Avodart Side Effects

My urologist put me on Avodart about 1 month ago. So far no effects. He said that my risk of surgery would decline from 30% to 15% as the prostrate [ benign ] would halve in size. It is huge, the size of a large grape fruit. You can stop after a year and the prostrate will start to grow again. In other words the side effects are reversible.
If you go on Flomax, it has an effect on the eyes which is not reversible. The effect is called floppy iris and makes cataract surgery much more difficult to perform. Be warned. I found this out when I went with my wife to get her cataracts fixed and the name Flomax was on the surgeons do you use sheet. He explained the effect and it is irreversible. My GP had suggested Flomax but I did not use it. Thank goodness

There must be a large number of people not experiencing problems but I guess they would have not had reason to post. It is concerning to see so many negative side affects.

Well it's been two months. Flow is much better but still getting up a couple of times a night. Urgency has decreased a lot. No seamen anymore and libido decreased a little bit. All in all seems to be working and plan on staying with it for 6 months at least.

Iam 66, and I had surgery for bladder cancer about 18 months ago. Also diagnosed with BPH. Cancer is completely gone, so far.

My uroligist prescribed Flomax and Avodart for six months then just Avodart (last nine months). About six months ago I started having stomach/groin/abdominal pains and my GP diagnosed Irritable Bowel Syndrome: but I don't think that was correct. About 1 and 1/2 months ago The pain moved to my to my left kidney (back)area then spread to both sides of my back and left side of abdomen. It was getting worse by the day.

I called my Urologist and one week ago today, stopped taking the Avodart. The pains went away almost immediately and (this is not a joke) woke up this morning with an erection for the first time in more than a year.

I have to call my urologist on Monday and I'm not sure what I'll do if he tells me to go back on the Avodart. Any suggestions or ideas?

Well, it's been 4 months since i stopped taking Advodart.Man does it feel good to be back to normal. No more aches and pains, urine flow much much better. Erections are back to normal and I feel GREAT !!! My Doctor told me he wouldn't put me back on them and I wouldn't do it anyway. I cannot beleive how much better I fell. Also my taste for good food and Beer came back and no more having a metal taste in my mouth.
For all of you men who are in pain and cannot sleep, no erections i am telling you to STOP taking Advodart. Good Luck

I stopped eight days ago and also feel so much better. That bloated feeling is gone, along with the pains and I notice my bowel movements even feel more normal.

My urologist wants me to go back on the Avodart to see if those symptoms reappear, to make sure it was the cause. I feel so good, I hate to go back on it and afraid it could do permanent damage to my kidneys or some other organ.

Not sure what I'm going to do..........

I am taking both Avodart and Flomax together for one month, and now I have a dry ejaculation.I am 69 years old, and I am sexually active with my wife. I had taken Flomax in the past, and never had a problem.

been on avodart for about a week now----noticed a stinging in the penis, especially after sex. also on flomax and androgel---Unfortunately my wife < within an hour also has a burning or stinging in her vagina> anyone el.lse have any problems similar

Started taking Avodart two weeks ago. One week after taking Avodart I started to have tightness in my chest, diffuculty breathing. Can't walk across the room without feeling like I am going to fall over. Woke my wife up at 3am this morning the tightness in the chest would not go away. She got on the internet and found drug reactions to include dizzieness and shortness of breath. I am stopping the Avodart today 11/14/09, we will see if the problem goes away. Will post a report in a couple of days

I have been taking Finastreride 5mg for serveral years.I have some side effects such as dizziness, light head aches at times. I tryed Flomax for two weeks and had to go off of it. To many side effects.I do see the Doctor Thursday and see what he has to say.I have had a enlarged prostate for 20 years are more. I pass urine very slowly most of the time, but not always. When I did take the Flomax I did pass urine very rapidly, but to many side effects.

I was on Avodart for 3 months...some side effects, not too bad, but it did not help. I stopped recently, went for tests this week. On Hytrin and Ditropan...sometimes it worms, sometimes it doesn't. Had this problem for at least 40 years, Have another appt with urologist Thursday, want to avoid surgery.

I have been taking Avadart for over a month now. I have been on Flomax for about 3 months before taking Avodart. I've been having severe joint pains in my knees going down to my ankels for about a week to the point that I could hardly go up our stairs. I stopped taking Avadart and in two days The joint pain is dissapering and I find I'm gaining my strength back in my knees. I did have light shoulder pain also after taking Avadart.

After reading all the complaints on this Forum I came to the conclusion that all medication effects people differently. Your doctor should be aware of your own experiance though. Surgery for most of us is probably the best. The Lazer procedure sound promising. I certainly will ask My Doctor about that procedure.

My doctor today suggested something called "button vaporization," which he said was an out-patient procedure of a laser to "hollow out" the enlarged prostate. Anyone familiar with it and its results?
