Iam currently taking campral for alcohol abuse, I have been sober for5 months, but still find myself wanting a drink, my psycologist suggests that I take antabuse as needed ie: when on vacation, or when I have no support around, for the times when the temptation is really high. Has anyone had any experience, taking antabuse this way

Right Nick old chap splendid !
In Ga. DUI is very servere on the wallet and if they catch you to much, jail time. Antabuse has made me forget about alcohol 90 % of the time only one month in. |

it kind of sucks to have to take it, but if you can manage to just take the damn pill every morning you wont drink period no matter how much you want to if you have the mildist idea about how miserable youll be if you do. without antabuse id prob be dead. i smoke weed to stay sane and while im not encouraging it, i do find that it helps someone like me who always needs a vice...of all the vices weed is ok by me. still intoxicating, but its not dangerous etc. in fact, i find myself wanting other substances less when i smoke regularly becauses it helps me to put thing into perspective. but, alas this isnt a thc board but an antabuse one. it is the ONLY thing that stopped my drinking. i would be dead without this. try it for you.

My husband asked to be put on antabuse and the doctor said it only for people whom have been sober for a while.Does anyone know of a doctor, whom it willing to prescribe antabuse for someone whom is struggling with sobriety?

I have been "abusing antabuse" for about 3 1/2 years. My current regimen is 2 pills each day (Sunday-Tuesday) and 1 on Wednesday. This allows me to drink Friday and Saturday. Sometimes I'll have a mild reaction on Friday; I stick to lite beer.
I've also gone weeks at a time starting with the same 500 mg/day dose and getting by with 1/2 pill per day indefinitely. This keeps me sober. Regarding doctors, my current physician refuses to prescribe antabuse. He wants me under the care of a psychologist. Maybe he's right, but in the long run, anything that keeps one sober only part of the time can't be bad. |

Hi griff. I don't believe it is only for people who have been sober for awhile. My friend had it prescribed immediately after going to rehab for 7 days. I didn';t notice where u live but any good doctor will give it to someone. After all, it's really to save their life as well as others. Check out other doctors. There should be no need for a urine I don't think because why would someone request it from their Dr. if they were not serious. Most people, who are NOT serious about quitting drinking do not want to take it cos they know it is supposed to make you ill if you mix it with alcohol. If u want more info on it, go into a medical site, maybe WebMD to look it up. Also a pharmacist can inform you better and may be able to recommend a doctor. good luck |

I was just wondering if anyone has heard of Naltrexone and Piracetam. You might want to ask your doctor about them. Used together they've had great results. They're also not as dangerous as antabuse.

Don't know piracetam but naltrexone has shown some good results in conjunction with cognitive behavioral therapy. I don't think Naltrexone alone offers much hope.

Nick, I live in Macon. My husband has tried rehab and counseling and has not had any success. I was wondering, did you go to a health doctor or a psychiatric doctor to obtain antabuse?

My husband has been through treatment...to no avail. He is still sneaking around and drinking behind my back. This WILL end our marriage very quickly as it is a miserable life for all involved, us as well as our children. He seriously wants to quit and just can not handle the control that alcohol has on his life. He just decided to order antabuse as a last resort. It seems that with insurance, if prescribed by a psychiatric doctor, it may be covered. However, we just ordered online through USA Pharmacy Pills. We are looking forward to getting them and along with meetings, hoping that this will help him find the inner control to quit. I think it is worth a try when your health, relationships, family, etc are all on the line.

Hi.
I've just started taking antabuse, and haven't had a drink for a week. It's actually ok and I haven't had any withdrawal symptoms; I'm sure if I weren't taking it I would have had a drink, so I'm kind of pleased with myself. Two questions, first, why are so many people reluctant to prescribe/administer it (my dr wasn't, but the drug counsellor was, slightly) I think it will help me sort my drink problem out. Second. I am committed to taking it at least till Xmas, but then I'd like a week or ten days back on the booze, only to take it again in January. Is this sort of thing possible? Like, I guess, many alcoholice, I want to stop drinking but not forever and always. Any comments? |

Wow, you sound exactly like me. Its like I told my husband....I like to drink on occassion. I was thinking the same thing about the holidays and parties. I'm looking for answers to the same questions. |
