FYI - I finally got over the dizziness, weakness, and nausea but not before becoming severely dehydrating and ending up on a drip 6 days later. still have a rash on my upper outside arms looks like a sunburn. The effects lasted almost a week before I felt like I was getting back to normal - never again. Good luck to all of you out there in similar situation.

My 8 months old baby was diagnosed with tonsillitis after a couple of days high fever and decreased appetite, and was prescribed with amox. Ten minutes after taking her 1st dose, she slowly started to develop small red rashes on her face and neck. Took her to same dr, but dr wasn't sure if it was allergic reaction so he just advised to monitor and to continue taking amox. I wasn't convinced and decided to stop amox as fully aware that rashes develop after taking amox and knowing that my husband is allergic to it. After several hours, rashes progressed to her torso, arms and legs and they were getting bigger. Went to see an after hours dr and was told definitely stop amox and also there was no need to take further antibiotics because she has viral infection, not bacterial and he didn't think she has tonsilitis. The next day she was feeling much better and no fever. She still has the rashes which actually worsened even after stopping amox but was told that will takes days to flush out of the system... I think they over-prescribe antiobiotics/amox. Misdiagnosis brought us more problems.

I know it's been a long time since this post, but I thought I'd try to contact anyway... I took Amox for 11 days. After about 5 days, my scalp and ears began to itch quite consistently. I didn't think much of it. Too much sun, I supposed. Then by Day 11 I saw hives all over my torso, some on my arms and legs. I also had the itchy palms and bottoms of my feet. What prompted me to go to the ER was the swelling inside my mouth. Inside of the cheek, some on the tongue, on my face - upper lip and chin. By the time I was seen by the ER doc there were little signs of anything. My breathing never seemed to be affected. Since that ER visit, I took diphenhydramine (Benedryl) on and off, mostly at night as my flare ups occur mostly between 12am and 5am. After a week or two of that, I decided to get off the stuff, not wanting to be dependent on anything daily. A few days later I suffered a huge reaction, initiating on my face, then spreading to my torso, as usual. Thankfully, the ER doc saw some of the symptoms, but wasn't convinced it was due to the Amox. They hooked my up to IV, pumped some steroid in there and some more diphenhydramine and sent me on my way. I filled a prescription for Prednisone (against my gut - but I want out of this!) and I am taking my last of a 4 day supply (3 pills a day) today. It's been ONE MONTH since I STOPPED taking AMOXICILLIN and I am still reacting. Itchy palms and bottoms of my feet, in the middle of the night esp. Do you happen to recall how long your symptoms lasted when all was said and done?? This is really getting old!

Nicole,
(Hello former neighbor... I am a NoVa native recently relocated south...) I am curious to know how long, start to finish, your symptoms lingered. I started Amox for sinus infection on June 4. By June 15 I was in ER b/c of hives and swelling on face and in mouth. By July 10 I was back in ER for more facial and inside mouth swelling. Got the steroids and the Prednisone script and am at the end of my 4 day (3 pills all at once each day) supply. Thankfully, no apparent side effects to that stuff. But I still have itching on palms and bottoms of my feet. Still break out mildly (and this is while taking the Prednisone). Wondering when I might finally get relief. My worst itching occurs between 12am and 5am. And, yes, my nights have been rather sleepless, as have my husbands.

so great to read all these posts! I too have fallen victim to the rash. I did some reading and was also told by my doctor that there is a big chance that you get the rash, because you are infected with the same virus that gives you glandular fever. Lots of people have this virus in their system with no symptoms. Often doctors prescribe antibiotics for a sore throat, cough, fever, flu-like symptoms. These symptoms may not be the flu but glandular fever. The rash is an indicator of this virus.
So now after having a sinus infection, conjunctiveitis and prescribed this drug, i've broken out in a horrible rash mainly on my feet, legs, hands and arms, and now i'm told that I probably have glandular fever! what a ride! one thing for sure, i'm never taking amoxicillin again! |

I had a dental implant THursday and started taking Amoxicilline 500 mg every 6 hours starting the evening before the implant surgery. My scalp has been itching like crazy every since but don't have an apparenty rash anywhere else. I hve also been taking methylprednisone the day of the implant.I finally called the dentist last Saturday night and advised her of what I thought was a reaction to amoxicillin, which I never reacted to before. THank goodness I am on prednisone, I'm thinking. The itching drives you crazy. hopefully this will pass soon.

i took the meds. for an abcess and started having symptoms... rash, hives, itching and trouble breathing. to make a long story short, after two different doctors and a visit to the er, they gave me a good shot of pred. and it gets better on and off. the er dr. said that the symptoms could last for months! SO SOME OF YOU OUT THERE MIGHT HAVE TO DO LIKE I MAY HAVE TO. HE SAID that i might have to be on a regimine of one pill every other day. hope this helps!!!

I was going to have some dental work done and my dentist wrote me a prescription for Amoxilin. Four pills 500mg and he said for me to take them all at one time one hour before my appointment. I took them as he said and that night I woke up with both of my legs killing me.They were so sore that I could not even touch them. I also have a headache which I hardly ever have a headache. I think that he gave me too much of this at one time.

AUGMENTIN 625mg co-amoxicillin (amoxicillin and clavulanic acid) was prescribed to me upon leaving hospital. This antibiotic gave me terrible headaches and I felt so ill and so depressed that I could not last the 7-day course prescribed. I did force myself to take it for 5 days but then could not stand to continue. Days later I had mad itching: feet legs ears nose and now I've noticed a red rash on my legs

Hello.
I'm in a bit of a predicament. Recently i started taking amoxicillin for a serious cough due to a cold and just found out my boyfriend is allergic to the medication. I myself have no allergy to the medicine what so ever, but I'm afraid of causing him a reaction. I've tried looking information up on how a reaction is triggered, but I've had no luck in finding the answers i need. Basically what I'm asking is, is it safe to become intimate with one another, even though he has this allergy? |
