Eleven years ago, I took Cipro and Vicodin for an infection and these were safe back then. A modest level of discretion is on the recipient. Proper use of these pharmaceuticals will ensure quality benefit. The FDA is recalling certain medicines due to some manufacturing issues, possibly some lax oversight within certain companies.

I used CIPRO, Levaquin and Tequin frequently for sinus infections when I was in my 30s. I also developed tendinitis in both elbows and rotator cuff, around the same time. I wound up having surgery on one of my elbows to repair my tendon.

This was between 5 and 10 years ago and at the time my orthopedic surgeon told me to NEVER, EVER take one of these meds again. Very sound advice.

Since then, I've refused them every time someone tried to give me them. BTW, most other doctors don't know about this, I had to tell a GYN and an internist. They thought I was a bit wacky, but I was right!

I've taken Levaquin 5 times and had severe reactions
that put me in the hospital, made me miss work,
required ten of thousands of dollars of medical
visits--scans-- tests--etc.. I saw all these top doctors
that could not figure it out. The last time I took Levaquin
I finally figured it out. All my symptoms came rolling back in. This drug has essentially robbed me of 9 months of my life; it should be banned. This is a step in the right direction. And the doctors also thought I was wacky---well off to one more specialist to figure if I have lasting damage.

Me too! Levaquin made my brain swell. I also had double vision and dizziness within an hour of taking it. It can have some serious CNS side effects...very scary stuff!!! if my choice was to take Levaquin again or die, I would definitely choose the latter!!!

I would guess that more research is needed to determine the veracity of each given medicine on an ailment. Cipro used to be effective and safe for most infections. I was treated with Cipro for an infection and it worked well for me.

I don't think that CIPRO was ever "safe". It is just that the FDA didn't know about its side effects. There was a story on the Channel 4 website about this, recently. The FDA really doesn't worry too much about monitoring side effects.

Also, the frequency with which you use drugs is important. Prior to my sinus surgery I was getting six or so sinus infections a year, so I was on it a lot. Anyway, I got the sinus surgery in 2006 and now I get maybe one sinus infection a year.

Anyway, I'm 43 now and feel so much better than I ever have. However, I'll never touch this family of antibiotics ever again.
