I don't drink period since being a bad alcoholic, and don't recommend even occasional drinking .. it makes it that much harder to stay sober in my opinion.

I asked for antabuse right away after failed counseling attempts, campral, etc., but i did find reluctance with doctors to prescribe it. However, when I found a doctor who DID prescribe it, it was the best thing I've ever done, outside of admitting my failure to control my alcoholism.

For those reading this who have family members with alcoholism, I suggest really looking at antabuse as a good option. It especially works well alongside AA, but I've been fine with antabuse alone (and I was a *BAD* drunk). It's kept my marriage together, and me away from a drink for a long time. I've slipped on antabuse, but didn't get drunk, just feeling awful, flush, red faced, etc. and that persists to be a deterrent.

i have been on antabuse 250mg/day for 15 days. i haven't drank, and after 10 or more years of chronic drinking this is almost a small miracle. really it takes choice out of the equation for me. i still have to deal with the shit in my life for which alcohol was always a ready escape, but i have to do it sober. i'm sure the reason doctors hesitate to prescribe is because antabuse is not a cure for alcoholism - it's a tool which if used in conjunction with others (self-help, therapy), can help the alcoholic control his/her drinking. people go to their doctors telling them what drugs they want to be on and that isn't really the way it's supposed to work. however, my doctor was eager and willing to prescribe to me because i had attempted meetings and therapy and needed something more. so far so good, i still look for that escape, and like an earlier poster, i smoke weed. it doesn't impair me like alcohol did, and it's nowhere near as problematic or dangerous. i think sobriety is ultimately the answer for me, it's just hard to get there.

I just started taking antibuse - day 2 - is anyone scared of the sideeffects outside of the effects from drinking? I have read online the damage it can have on your liver. Is this something I should be concerned about? Also I don't feel I have 100% of my witts -ie i do feel dizzy and lathargic. Is this common ? Does it go away. If this means no more damage from AL abuse in my life then I am willing to stick to it. I have tried AA for 5 yrs and have not been able to stay sober. I just wish I had confidence that taking this pill will not cause damage. Thanks

Antabuse IS amazing if you take it everyday and don't stop occasionally to drink. I have made that mistake AGAIN and i feel really quite ill. I can actually feel my swollen kidneys inside me and my stomach has pains. When i was taking my perscription of antabuse i never even thought of alcohol. When i stop taking it, alcohol takes over my mind and i think of nothing else.

I have been taking antabuse for nearly three weeks. I took my last one Tuesday and I plan to try a drink this evening. I'm scared but I will sip and see what happens. I wonder if because I work out everyday and have a high metabolism, if i'm less likely to have any reaction. All kinds of thought going through my thick head.

I have taken antabuse at several times throughout my life. I have other medical problems which can make alcohol very dangerous as it interacts with several of my medications. You can use anatabuse intermittently; but, you should carefully plan your stopping and starting regimen as it takes different amounts of time for different people's matabolism to eliminate the drug and allow for normal non-interrupted metabolism of alcohol. I generally allow at least 5 days wothout taking the med and then test with a very small (1/4 oz) amount of alcohol. The interaction with large amounts of alcohol or compromised health can be fatal. Also, i always allow a minimum of 36 hours after the last drink before i rresume the antabuse. Bottom line, be very careful and if you are unsure, coordinate with your doctor... NEVER rely on what you find online as you are unique as si your health and metabolism

this is why i need to take antabuse permanently.£42 on vodka over 1 weekend, 4 bottles from just one shop (what must they have thought!), jumping over allotment fences, losing keys to house, losing keys to allotment shed, sleeping in the shed, falling over in puddles, ripping my jeans, having to ring landlady for new key, meeting up with for new key looking like a right tramp, missing a day from work, not sleeping at all, and then finding out that you only have £31 to last you 2 weeks until next pay day. i am such an idiot. i hate myself for last weekend and guess what? i'm 37 years old. it's definitely back on the antabuse for me PERMANENTLY!

My guess is that the reluctance to perscribing Antabue is due to liability, if a patient is not deemed as a responsible risk then using this drug can be an immediate danger to ones health.
