Patty,

Check out the drug interactions between the citalopram and the citalopram e.g. try drugs.com for an interaction checker, or from drugdigest.org ...

"CITALOPRAM may interact with TRAZODONE

Both citalopram and trazodone have an effect on serotonin, a chemical that is found in the brain. Excess levels of serotonin in the brain may cause serious or potentially life-threatening side effects. Early signs of this problem include increased confusion and restlessness. Other possible symptoms may include weakness, fever, nausea, and anxiety. In rare cases, high levels of serotonin in the brain may cause severe complications like seizures, stroke, and even death. If citalopram and trazodone are used together, it may be best to start with very low doses of each drug under the careful supervision of your doctor. Ask your healthcare provider about these drugs and this potential interaction as soon as possible.

This interaction is poorly documented and is considered major in severity."

Paragraph concerning SSRI/trazodone prescription in lower part of this article:

http://www.blackwell-synergy.com/links/doi/10...

If you read through the drug leaflets for each drug separately (either through your leaflets that came with the drugs, or via the on-line leaflets at somewhere like drugs.com ) you will be able to check out the individual adverse effects each may produce. The combination warning relates to serotonin syndrome.

Trazodone is effective in the treatment of antidepressant-associated insomnia:
http://www.emedexpert.com/facts/trazodone-fac...

It is very common practice to prescribe two antidepressants form different classes (e.g. SSRI+ trazodone, SSRI+ Wellbutrin).

However, the more drugs you take, the more the risk of side effects you get. There are many other non-drug approaches to treat insomnia.

Here is some info:

Trazodone is popularly prescribed off-label for insomnia; and in the USA it is very common practice to combine antidepressants from two different classes.

However, summary literature appears neutral with regard to trazodone's 'insomnia' use - with the disparity between the level of prescription vs efficacy usually commented upon.

http://psychservices.psychiatryonline.org/cgi...

Many of the non-drug approaches to insomnia will prove to be of greater benefit than a pharmaceutical approach, however some of these are also listed as having major interactions with SSRI antidepressants e.g. tryptophan, St John's Wort - so it's always best to check thoroughly beforehand.

Hi, I am starting on Trazodone for severe anxiety and also panic attacks which have come on suddenly very strongly and consistently.
I have had severe pain and take opioids and other meds. for FMS.
I wake up in the morning and very soon begin with the anxiety; unbearable if I don't get out of bed and get busy. With the days being shorter in the winter my anxiety is increasing toward panic each day hours before becoming dark outside. I don’t understand why; I am not afraid of the dark.
My doctor prescribed Trazodone 100mg at bedtime. Since I am sensitive to SSRI’s and other antidepressants, I am taking half the dose, 50mg. I don’t feel well in the morning, have dry mouth and don’t feel mentally well till late afternoon. I think I am more depressed, but I am trying to ride out the side effects hoping for an improvement in a few weeks. It is helping with insomnia which has been chronic for two years. I only get up twice or so to urinate. As compared to waking every hour or three, or not sleeping at all lying awake all night.
Is anyone else having similar symptoms and having success with medication for severe pain depression? Anyone with FMS? Thanks for reading.

I have had sleeping prob, since I was in middle school and I am now 24 and just started talking to a dr for the prob. Also i have started a antidepressant called celexa and wanted to know if i could take it in the morning and the traz.at night. if any one knows, let me know . thank you much.

I have been off Celexa for about a year, but I used it with Trazadone when I was being treated.

I found that taking my 20mg Celexa in the morning and the Trazadone about 1/2 hour before bed worked well for me. The only downside to the Trazadone is it gave me a fuzzy head the next morning.

Hi
In regard to the seroquel question, I am not sure I have never taken seroquel, however due to shift work have played with many sleepers taken ambien you name it all of them and in my experience those narcotics youer receptors build a tolerence and then you want more and it does not work.I think youer best bet is trazadone it dose not interfere with GABA in the brain and is said to be safer then Elavil, you can go to a pretty high dosage to see what works for you, however some people it does not work for then you might consider elavil another old school med used for the treatment of insomnia.I have had great luck with these meds so far and only swithced to trazadone because it is a little more calming then elavil.

Hi there,

Theres no need to worry,i take 40mg of citalopram (the english term for this drug) and 100mg of trazadone a night. It does sound very dounting and off putting, at first you may have a few side effects as well with all new medication, like tiredness but nothing serious. This medication has obiously been prescribed to you caus you need it and it will help you, my experience with taking these two medication together is that all it did was help me and change my mood for the much better! Both tablets with stop you from worrying as they are used to treat anxiety, as well as depresison, even if you arnt being treated for anxiety, so if you are worrying about taking these tablets, once they start working probably in a week- 2 weeks you wil see how much you like them and how better you feel!
Hope this helps and sets your mind at ease! Good luck :)

She takes both at night and she complains she is completely exhausted when she gets home from work and sleeps for 2 hrs. eats dinner and then usually in bed by 10.. Her doctor has told her to take the trazodone every night.. I just think with celexa suppose to help with well being and energy level shouldn't she be taking celexa first thing in th morning?

