my heart beat has dropped 25 beats per minute since starting atenolol, 8 months ago. i just turned 80......and after 79 years of a pulse of 80, at the lower count, my system seems to drag. i walked an hour a day before atenolol. now, 20 minutes, thee times a week is all i can do. headaches, bad leg pain, gastro troubles, light-headedness, malaise and lethargy...all after beginning ths beta blocker. yes, of course , i have spoke with the medicos.....i am down to 12.5 mg. daily, and still feel lousy. to you younger folks....no, you do not have to feel old at age 80. so, i hate this pill.

Jim wrote: Any sexual side effects with women taking atenolol? don't know when this was written. you can contact me at palabrasymas@hotmail.com -- just a midlife woman out there; think I'm having side effects from Atenolol in form of difficulty reaching orgasm. why did you post? It can apparently cause this, so I'm cutting back; I take it for rapid heartbeat but am working out, losing weight, and may not need the dose I've been on. antidepressants etc. can also make someone less orgasmic...

27 years old here, started taking atenolol 1 week ago for abnormal racing of my heart and high blood pressure. Like Jack Tripp, I too have had a pulse rate of over 80 all my 27 years. I too now feel lousy. I've noticed i'm light headed, have verdigo, sick to my stomach anytime I put anything into it. I take 25 MG a day. I do not reccomend these meds to anyone.

I am 22 years old. I've had a heartbeat of 150+ bpm for as long as I can remember. My heart doc put me on atenolol 2 weeks ago, and it instantly lowered mine to 65 bpm. I am dragging something terribly. I have college at 11, and I am bearly able to make it to class on time. I guess the only positive side effect of this medicine is the "sexual side effects", it makes it hard to do certian stuff... but then again, who has the energy for 45 minutes???? I am not sure if it is because I am just starting this particular med or not, but I hope that my system adjusts here before too long, I am not sure if I'll b able to continue to function... although the lack of hunger has dropped my weight 4 pounds in 2 weeks....

ive been taking atenolol for about three weeks and have noticed a tremendous change in heart rate and blood pressure. I have not experienced any of the side effects mentioned here, i think maybe less of a sex drive im 37 so i hopes that passes. But i feel more energetic than i have in years so i recommend it highly. you also have to find what works for you i was on some other meds and had an adverse reaction to them

I have been taking 5 mg of atenolol now for the past 3 months. I have been overly tired, I have swelling just below calf to the ankles, and I have at times been very dizzy. If I take a water pill with this med for the swelling them forget it, I feel sick and have no enery. I was wondering if anyone else has had any problems with swelling?

Atenolol was prescribed by my nurse practitioner to remedy newly onset whole head headaches that lasted all day long. The headaches may have been pushing my blood pressure high, so Atenolol at 25mg was thought to help both. It took a month to adjust. On re-check of BP, the dosage was increased to 50mg 1x/day. The exhaustion, dizziness, weak legs, slight nausea, lethargy, and the headaches all returned and persisted 6 weeks later. It was difficult to get through a day, and often felt like fainting at least once daily. I actually felt my best 2-3 hours before my next dose (presumably, the med had worn off). 4 days ago, I saw the doctor and am going off the Atenolol (in steps) and am taking a migraine med (depakote) instead. The thinking is that once the headaches are treated, the BP will normalize. I'm waiting for the fatigue, dizziness and weak legs to go away.(as well as the headaches!)

I had problems with swelling, loss of energy, unable to exercise and dizziness. It has been over two months and the symptoms have not gone away. Please let me know if your symptoms have gone away and how long did it take? Marcia melissa wrote: I have been taking 5 mg of atenolol now for the past 3 months. I'm 46. Two years ago I had a pulse of 119, now usually with slight high bp (146/98), and I was placed on Atenolol (25mg), I kept experiencing it, so the doctor increased it to 50mg. I went to the doctor's today right after work because I felt like I had been running all day, and I could just tell it was climbing. Once there they took my bp, which was fine, but my pulse was 90, by the end of the visit, the doctor had increased it to 100mg. Does anyone else take such a high dose? I'm really afraid to, I feel so sluggish as it is, and depressed about the whole thing. Debb in MA

Yes I take 100 mg of Atenolol. I was increased from 50mg to 100mg, however, the side effects stayed about the same. I find that the dizziness, fatigue, etc. come and go now that I have been on it about 2 years. I have noticed that my hair is getting thinner and thinner. I have read that this is also a side effect.

I am a 78 year old prostate cancer patient on hormone therapy. As a result I am always fatigued. I experienced rapid and uneven heart beat and my cardiologist prescribed a daily dose of 50 mg. Atenolol about two months ago. The stuff worked great. No more rapid heart beat and a pulse rate in the low 60's. However I got to the point where I could barely lift my feet to walk. I had to wait two weeks for an appointment so I arbitrarily reduced my dosage to 25 mg. The doc was unhappy but my walking has improved markedly and the heart rate is now in the upper 60's. My cardiologist does not believe Atenolol could cause the problem. He should read the comments on this web site. I need a new cardiologist.
