I am 70, too.
I shall get the coumadin and hope for the best. Thrombosis is in my family as well as high blood pressure and strokes. Opting to ditch the blood thinners is out for me! I think that stress does not help, either. Maybe I shall try that other pill SINTROM as long as it has no dire interactions with all the other meds that I am taking. |

I too am on warfarin and have a terrible itch around my scalp and on my neck. Been on warfarin for 2 months and I think i'm going to see a dermatologist to see if she can get me on a pill of some sort of relief the itching. Anyone have any tips on what's worked for them to get rid of the itch?

I was put on warfarin and was having the same problems.......come to find out the vicodin ( I had multiple pulmonary embolisms and had alot of chest pain so i was on pain pills until the blood clots broke up) was causing the itching and the rash. IDK if this is the case here but I would diffently look at all the other meds you are on too.........I have learned alot of the symptoms I wanted to blame on the warfarin ( I am only 30 and I never had any of these problems until this happened) was actually my medical condtion or the other meds I was on. After having my meds adjusted ( my INR was off the chart there for awhile) I have been doing really good, i feel super lucky. I wish everyone the best :-)

Add my story to the list of SEVERE allergy to coumadin. My brother threw enormous amounds of DVT and Pe's after a bone graft surgery. They had him on warfarin IV and switched him to coumadin. They rashes were severe with HUGE welts all over his body. No amount of steroid or itch cream helped. After two nights we begged for something different and they gave him Arixtra (an injection). The redness, purplish face and welts subsided immediately. He's home now with Arixtra and the docs are saying he may have to be on it for a year or more. Perhaps forever. The insurance company will pay only up to a years worth. At $1500 a month we face the future with outrageous fears. Will we have to pay or watch him from blood clots? This is a nightmare! AND THIS ALLERGY IS REAL!

I've been experiencing an awful rash for over a year since starting Warfarin. We tried brand name with not change in systoms.
Not sure if this is an allergic reaction to the drug or not. PCP, several specials an hemotologist deny. I'm still suspicious. What does your rash look like, do you feel ill, does it itch, burn, or cause pain? My latest flare appears on my left leg (total knee replacement 2002) with several DVTs. I have Factor V, unknown to me prior to surgery. Both of my arms from my wrists to inner elbows are beet red, burning/stinging and I experience a sensation of needles sticking into my skin.,,also some swelling of my arms from my wrist to elbow. I've been to every known specialist with no help. I have an appointment at the UCONN Medical Center next week with the toxicology department. Has anyone ever been there? Who have you seen, which specialists understand this condition? Any information you can provide will help. I hurt physically and now I have a newborn/premature grandchild that I'm not allowed to visit due to this rash. I really need to find out what is going on. Thank you, Blessings Sandy Richmond |

Thank you God for discovering this site! I have been on warfarin/coumadin for more than a year now following a DVT that followed wound surgery resulting from acute cellulitis infection. I am 73.
Drs have had a terrible time regulating my coumadin dose. I have ben as high as 20mg a day and never lower than 10mg. I am currently on 12mg. I have had one serious bleeding episode and periodically experience black and blue bruises on my arms or thigh. Recently,(last month or so) I have developed skin rashes on my right leg, thigh; within last week I have rashes on leg leg and thigh also. I have experienced intense skin dryness and itching too. My hair which is normally very thick seems to be thinner now though I don't see it falling out. INR levels seem to vary by weight loss and lymphedema control. I have mild hypertension and am meds for that along with lipitor and metforin for very diabetes or pre-diabetes. Recently have been treated for a skin wound that developed on my left leg and took one year to close (that has just happened--almost simultaneously with the skin rash. Over the course of my two year battle with cellulitis,, related surgery, and wound care along with the blood clot, I have developed skin allegies which I never had before as well as allergies to every kind of adhesive, plastic, paper, clear plastic bandage known to human beings. I am having great difficulty with diet, supplements, meds, herbs and coumadin use. My high dosage probably important here. I am constantly asking doctors about these symptoms and problems. Have ben prscribd various skin creams etc. which don't work or provoke more allegic reactions. My regular dr is away and hasn't seen these new and extensive red rashes, but I am not hopeful of her response. DOES THIS SOUND FAMILIAR TO ANYONE? AND, MOST IMPORTANTLY, DOES ANYONE KNOW OF COMPLEMENTARY OR ALTERNATIVE MDS IN WASH. DC OR ITS SUROUNDING AREA? I AM DESPERATE TO GET ON A HEALTH PROGRAM THAT RECOGNIZES AND DEALS WITH COUMADIN COMPLICATIONS/RACTIONS, ESPECIALLY IN CONJUNCTION WITH OTHER CONDITIONS. IF YOU HAVE INFORMATION, YOU CAN REACH ME AT PALOMA3DC@COMCAST.NET, AND POST ON THIS SITE SO OTHERS MAY BENEFIT. THANK YOU FOR PATIENCE IN READING THIS AND FOR ANY RESPONSES SENT. |

I have been on warfarin almost six months and broke out with raised hives and intense itching all over. I tried vinegar and that seems to help somewhat for a few hours (on a cloth and wipe onto skin). It is the worst rash I have ever had and I do wish my doctors office had addressed this issue. But like the sharp bone and muscle pain that I also reported.....no response. I would think I should have been taken off this medicine months ago with th is and other terrible side effects.

I have been on Warfarin for 6 years and have never linked my severe rash with Warfarin until a conversation I had with someone which made me think it could be a link. I started working for a company that manufactured wooden furniture and I was told that I had developed an oversensitisation to wood, grass, cats. The rash is unbearable and it comes out looking like welts. I have been taking an allergy tablet every day for the entire 6 years and 99% of the time this eases the rash completely. Does this sound similar to what other people are experiencing?
