I am on low dose COREG for Premature Ventricular Contractions ( skipped beats) which occur constantly. I have heard of serious side effects from this drug. Weight gain- which can be substancial. I am not sure if it's from water wgt. or food consumed. I have also been very tired which strangely occurs many hours after my last daily dose. Can anyone advise me on their side effect experiences AND the weight gain? Thanks so much!

I also am on a low dose and have been having light-headiness and general malaise ie loss of appetite and abdominal problems. I have had no weight gain issues while on it.

I have been on 3.125 Coreg and Diovan for about a year to treat hypertension. I gained about 10 pounds, while dieting,in the first 6 months. I begain a serious exercise program and Weight-watchers diet in early January. I feel better, but have gained another 6 pounds eating 1500 calories a day, and working out at leats 4 hours per week.
One thing I have noticed while working out with friends is my heart rate. I go hard and cannot get my heart rate up to the target rate for exercise. My workout partners do the same workout, and their heartbeat goes to 140+. I can bearly get to 110!.Also my leg muscles get very tight and I have to take many breaks...not because I'm out of breath, but because my legs just give out!
I was about 40 pounds overweight when I was hospitalized with hypertention. My doctor put me on a diet and recommended exercise. With my diet, exercise and medication, I am now over 60 pounds overweight!! But....my blood pressure is under control!?(And my cholestral is better.)
It is ironic that I am "healthier" according to blood tests, but more obese.
Makes you wonder.

I am on 25mg of Coreg twice a day. I have a mild cardiomyopathy. I get very tired about 2 hours after taking a dose of Coreg. Since I have been increased to the present dosage I have gained 5 pounds. I work out at a gym 4 to 5 times and week and I am careful about what I eat. I am sure that my weight gain is from the drug. Anyone else have this problem?

I'm a 51 yr old male taking 6.25mg twice a day. I been frequently lightheaded and can't think clearly. I've also had bouts of unexpected mild nausea. I thought I was going crazy until I finally researched the side effects of this drug. I wish I would have done this before I started taking it 2 mos. ago. I put a call into my doctor today to advise I've stopped taking it. I almost passed out at the bank yesterday. Weight is not a problem for me and except for maybe a couple of pounds, no gain to speak of.

I am 54, I light cardiomyopathy which was discovered accidently with no symthoms (before the coreg), I am now on 6.25 mg coreg twice a day + ACE inhibator (enalapril 10mgX2). Since I have started Coreg my heat beat became slower, sometimes 35 bps, I exercise daily, from 135-140 bps at peak exercise i went down to 110-120 and this is after 1 hour of walking/sweimming. The first 1/2 hour of the exercise is a nightmare, i feel heavy, pains, like an old man, after 30 minutes my heart is catching up and I feel like I felt before I had started Coreg. Sometimes I can hardly walk after taking the drug and have pains in my chest, all I believe are side effects. The doctor says that I do not have heart failure so I can only assume that this is really the drug. One year asgo, before starting the drug I was 100% okay. And YET, my heart volumes became smaller this year which is good, from the researches I read I know that this is an excellent drug for my condition so I struggle to stay on , but many times, especially when i feel bad, I ask myself if I should stop it: maybe I will have shorter life but at least thier quality will be better. I don't know. time will tell. Other side effects: I also gain some weight but this is really minor, in the first few months I was dizzy but this was over thanks god. Avner

Hello Vicki
I am taking Coreg for a low ejection fraction and have gained 1.5# per month for the past 15 months. I also have ventricular tachycardia and PVC's. Drug did not help. I have been on a near Atkins diet for about 10 years. I read somewhere that the preferred fuel for the heart is glycogen which only comes from carbohydrates. I switched to a high carb diet eating mostly whole grain pasta, fruits, vegetables, Kashi with fruit, bananas or Papa Giki Heart Healthy Cookies for snacks.

