I have been on Ambien for 3 years. 2 pills a night, sometimes more. It rules me. I want OFF - or at least taper off to one at bedtime. Any ideas

After one week of abstinence from Ambien, I felt sick, drained, shakey, and had nothing but nightmares and sweats. Night before last I slept 45 minutes. I had my Ambien filled yesterday. Last night I took 1 Ambien and knocked out and slept the best I felt I had in months and months. If NOW taking 1 a day for the rest of my life is what I need, I'll do it. On the brighter side, other than my Zoloft for Anxiety and Depression, I take nothing else and don't drink either....so.........

Detox from Ambien? Wow! I have taken it for long periods, and had no withdrawals after I went off of it (except I couldn't sleep).. But everyone is different.

Lisa Beth1005:

Two, sometimes more? How well Ambien works depends on what you have eaten/drank at least within two hours before you take it. For instance, if I eat dinner an hour or so before I took my ambien, I almost guarantee it will not be effective. Foods high in fat also prevent the full effect of Ambien, as does caffeine. At least that has been my experience.

I have never taken two before. One has seemed to always be enough. My suggestion would be to cut back to 1 1/2 for several nights, until your body
adjust. Then cut back to 1 for several nights until your body adjusts. Then 1/2 for several nights, then go off completely. Watch what you eat or drink before you take Ambien because it will affect it's effectiveness. Hope I have been helpful, and good luck :)

Do not take an antidepressant in combination with a sleep aid. It is very dangerous.

I just spent 16 days in a detox center for Ambien addiction. While there, I met another woman who was addicted to Ambien. She had taken a pill and gone to bed when her best friend called crying due to the recent death of her husband.

My friend go in her car to go console her friend. She was stopped by the police and arrested for DUI. She woke up in the jail not knowing where she was or why she was there.

After my experience with this drug, I would run from it as fast as you can. It is a dangerous drug. I could have died from the withdrawal symptoms. I did not know that before I went to the detox clinic.

i know ambien is hell. i plan to go to a detox clinc i found on line in florida. i got started on this when my psychiatrist prescribed 6x 10 mg a day.
i have done a research on this topic and although its a lot of money, in the long run, its cheaper than dying. I was in the hospital a month and barely slept. as soon as i got home, you guessed it.i went straight for the medicine cabinet and HAD to feed this craving. the problem is that this isnt a simple matter of topping. once you know theres "a fix" for your pain, depression, you cant stop unless you get good behavioral modification. unfortunately for me, i am very impatient and i didnt respond to behav. mod. anyway, i plan to go to this new clinic which promises results in 6 days. i am scared of withdrawal and relapse. this drug has ruined my life.

Ryan, I feel your pain for sure. I stopped ambien 08/07/08 and I was in the ER with severe withdrawal on 08/08. I will remember that date forever. One of the ER nurses said "The Chinese believe this is a day of luck....08/08/08." The doctor was really honest and told me that the next two weeks were going to be horrible, and he was right. I was shocked that it took that long for this crap to be out of my system, but it did. I am so glad I was able to stay off of it. I don't ever plan on getting back on it but the mental cravings are what I struggle with. This board helps me get through it though. I didn't quite fit in at the AA meeting I attended and I didn't feel like sitting with the crack heads in an NA meeting, so this board was a wonderful alternative. I hope this brings you some comfort that you are not alone.

I FEEL EVERYONES PAIN FIVE YEARS AGO I WENT THROUGH MY FIRST DETOX. AT THAT TIME I WAS TAKING 15 10 MG TABLETS PER DAY. I WAS BUILDING UP A GREAT POLERANCE FOR THIS MEDICATION. PILL ARE TOO EASY TO GET WITH ON LINE SHOPPING. SINCE THE GREATIST PROBLEM WITH ABSTINANCE IS SEIZURES I FOUND A DETOX FACILITY THE PROGRAM WAS 5 DAYS. MANY PLACES WONT TAKE AMBIEN PATIENTS. MY HONEST ADVICE CALL AROUND FIND A DETOX THEN JOIN AA OR NA. AMBIEN IS A DANGEROUS DRUG

anyone that is taking the time to post in this forum has a problem with this drug. the good news is you can get off of it. expect to feel like hell for 10-14 days, you will not sleep, suck it up. it's worth it. go to aa/na meetings, even if you don't "relate" they will help you feel better. try to exercise, even if it's just a walk. get a few good books to read throughout the sleepless nights. pray, pray, pray...God will help you through it.
