I have been reading many of the postings here and have to add my two cents. I am a 42-year old woman and just finished a six-month course of accutane. I have battled with acne since I was in 5th grade, and did a course of treatment with accutane about 12 years ago. The first course kept my skin fairly clear for about eight years and then it returned just as bad as it was the first time. You would think at my age my skin would no longer be an issue, but it is. This most recent course of accutnae worked wonderfully and my skin is clear again, but I've been off the accutane for about two months and the oilyness is just beginning to return. The derm said it would return, maybe in a month or maybe in six months, but probably not as bad as before. I did some internet research to find out what I could do to keep the oilyness from returning, because as we all know battling the oily skin is the root of the problem for acne. I found that some people want to take a low-maintenance dose of accutane for an indefinate amount of time. But in order to do that you need to buy the accutane online, becasue the derm will not prescribe it for that type of use. I am reluctant to do that.

But another thing that I stumbled across was the use of Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic acid). It's sold in 500mg capsules at the health food store. I decided to try that first as a more healthful alternative. I've only been using it for a week, and already noticed a dramatic difference. I take four 500mg capsules with dinner, and another four at bedtime, and beleive or not, no more oily skin. And I mean none! And in addition my energy level has shot way up. I don't understand completly how it works, but somehow, people with acne have a B5 deficiency and they can't process fats properly. If you take extra B5 your body can process them better, and creates less oil on the skin surface. Has this worked for anyone else??? Like I said it's only been a week, but I've noticed a mesurable difference.
