Accutane, Back Pain & Depression

Hey - I'm about a month and three weeks in to Accutane and this week has been terrible as far as side effects are concerned.
The pain/tightness in my lower back and hips have sent me home from work and have slowed me down every shift I had. I stay in bed when I'm not at work or school (which is a culmination of the relief I feel from the pain for the most part when I lay down and also the depression that I've been struggling with the past couple of weeks). I don't know.

I don't know how to treat it. My back and spine feel like they're in a vise, and my hips feel bruised. Especially after a shift at work where I'm standing the whole time, I just feel immobile.
The depression is getting to me as well.

I'm a very melancholy person naturally so I wrote it off as just being stressed for a while, but the past few weeks I've only existed in the context of school, work, and my bed and have no desire to do anything.

Has anyone else struggled with this stuff or anything similar and has any pointers or tips? I'd appreciate any help I can get.

Hey Rebekah,

I've definitely heard of people having joint or muscle pain and depression while taking accutane.

For the join pain, try drinking lots of water and joint health supplements like glucosamine with chondroitin.

The depression could just be due to the side effects and the obviously the pain. Try to focus on how great your skin will look when you're done with your accutane course.

What dosage are you on?

The normal dosage is .5 to 1 mg per 2.2 pounds of body weight.

For example, I weigh 180lbs and was on 80mg per day, which is at the top of the normal dosage range.

Talk to your dermatologist, maybe you could go on a lower dosage.

I have been on this from http://g-isotretinoin.info for 3 months now and have noticed a massive improvement of my acne. The acne on my back is practically non existent and the amount on my face has dramatically improved. i cant believe they are still prescribing this shit. it causes permanent back pain. for me at least i took it for 3 or so months and that was 6 years ago. still have back problems from it its a persistant presence. I fought with acne throughout my teenage years and tried everything to get rid of it (proactiv, neutrogena, retin-a, clean and clear, you name it). I experienced quite an initial breakout soon after I started accutane but was expecting it and told myself my skin would get better. I’m now in the last week of my treatment and my skin is flawless. I haven’t had a single zit in 3 months, and scars from my previous breakouts are fading. If your in doubt that accutane can solve your acne frustrations, don’t be. Survive the first two months or so of accutane and you will be rewarded with the complexion you’ve always wanted.

None of these things really worked for me; it would only suppress my acne. BTW.. Don't let anyone stop you from taking this medication... it works and no one should suffer with acne!!! I have one more month so lets hope I get 100% clear!! I'm at about 88%