Yes; I just started taking trazodone for sleep. It has been a week now and my doctor suggested that I up the dosage as it was not working (it worked fore about 5 days and then stoped). When I increased the dosage I felt wired and experiencd excessive anxiety. It was terrible. I did not sleep well at all last night even after the increase. Does anyone have any suggestions? Should I keep taking it? Will it eventually start working? Will the wired feeling go away?

well now i have taken out the trazadone and i take ambien now has anyone else taking ambien
I first started taking ambien and celexa. The 5mg didn't work so I started taking two 5 mg which worked for a while. My dr suggested trazadone as it was not as addictive as ambien. I have since upped my ambien and trezadone also perscribed by a Navy Dr.... not in the Navy Civilian overseas :)

Question do you take both citalopram and trazadone at night? can you take both at night? I just started them yesterday. Does it help with the side effects from the Citalopram if you take them at night??

Have a look at the following website that talks about Trazodone:
http://www.mentalhealth.com/drug/p30-d03.html
It says the usual dose for Trazodone is 150-200 mg/day. Some patients even take 600 mg/day! I'm taking only Celexa, but I know the usual starting dose is 20 mg/day with 40 mg/day being not uncommon.
So it looks like your doctor has given you half the usual daily dose of Trazodone and half a dose of Celexa which both together make up a full dose of anti-depressant.
If these two meds had negative interactions I don't think your doctor would have you on both, but what he might do is see if the Trazodone works better for you, and then give you the full 150 mg and tell you to stop the Celexa? Just a thought.
I have recently been put on 10mgCelexa and 1mg Klonopin. I cannot sleep with the Celexa at all. I am jittery during the day. I was wondering if I could take trazodone at night.

I have depression/anxiety and mild insomnia. I have been taking 10mg of Celexa and they tried trazadone, remrol and now I'm on 10mg of Ambien with 20mg of Celexa. Has anyone else tried this combo before? And how did you react to the Ambien? I've heard both posotive and negative things about it and am a little nervous about taking it...

I took Paxil for nearly 15 years and I have been off it for about 2 months and man my brain isn't fogged up anymore. It worked well for at least 5 - 7 years. I feel that I lost 8 - 10 years of my life.
Good luck and thanks everybody for your the helpful information you are sharing.

I am currently taking citalopram 20mg during the day, and 25-50mg of trazodone at night...but the trazodone doesn't really seem to work much for sleep (which is all I've needed it for). Does anyone know if I could take temazepam instead of the trazodone at night?

I have been taking 50mg of Trazodone for about a year for insomnia. On 1 October, my doctor prescribed Celexa. At first, I was only nauseous and sleepy, so I was fine for most of the week. Then, on 8 October, I attempted suicide... Although I have PTSD (my therapist assigned me to research BPD... dont know what for, though), this was entirely out of my character.

My depression went totally out of control over the course of only two days. I never imagined anyone could feel so terrible - it blew my mind! My typical fear of loneliness turned into absolutes - that I'd always be alone and that I could never have a relationship with anyone, amongst other horrible thoughts. Without any regard to my pets, or any loose ends whatsoever, I took around 35-40 sleeping pills and OD'd. It was terrible, and I remember being at the hospital and, while my mind still functioned, wondering why I had done that, and I was afraid that I had ruined myself. As soon as I was off the Celexa, I felt far better.

Now, however, they have put me on Zoloft. I've been on it since the 10th and I feel fine, far more active than normal. I'm wary of taking other SSRIs though. Does anyone know if maybe it was the Celexa acting badly with the Trazodone? Or was it just that I had adverse reactions to the Celexa? Should I avoid other SSRI's, i.e. get off the Zoloft?

I am in desperate need of help, as my military career is greatly threatened by this incident. Any information regarding Celexa and suicide would be deeply appreciated. Thank you to any who can help me.

Hi. I suffer from insomnia and mild depression. I have therefore been prescribed trazodone at night (75mg) to sleep and celexa 10mg in the morning to treat the depression.
I've never taken anti depressants ever, and to start taking two types at once, terrifies me!
Anyone taking two types at once before? Is it safe?
Any advise appreciated, I am very nervous about starting to take these pills.
I have been taking 50mg trazodone and 40mg celexa for the past month. My depression is getting better slowly and the trazodone is great for insomnia. The side effects for me are dizziness and headache in the morning. And if you're taking trazodone, make sure you have enough hours to sleep, I wouldn't take this unless I had 8 hrs sleep ahead of me.