My glycogen levels are definitely up and my weight has stabilized. I do not get hungry on this diet as blood sugars are stabilized. The best part though is my ventricular tachycardia stopped and it stopped completely. I will find out for sure next time I have my ICD read. My pvc's also declined dramatically. Try taking a multiple mineral with zinc and magnesium. That will help reduce PVC's. Also watch your stress. Adrenaline and cortisol also cause arrhythmias.

BTW, my ejection fraction is the same as 15 months ago. I cut the drug in half and feel much better. I will be asking my cardiologist to sort thru other options.

Hope that helps.
Jim

Help needed. My PVC's have been so bad that i was jumping out of my skin. Was taking 3.125mg and had to add one more dose- taking 2 in the morning. Started today and felt so calm but light headed. Plus I'm gonna gain weight.By night it's so bad again. Snapping at everyone and very intense. I just read all the posts and side effects. I cant seem to deal w/o this drug and freaking that I have no control over the symptoms. Very concerned. Can anyone offer anything up? The quality of my life at 54 is starting to stink, BIG time.

I am 53 and have Non-Ischemic Cardiomyopathy, with a left bundle branch block and mitral valve prolapse. I was diagnosed March 2006 and put on Coreg and Spironolactone. I am up to 12.5mg twice a day on the Coreg. I am lightheaded a lot and very weak throughout the day. I work out 5 days a week on my treadmill and lost 20 pounds in the beginning. After my doses increased to 12.5 twice a day, I gained 10 pounds back. I eat fruit, vegetables, beans and very little if any meat. My cholesterol and trigly. are high and were low before these medications. I asked my pharmacist and looked online and found out my medications raise cholesterol levels! Now they want me to take cholesterol meds to control a problem caused by other medications. I already feel so tired, weak and dizzy and don't want to take cholesterol medications that cause body aches! I want to live, but I am so miserable a lot of the time. Has anyone else felt life this?

I have been taking 25mg of corege once a day (in the a.m.) for a bout 2 months. I feel fine and it's been controlling my mild palpatations and high bP, however, I've put on about 7 lbs!!!! When I realized that I have done nothing different except for taking COREG, I decided to check to see if weight gain is a side effect. I'm learning that it is. I am 100% convinced that the medication has caused the weight gain.

I'm going on a strict diet of 1,200 calories a day and back to my exercising regime of 5 X per week (cardio and weights)to see if the weight comes off. I typically have a history of being able to lose 1lb -1.5lbs per week when I get healthy. I'm only 39. I go back to Dr. on 9/26.
I will not stay on the medication if the weight does not come off.
Geez!

Age 44...Gaining so much weight on Coreg. 10 lbs in 8 weeks and I work out every day and eat 1300 calories...I'm 5 ft 10 inches and normally weigh 150 lbs and I've noticed that my waist has grown like 3 inches... I've never had any problems but my doctor put me on 20 mg of Coreg and an ACE inhibitor 2 months ago as my ejection factor was 40%- My twin sister had some chest pains and problems with her chest so I just wanted to get checked out...they said virus or hereditary...I've never even had chest pains or any problems until I took medication. I want to go off of it as I'm so sleepy and sometimes suffer from depression and lack of energy - especially when I do the treadmill. I'm used to walking 4 miles a day pluse some handweights and felt totally fine before doctor put me on drugs. I have perfect cholesterol, no blockages or anything...Has anyone gone off of medicine with success? Any other twins out there? Do you know if eating disorders from the past cause heart problems? Would love feedback as now I feel like an old lady and before I took Coreg I felt fine!

Coreg is a beta blocker. It's designed to slow your heart rate. This is why you can't get your heart rate up when exercising. You must be careful not to overstress your heart while exercising and pace yourself instead.

I have been on 25 mg (many more times your dose) for 4.5 years. Believe it or not you get used to it. Your body will adapt.

I've been on coreg a little while
at first I was real tired but now I have
good stamina.
I also have gained weight and can't seem
to drop the extra pounds.
I have triple bypass and a pasemaker.
All and all I think coreg has worked for me
so far so good, but I'll probably try something
else someday,I also developed heart failure-coreg
caused I'm not sure!!!!
