Hello all, I’ve been on Accutane now for about two months. This is my second time taking it (My first dosage was three years ago, I'm a senior now), and let me tell you, a freshman year filled with those nasty side effects wasn’t too fun. But the worst of it back then was just chapped lips, really… this time around I feel it’s much worse. I’m honestly feeling 100% depressed, hating myself all the time. I’ve been grounded the past few weeks, and that doesn’t help really. A month ago I couldn’t love myself more, right now though… I guess it’s just a mixture of school and the Accutane side effects. I’m getting really bad back pains when I try and step on a court or field (pick-up athletics are apart of my life), and my skin… I used to have an olive skinned complexion, but I feel that ever since I stopped taking my first dose it has become more pale, AND red spots on pale skin aint exactly that pretty. So I sit here and I inquire a few things: Shoot me some tips on staying fresh in the winter on this medication, and how the hell can I stop these joint pains. They’re honestly killing my self-esteem because I’m not able to go out there and give it my all when working out. ANY help would be much obliged.

ive been experiencing some major joint pain myself...my muscles are weak and my spine is sore...and right now, my posture sucks. from what i hear, its only temporary and it gets better with time. ive been on tane for about 40 days...so lets wait and see.some pple take vitamins and such..but that might interfere with ur progress..i dunno...ask ur derm.im going to see my 'hot shot' beverly hills derm in 2 weeks...ill let u know what he says. regarding the pale complexion, i too hve fair skin ..maybe some tinted moisturizer might do the trick.
i hve a question for you.i hear that many taners relapse after a few yrs..why is that?i am very very concerned...i beg to god i dnt relapse after the tane treatment because if i do, i probably wont even consider going back to tane.i hear its too toxic to take more than once in a lifetime.after ur first treatment, did ur derm reccomend anything to maintain the clear skin?and what about acne scars..did the accutane help with that too..or did u hve to do laser treatments?
thanx

Well I'm only 17 years old, so I guess back when I was 13 I took my first dosage. Over the next two years it gradually got worse and worse, and I was put back on all those nasty creams and pills that didn't work. I asked my regular doctor if I should go back on Accutane, and he said it's really not safe to go back on a second time. So I was a little nervous...
This summer I went to see a new dermatologist. She took a look at my shoulders and said she was going to put me back on Accutane. She also said that it's normal for people to do a second dose, and that about 20% of the people who take accutane need a second one. After that, she said it's incredibly rare to need a third one.
Believe me, I may sound like a female with all my bitching about skin, paleness, but trust me it matters to me. I've worked hard over the past two years to get myself in shape, from the inside out.
But to answer your other questions: No my derm didn't give me anything to maintain clear skin (though he didn't even give me more than one blood test). And Accutane, after I was done my first go around, helped clear up my scars nicely. I can even see the effects now...
One thing I can say for sure is that my Acne wasn't really as bad as it was the second time I needed to go on Accutane as it was the first time.
It's up to you though...
Accutane gives me this feeling of hope. Like, I don't look in the mirror, and despite all my hardwork, I have these red spots on my face that I have absolutely no control over. When I see them now I can say, just have to wait a few months and I'm golden. The only problem while being on Accutane is all that I've mentioned. The depression makes me lose interest in things I once loved before, it makes me HATE myself. I wasn't the most mentally competent person to begin with before they put me on this... lol.
I just need to get a grip, but trust me, trust in your dermatologist. If she/he says you'll be fine, you'll prolly be fine.

Try taking Glucosamine Sulphate for your joints, takes a few weeks to kick in, but works extremely well. As for depression, take one tablet less a day. Accutane actually works better in smaller doses over a longer period, just take one less a day AND for god sake keep hydrated.
As for the paleness, it happens, at least theres no more spots. Having acne for so long just makes us more vain. Something that has to be ignored sadly. After the course is over, get tanning :D
