reason. That reason being, it does NOT have the same properties as narcotic medications, merely the same function.
Any advise you can give me for my chronic shoulder pain after two surgeries? The pain is so bad I am on two percocet with soma 4 times a day and that just takes a slight edge off. I am going to pain managent in two weeks they might put me on Kadian.

Tramadol is a controled drug, you can't get it without a script and I believe it is listed as a narcotic. I have been told that people have opiate receptors in their brains and Tramadol is supposed to have whatever those receptors pick up in opium removed. The pain relief is the same without the euphoria of a standard opiate.

I took it for a short time and had good pain relief but it gave me terrible constipation and made me very jittery. Those are the downside for some people I have read. You are probably right about it being addictive. Even though the high isn't there it sure does speed one up, at least it did me. I think a person could become addicted to the rush...maybe.

I didn't like it and am now on hydrocodone 10mg 4/24. The constipation is terrible and the pain relief not that great but it beats the Tram...

Gosh, I feel sorry for you. How in the world do you even function taking soma 4 times a day, one puts me out.

I've never heard of Kadian, but I was on Oxycontin and it is a great pain reliever but the side effects were killers...constipation and absolute loss of sexual function, both of those are not nice!

Good luck and please keep in touch and let me/us know how things go and what you end up taking.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tramadol

NOPE its shaved of a chemical from Codeine

Which comes from a plant we know as "Opium Poppy"

The Papaver somniferum secretes Codeine, Morphine and Thebaine

Tramadol is an atypical opioid which is a centrally acting analgesic, used for treating mild to moderate pain. It is a synthetic agent, as a 4-phenyl-piperidine analogue of codeine.

Tramadol is 1/10th as potent as morphine...

What about switching to tramacet, which has 37.5 mg of tramadol, which is a quarter of a Zytram. then you can wean down nice and gradually.

Ultram is a synthetic narcotic, as is methedone and some others, do some research before opening your mouth.

Ultram ER made me feel real again. My fibromyalgia at its worst, I couldn't sleep, my head and shoulders hurt constantly. Nothing worked. No pain medications touched my pain and I was so tired of hurting, I just wanted to lay in bed all day. I tried all they typical chronic pain management drugs, amnitryptolin(sp?), Cymbalta, muscle relaxers, you name it. I began taking Ultram and at 200 mg ER, my life is back. I can sit in front of my computer again and I've got energy again. My headache is nearly completely gone and I've stopped being so irritable with everyone. I love this stuff. I'm afraid to give it up, and go back to where I was.

Where were you Amy? Had you taken other pain meds before or is this your first experience with them?
