I have been taking ambien for a few years. I have worked up to a serious dependency where I take about 5 mil every couple nights. I know this does not sound like much but this is when I cave in to all my efforts to not take this drug and am overwhelmed with craving. I feel like such an addict. Once I start taking it again, I go for about a week taking it and increasing the dose until I am up to 10 milligrams. My family has no idea. I have also had wine with this because I feel it increases the euphoria and I know that I can seriously OD.
Has anyone on their own kicked this horrible drug? I cannot go to rehab and will only keep trying on my own. I take benadryl when I am trying to not take ambien and I go for about a week until I think a small amount of ambien won't hurt and I will go right to sleep. I suppose that this doesn't help because it is such a stresssful time for me but I feel like such a fraud and I am afraid of the long-term health damage of this drug sill be. any help would be appreciated

buckely - I suggest you read the forum topics on "My experience getting off Ambien...and tips..." and/or "Ambien Withdrawal and Headaches" They have really helped me. You, my friend, are addicted to a sleeping aid.

To quote a forum post from HL Haller written to me: "Ambien is similar in many ways to benzodiazapines (valum, xanex, etc.). The withdrawl syndrom for those drugs is much, much longer than for opiates (which is what most people think about when they hear withdrawl). Plan on managing your symptoms for several months - I'm not trying to disuade you from stopping, I just want you to know what you are in for. Making multiple failed attempts to quit may make it harder, so I advise making a plan and sticking to it." This is what will happen to you if you keep going the direction you are going. Read the other forums and you will see what I'm talking about.

I only take 5 mg per night but have built up a dependence and the side effects are horrible-tired all day long even after sleeping. Since I am only taking a small dose, how to I taper off? I am splitting a 10 mg pill now. I won't off this drug-insomnia is not as bad as this drug!!

Are you sure your sleep cycle isn't messed up or you have another health condition or something? 5mg of Ambien is nothing. You shouldn't have any problems. Also just stop taking it if you think its bad. I can't imagine any withdrawal from a low dose like that.

Does any one know about detoxing from ambien or clonzepam from an IV drip? I heard it is a 7 day process.

I have had insomnia since I was 2yrs. old. My mother also suffers from the same degree of insomnia. I don't remember having a full and restfull night's sleep before taking this drug. My doctor finally prescribed me Ambien after I went 60 days in a row with less than 2hrs. of sleep a night and occasional 3-day stretches of no sleep at all. I could barely function, could not eat or work, and was unable to drive. The first night I took the pill, I was out.

My doctor advised me to not take Ambien more than 3 or 4 nights in a row, even if it meant I did not sleep at all. When I do this, Ambien works better and I have less side effects. My doctor also prescribed Trazodone, which is non-addictive and makes you sleepy. The best, non-addictive combination I have found has been combining the two drugs on separate nights, more sleep-less side efffects.

FYI, with Ambien I have also had the side effects most everyone (it seems) has had... I have a tendency to confess EVEYTHING, have sex, eat and even gone out with friends and not remembered anything until I see phone records and text messages chatting about things I have no recollection of... All of this honesty and uninhibited behavior has had some benefits. People in my life know EXACTLY how I feel about them, and has forced confrontations that I had been avoiding, resolving some long-term issues...

If you are feeling addicted, scale back slowly and look into trazodone, ect. It also have excellent anxiety-lowering effects!

Happy sleeping!!!

Ive been taking Ambien since 2004. It does exactly what I want it to do; puts me to sleep. Sometimes I dont stay completely asleep all night, but thats okay. It doesnt effect me the next day, and I feel fine. However, I do try to go right to bed after taking it since I tend to head right to the kitchen. It does make you forget things you did the night before, so go RIGHT to bed. I only take one 10 mg. and sometimes just 5 mg. If I have to take it forever, oh well. If I dont go right to sleep at night, my next day is shot. Its worth it to me. There are a lot worse things to be addicted to.

Wow, I didn't know so many people experienced the same addiction to ambien as I do. I was first prescribed it at the age of 16 (I'm now 24). My doctor kept me on it for months and ever since I have had periods of being on and off the ambien.

I was recently forced to begin detox after going through 3 bottles in 4 days (30 pills in each bottle). Being 5'3 and 105 lbs I have no idea how I survived. Since the risk of seizures is high I sought out an addictionologist -- an MD specializing in detoxing. He put me on anti-seizure medicine -- on a schedule which slowly reduces the amount. It was also recommended I do outpatient CATS and NA/AA meetings.

It is so hard to be off of it. It has only been 4 days and I crave it ALL the time. The cravings are so intense I spend hours searching my room incase I might have dropped a pill.

It is reassuring to know I'm not alone....please respond if you would like to converse one-on-one. I do not want to post my email but I would like a support system :)

ambien is similar to a benzo although chemically different. you will have the same withdrawls from ambien that you would from xanax or klonopin.
try reducing your dosage slowly and you should be ok. i take 10mg generic ambien. it puts me right to sleep but i have no incidents where i do things in the middle of the night that i don't remember.....although i can't figure out where this $80,000 came from wrapped in bads of $100 ( just kidding....it was only $50,000)
seriously, hang in there, reduce your dosage slowly and you'll be fine.

Go to a drug rehab center. You need it. Warning to anyone taking Ambien or Ambien CR: it is a dangerous drug that is advertised as not being addicting. It is very addicting and will ruin your life. The most dangerous part - you won't even know it is happening.
