My dentist prescribed Clindamycinafter two root canals. I finished taking the prescribation but soon after I started with the bloating, 10-15 bowl movements daily, vomiting, rectal bleeding. I went to see my primary doctor and she sent me to get a colonoscopy. The Gastrologist sent me for blood work and fecal matter testing which revealed that I had c-difficile...the colonoscopy revealed I had diverticulitis - all as a result of taking Clindamhycin. Why is this drug on the market if it is so dangerous? I will never take it again.

I'm 6 days into this. 300MG 3x a day for 10 days for a skin infection. My doctor advised me to take some form of probiotic after taking a dose since clindamycin WILL wipe out my good bacteria. I eat some yogurt or take acidophilus shortly after a dose.

Diarrhea hasn't been that bad; referring to the Bristol Stool Scale, stools have been consistently Type 4-5, worst was Type 6 when I first started taking this. It hasn't been severe for me at all; I've probably gone to the bathroom at most, 5 times in a day. Other days are typically 3-4 times a day. Bloating was also a minor side effect.

Another symptom I had was heartburn; I had this only once so far after a dose. It was pretty bad, but I attribute it to me laying down for a while shortly after taking clindamycin.

Worked great for my skin infection; its pretty much gone now, but I will finish with the clindamycin.

I have taken clindamycin for years for pre-med before dental appointments. Then last winter I had a root canal and was given a ten day course of it. About three weeks later I ended up in the ER needing blood transfusions. I stopped using my ibuprofen and started iron and got my blood counts back to normal. Also had upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, small bowel follow through, and a pill cam which discovered small bowel ulcers. I'm having a double balloon endoscopy next week to find out why I have small bowel ulcers. I had a dental cleaning and exam two weeks ago and a day later started having bloody stools again and my blood counts dropped. The only common factor seems to be clindamycin.?? I have never had ulcers or anemia before last winter. Has anyone heard of this? Is it a coincidence?

I was given this medicine after oral surgery. I was 17 years old. less then a week i had EXTREME pain in my tummy with loose, bloody stool. I had c-diff because of the medicine. I went from 115lbs to 89lbs. couldn't eat or live a normal life. Was given Vancomycin twice! to get rid of it. THEY NEED TO STOP MAKING THIS DRUG!!!! As a permanent side effect I now have IBS which i will have forever! imagine hearing that at 17=(

We all must keep in mind that everyone's body reacts differently to medications. Clindamycin is one of a few antibiotics that I can take because I have so many drug allergies. I have never suffered from the side effects that it can cause. However, I also always make sure that when I am supposed to take it I also eat yogurt or cottage cheese. I eat this because your body already has safe levels of bacteria in it (it's part of how we break down food) and the clindamycin killing the bacteria in you body even that which is not part of your infection. The bacteria needs to be replace and eating foods like this is normally a good option.

I'm not saying that those of you who have had horrible experiences shouldn't take it. I'm just saying that just because you had a bad experience that doesn't mean everyone will.

Also remember that it is never safe to stop taking any medication without talking to your doctor first. Quitting and antibiotic before you are supposed increases the chance of making the infection worse.

All doctors should advise Diarrhea is the main side effect. My doctor told me this before we even considered me taking it thought what i take it for it is worth the risk. He said 1-3 loose stool a day is normal. Severe diarrhea with stomach cramping is when it needs to be stopped and you switched to something else, because it can cause a colon infection while it is not common. Clindamycin like all other drugs effect different people differently. Not everyones body can tolerate meds the same. Something that may help is taking acidophilus. it is a probiotic that helps put the good bacteria back in your stomach that antibitoics kill. eating yogurt can also help that.

American doctors suck. They are pimps for the drug companies. US health care is the leading cause of death and injury.

different people respond to medicines in different ways. this does not mean the drug is ineffective or overall unsafe. i took a course of clindamycin for dental infection and it saved my life. it works well for dental infection. there are some antibiotics that do make me very sick but i'm grateful clindamycin wasn't one of them.
(no, i don't work for a big pharma but i did have a life threatening infection and needed serious antibiotic therapy.)

My dentist prescribed Clindamycin for my abcessed tooth. After only 2 days (4 caps per day) I developed bruises on my feet and legs, severe tiredness and weakness, mild stomach turmoil, dizziness, confusion, horrible taste and smell in my mouth, and depression very unlike me. I weigh 99 pounds. I think 4 per day was an overdose for me, for starters, and now that I am off this awful drug I am starting to improve. No new bruises, and the stomach and smell symptoms are improving. Still very fatigued and depressed.

I have a tooth that has been giving me some issues. Went to a dentist here in south Florida. Told me I had a bacterial infection around where the damaged tooth is. He put me on this crap...CLINDAMYCIN. The very first day I developed diahrea. No matter what I ate, it turned instantly into pure water comming out of my ***. After four days on this garbage, I decided to STOP taking it. The side effects I felt are as follows: At night while sleeping ( half awake ) difficulty is proper breathing ( as if I was not intaking enough oxygen ) Loss of taste while eating. Some cramping in lower gut area. Constant bathroom visits ( aprox. 10-15 times daily ) and the most painful ( and scary ) was...My RECTUM hurt like all He**!! I actually had to lie down being it was so painful and the fact, I began to sweat quite
a bit. I was freeking out. PEOPLE, PLEASE-PLEASE
don't take this crap....I would not want you to end up feeling such as do and probably will for days or weeks to come.

Pure salt hydrochloride ! Gave this to ly dog for a week; moaning groaning very bad; am now giving him active cultured yogurt everyday indefinitely!!!! It took nine years of good bacteria that was naturally being made in his intestines -our of him! He is also drinking more ; This drug is potent enough after one two days your own white blood cells can take over ; the manufacturer even states this in their statements!!!!!!Will never again take or give this for such duration! Vet actually wanted me to continue meds for the rest of the script!!!! Makes me sick ; and it made my dog sick!

I just started taking Clindamycin about 4 hours ago I have a 10 day prescription of 2 300mg capsules every 6 hours. 45 minutes after taking my first dose I had sudden gut gurgles followed by diarrhea. 4 hours later while folding laundry I got a sudden nasty bitter/metallic taste in my mouth. I thought I just needed to brush my teeth again but it came right back. After doing some more reading I believe this to be a side effect of the medication. My tooth is scheduled to get a root canal in about a month and I don't want to have to take this nasty stuff BUT... I have already taken amoxicillin and just want this infection to clear up so they do not delay my root canal appointment. grrrr!!!!! the diarrhea is not as annoying to me as the nasty taste in my mouth!

Thank you everyone for posting your experiences. I was just prescribed Clindmycine by my periodontist and nearly started to take it - its 150 mg, 3 times a day for 10 days! Previously I have had severe reactions to Erythromycine, with symptoms like the ones described for Clinda, especially the breathing and colitis type. WOW!
