I was taking Acutane at age 27 (35 now) when I was diagnosed with a weird case of type 1 diabetes; right after quitting acutane. It has drastically changed the quality of my life, ruined my teeth and many other aspects of life.

My daughter took Accutane at age 16 in 2003. She has always been an very athletic, healthly person. While in college she was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. A year later, doctors told her she had type 2 diabetes that they contributed to her thyroid. In January 2009, at 22 she has been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The difference is type 2 is usually associated through genetics, a family member or may result from obesity. Type 1 diabetes however, like thyroid disease is an autoimmune disease. Type 1 diabetes usually occurs from a virus or attack on the autoimmune system. It seems way too coincidental that so many young adults have been diagnosed with Type 1 after using the Accutane drug. My question is did this drug effect the body system and liver function to make it venerable to contract this life-long, life threatening disease? My next question is what year did the FDA add high blood sugar and diabetes as a serious side effect to taking Accutane? I found it in the 2008 FDA warning, but I am unsure if it was there in 2003. I was also not aware of that being a precaution to the iPledge contract. I feel for anyone who may have contracted this disease and are now insulin dependant. It is not a reversible disease it is life long and can lead to many other health related issues. I feel that the drug company is responsible for not being more informative and doing more research. Unfortunately, no monetary value can cure Type 1 diabetes! Best wishes and good health to all!

Hi,
Did you ever find anything out about the accutane and type 1 diabetes? Or did you try it? I am 25 with type 1 diabetes and got approved to start accutane but just wanted to find out experiences of diabetics who tried the drug.
Thanks!!!!!!!!!
