I have been taking Cytomel for about two years, and have always found the potency to be consistent from one prescription refill to the next. Until recently, that is, last Tuesday I received a partial prescription refill of Cytomel from Walgreens that I have to question if it contained any T3 at all. After taking it for four days I was so hypothyroid my heart was in constant pain, even after I doubled my usual dosage of Cytomel from 25 ug to 60 ug with no apparent effect. I returned to Walgreens yesterday to discuss the problem, which they had no explanation for, and to pick up the rest of my refill. Thankfully, this batch of Cytomel contains plenty of T3 and this morning after taking just 7.5 ug I now have hyperthyroid symptoms, elevated pulse, pressure headache, and ringing in my ears, while normally in the morning I take 10 ug. While it is too soon to leap to conclusions about this new batch, there is little doubt that the old batch was seriously below its labelled potency. I wonder if anyone else is having similar problems?

I think I was mistaken about about the Cytomel potency problem. I have very complicated thyroid problems, and at this point it looks like Cytomel is the only treatment that can help me, so I do want to apologize. I don't want to get into all the complications, save to say that I have been taking Iodine as well, also tyrosine, in the hopes of making my own thyroid and coming into balance. At this point it looks like that doesn't work for me, as far as I could tell, with other intervening factors making it impossible to say for certain. Happy Chinese New Tear!

If you have Hashimoto Thyroiditis, don't hope to get your thyroid gland "fixed". Only 5% of patiens with hypothyroidism recover. 95% of patient will remain on thryoid meds for life. Hashi's is an auto-immune disease: anti-bodies are attacking the thyroid gland.
It is possible that between refills you actually had a thyroiditis, meaning that your thyroid function has gone down and the dose needs to be increased.
It is possible that the medication has been kept in the pharmacy storage under poor environmental conditions or is simply pass due.
Keep us informed!

I have been hypo for 10 years and recently have had three serious periods of sleeplessness while on Cytomel and Synthroid together. Has Cytomel's potency increased?

i just had my thyroid removed last Thursday. It was so large that it distorted my voice box. Anyway, I began with cytomel 1/2 pill 3 times a day, first dose taken Friday evening. Following taking each dose I experience tingling in my fingers, lips and tongue and sometimes across my back. Since it's Sunday, I can't reach the doctor and wonder if I should go to the emergency room. I'm wondering if this is normal. Not a sensation I would want all the time.

Edie: don't worry no the pharceutical company doesn't change around the potency of their products just for fun. But potency problems can occur. See other posts in this forum on the topic.
You can now be in need for a raise in dosage or maybe you need to lower it. If you are a little hyper or hypothyroid, this can cause sleeplessness.
Diane: normally the tingling will go away, its just a temporary effect from starting the medicine. If it doesn't go away, talk to you physician.

I have read this board for awhile and am glad to see Olivier posting. These are my numbers STSH .02, Free T4 .8, T3 Free 4.3, Thyroid Peroxidase <10, Thyroglobulin Antibodies 69. I have been diagnosed with Hishimoto's. I am currently on Synthroid 50 mcgm. Cytomel 5 mcgm was added 6 weeks ago and and the disage keeps getting changed because it gives me palpitations. Originally the doctor wanted me on 3 Cytomel a day and the pounding of my heart in my ears went on for 24 hours every day. He has lowered it to 1 1/2 a day but that's not much better. I have taken it down to 1/2 pill a day and still have the same problems. I can hear my heart pounding in my ears at intervals, not all the time like it was before. I also cannot sleep at night. If I am able to go to sleep I will wake up about 2 hours later and be awake for the night. SOmetimes I can't get to sleep at all and just toss and turn all night and I am so tired of this. I never had sleep problems before. Olivier, you seem so knowledgeable about all these doses, can you shed any light on this?

.02 is a little low for the TSH. Lower a little the Cytomel. Wait for 2 weeks. If you retrieve a nice sleep pattern you are at the right dosage. Your TSH levels do not change overnight with cytomel or synthroid dose changes.. Arrythmias are an indication your tsh is too low along with sleeplessness. If your MD lowered your drug doses it takes 4-6 weeks for changes to occur and you might still feel bad until your dose becomes "normal for you".. The new TSH range is .3-3 No longer .5-5.. Make sure you are seeing an endocrinologist who is listening to your symptoms. You will not feel better overnight. You can also have panic attacks with a low tsh.
