Abdominal Blood Clots

I have been on Warfin since May ’08. I had an abdominal blood clot that is being attributed to Birth Control Pills. It eventually killed off part of my small intestine and I had to have surgery to remove the small intestines. I am a 34 year old non-smoker. The majority of what I am reading are from clots in the legs. Is there anyone reading this that is on the drug due to clots found in the abdomen?

I had an abdominal clot, that formed after surgery that ended up in my lung, which was pretty scary. I had a previous clot in my leg the year before due to birth control and a long flight. Do they know that it started in the abdomin, or if it just traveled to the intestine?

Sandy,
There were 2 clots - One was in the Mesentari Vein and one in the Portal Vein. So I cannot answer your question. But those were firsts for me. I haven't had any any where else. They are attributing it to birth control pills because nothing came back on my blood work and I didn't have any of the other causes. Luckly for me they did not travel anywhere. And I am so lucky b/c the other possible outcomes are terrifying.

clots can form from anywhere, however most of the time they happen in the legs. I have a protein S deficiency which is the cause of mine, and should only have to stay on coumadin for 6 months this time. If I end up with another they say it will most likely be for life. Not fun! Good luck I hope you don't have anymore problems.

I also had a clot in 2005 which caused an ischaemic bowel and I lost most of my small intestine. My consultant tells me that I have the minimum amount of small intestine for survival now. I had cancer before this and they think this may be the reason for the clot. I feel extremely lucky to have come through this.

I just got out of the hospital and I need to know what is going on with my body. After emergency surgury in the ER for blood clots in my lung, spleen (gone), appendix (gone)and small intestine (1/3 taken) I was told that they have no idea what has caused my blood clots. I have been on birth control (desogen mostly) since I was about 14/15 years old and I am mid-20 now. My doctors have put me on lovenox and told me to wait. Wait? Wait for what? Please help..if you have any new information or could recommned a specialist.

A close friend of mine went into the hospital with a staph infection (MRSA) on Saturday. She has been transferred to another hospital because she now has a blood clot in her abdomen. I don't know exactly where in her abdomen, so far that's all I know. She recently had gastric bypass surgery (On Christmas Day). I am wondering if that may be a cause of it? Anybody know anything??

Please if someone knows what to do about someone who has bloodclot in their stomach and suffered for days, what was the solution, my relative been in pain for 10 days in hospital now she can barely urinate or bowel movement, the inexperience drs want to do a catherization, theses drs say they've never experience this before,the blood clots in abs, Yes birthcontrol was the cause named loestrim or something close to that ..do anyone know what we should do HELPHELPHELP

I am 62 and I was recently hospitalized for a blood clot in the intestines. They tell me that it is quite rare to have a blood clot in this area. I have been on hormone replacement therapy for roughly 20 years and they are directly attributing my blood clot to this long-term use of HRT. I was lucky, in that I was diagnosed very quickly and managed to avoid surgery, although I did spend about 11 days in hospital. I am now on Warfarin and get my blood drawn every few days. I had a 3rd CT scan of the abdomen today and I am hoping that the clot has either gone or has severely thinned down. I am anxious to get the results of this scan. I consider myself very lucky to have come through this so well. My symptoms were: off my food for about a month and when I did eat, I couldn't consume very much, maybe just a couple of tablespoons. I then had severe abdominal pain and actually attended the Emerg Dept of our local hospital, was sent home, and then had to go back in again during the night. You should really listen to your body and if things are not right, make sure you get help quickly and don't take no for an answer.

my relative is having the same problem, blood clot in the intestine, did you go thru any surgery to remove the clot or they gave the medice for that? can u pls elaborate the procedure. would be helpful...thanks

I had and still do have two blood clots in my inferior vena cava. The clots were so large they had blocked my vena cava off 100%. One was the size of a plum and the other the size of a golf ball. I now have collateral veins that have made there way back up to my heart. The doctors said it was very uncommon. I am 25 now and I've been on coumadin for 3 years now. I function just fine and work my 40 hours a week where I am constantly moving and walking.
