Took avodart for frequent urination due to enlarged prostate. Seemed to work, but also ended up on Levitra due to decreased sex drive and Selaxin for lower back pain. Through in depression and I got disgusted with the whole thing. Back to peeing when I want to. The hell with Avodart, it aint worth it.

Thanks James for your comments...I was going to ask my Doctor about the drug, but have decided against.

I wouldn’t make any decision about Avodart based on one person’s experience. The people who don’t have side effects probably have no reason to look at this forum. The people with issues are most likely to be the ones posting here.
I have been taking Avodart for a little over three months. My prostate has been shrinking and my urinary flow is improving. And I am getting noticeable hair growth on my head. It seems like a miracle drug to me. I am concerned as to whether or not I will have any long term side effects, but so far, so good. |

The internet is not a proper place to have this sort of important kind of discussion. You are essentially communicating with total strangers. That's not a REAL discussion. How do you know that people are telling the truth about their experience on any particular drug or not? Anyone can write whatever they want just to pull a prank. You have to be careful about what you are reading in a non-regulated forum. This is just simple common sense don't you think? There are a lot of dishonest people on the web, that's all. A one on one with a health care professional is going to give you much more reliable information. If your Doctor doesn't help you then a real website will do much more for you than a chat room full of speculation and here say.
This is too serious a subject to rely on the advice of people that you have no idea who they are. |

Why do you keep posting the same crap over and over “Anonymous in Mill Valley, CA”? You made your point once and now you seem intent on trashing this board by cutting and pasting your same comments over and over.
I have looked at other medical websites. They pretty much have the same information. I like this site so I can read about others experiences, not to be lectured with irrelevant information by someone like you. |
||||
Eddie from the United States, I am posting because I am trying to help people who might be getting false information. I would hate for someone to not take a medication that they need just because someone made up a side effect that they did not have. I haven't lectured anyone, but you certainly have. For some reason I have made you extremely angry. I apologize. I think that perhaps you have taken my posts a little bit too personal. I'm only trying to help. Take care! |

Eddie from Atlanta GA,
You say that you like this site because, "I can read about others experiences." That's my point. How do you know that people are telling their real experiences? How do you know whether or not they are making stuff up? Do you really trust everything you read on the web? Look at all of the trouble that has gone on with websites like My Space. People lie all of the time about themselves on the web. Come on, you're smart enough to know that. I don't trust the internet and I certainly don't trust anyone on it. But, to make you far less angry and upset I will not post on this forum again. I won't be returning here either, so now you can do what you accused me of doing to this forum. Instead of trashing the forum, you can trash me! Have fun! So much for free speech. I have been properly put in my place by Eddie from Atlanta, GA. |

Eddie from Atlanta GA,
Sorry, I lied.(See how you can't trust anyone on the net?) I just have one more post for you. Below is a paragraph from an article on health information on the web. Maybe you will believe this. "Health information is perhaps among the most troublesome of all information on the Web. Teenagers and the elderly are most susceptible to misinformation in this area, and more and more seniors are getting online, capitalizing on what they see as a plethora of health information, particularly with regard to drugs, disease symptoms, cures, alternatives, etc. The Web site Senior Focus Radio [http://www.seniorfocusradio.c om.cancerinformation.html] recently ran an article claiming that a recent survey of seniors indicated “their biggest concern about cancer information on the Internet was misinformation.” An example of such misinformation is a site [http://www.ioa.com/~dragonfly /news/kelley.html] that claims at the top of its page,“There is no cure for the common cold. There is a very simple CURE for cancer.” A number of sites like this can be retrieved by anyone searching “cancer and cure” or “cure for cancer” on an Internet search engine. And while some highly respectable and authoritative medical Web sites have emerged, medical misinformation is more accessible today than ever before." Does that help you to understand how the internet really works? |

kirt, I have now been taking Avodart for six months. When I first started taking it, I had a noticeable decrease in my sex drive. It was my understanding that this was a temporary side effect that would eventually go away, so I was not overly concerned. My enlarged prostate was going to cause sex problems anyway, so I really had no choice in this matter.
It took four months before I had a slight increase in my sex drive. And now after six months, my libido is close to returning to what it was before I stated taking Avodart. The odd thing was that my libido did not slowly increase over this timeframe. It stayed on a plateau for months and then overnight almost at once, it took a big step increase. |

Eddie,
I am with you. People visiting this site are looking for, and sharing of, information. Most of the comments I have read are all similiar in nature and reflected in published side effects. One other quesiton, I have read experience of hair regrowth, how about change in color ? ie white hair to 'grayish". Keep up the good work |

I have been on this medication now for over 14 months.I am 85 years old. My PSA has gone down from 8.5 to 4.0 I am not finding that I urinate much better than before..I find my stream is very weak without much force. I have had an operation in 1989 called TURP. I was in hospital for 3 weeks. I had a lot of blood loss. I guess the old prostate has started growing back again, my Urologist wants to do it over again, but at my age I am doing everything to prevent that. He started me on Advodart, it has helped but not as much as I hope it would. I will be seeing him again in a week or so, I would like to try another method,I had far too much blood loss the first time. I am, as mentioned before, 85 years old, how many more years have I got left?

Harry, laser surgery to correct your problem might be what you are looking for as it is minimally invasive. The catch is that most urologists do not have the training and equipment to do this procedure with lasers.
Typically only a few urologists in large cities can do the prostate laser surgery, so you will have to find the one nearest to you with this equipment. |
||||
Michael Massachusetts, I have not experienced any change in hair color with my hair regrowth. It matches my existing hair perfectly. But that’s just me. |

Thanks Eddie for the information re-laser surgery, I wonder if there are any urologists in London, Ont. which can perform it? I am only about hour or so from London. Do you have any idea how can I find this out? Thanks. Harry |

Have been taking Avodart for two years now. Libido has decreased and not come back, and more disturbingly, I have suffered oligospermia (very little sperm) as well as difficulty ejaculating. Stopped for a while, but that sent my PSA rate soaring within days and meant back to the old urinary trouble. But worse, it's beginning to interfere with our marital life.

I took Avodart for a while and heck it worked for me. I ended up a with a huge package and lots of girl friends. I have to shave twice a day and I now have a hair line like wolfman. Besides that I can rinse the bird crap off my car taking a piss. Life is good.
