Has anyone found any solutions to the joint pain? I have already had a left labral hip surgery to hopefully fix it but I still have neck and back pain. Has anyone tried taking a anti-depressant to treat the pain? When my mother had joint pain they put her on effexor. I know that adding another drug adds more side effects but I know it worked really well for her.

Does anyone know how soon after you start taking the accutane that the symptoms appear. It's day 4 for me and I think i'm starting to feel pain in my wrists, knees and hips, but i'm not sure if it's actually because of the accutane or if i've just turned into a hypochondriac from reading these posts.

I took Accutane when I was 36 in 1995. I am now 50. I have joint stiffness like an old person. I read that less than one percent of patients experience joint pain or stiffness. I don't believe that. The stiffness started in my very early forties and every year gets worse. Not worth getting old prematurely.

Hi,

my doc just put me on isotroin (thats the brand available in india for isotretinoin). i am takin 80 mg per day since the last 20 days.

a couple of days back i had slight pain in my ring finger. when i woke up the following morning, the pain had increased tremondously, not just that, my finger joint was stiff and swollen...later my entire hand was swollen and the pain was unbearable....i went to an orthopedician...n he asked to me get my blood tests done...the blood reports showed and increased CRP (C Reactive Protien)....the normal raneg is 6 mg/dl...and mine had shot up to 19 mg/dl...i am really worried and scared....

i am not sure if this is because of the meds or do i have rheumotoid arthritis....i m S*&T scared....coz i am the only one to take care of my schizophrenic mother....i cant afford not to work and earn....

I was on Accutane for only 3 months my levels (triglycerides and cholesterol)shot up so high they had to take me off. I got so stiff one day at work someone had to help me out of my chair...12 years later I awake every day to swollen, stiff and extremely painful joints. I am unable to sit still or hold anything for more than a few minutes without cramping up. I have been tested for arthritis with a negative outcome…but no one can tell me how to stop the pain and stiffness.

Julie I understand exactly what your saying. Have you had any scans, bone scans, dexa scan or xrays? Try some hydrolic acid(spelling?) try getting some Vitamin D and a good Magnesium pill.
Try getting your Vit D levels checked and total Vit D levels then determine the dose you need.
I am on 2,000 iu's.
Accutane can cause osteopenia and osteoprosis,it can also cause bone spurs in the neck and spine, sometimes the wrists.find a doctor that will listen and get it checked out.

I've been having joint pain recently too. Been on 10 mg a day for about 7 months now. Previously I've had some knee problems, but they symptoms were not so bad as currently.

I HOPE it has nothing to do with the Accutane I've been taking, because it's important to me, not to clear the acne but to help with suspected rhinophyma.

I'd say, if you have joint pains, don't do heavy impact sports to try to get rid of it. You're only going to make it worse. Stock your body up on glucosamine to strengthen the cartilage that you already have and go see an orthopedist to confirm this.

I think I'll see an orthopedist soon about my knee pain for an MRI and I hope to God it hasn't deteriorated because of the Accutane. Gosh. Scary, isn't it?

I looked on line and saw that many accutane takers are experiencing the same as I am. I was worried that I had something really wrong with me but I can see now that I am just suffering the side effects. My skin is much improved but my feet, joints, back and neck make me feel like an old woman. I hobble around. I am wishing everyone on this drug the best of success. I am still weighing the pros/cons as I feel horrible.
Jill, did it ever get better?? I'm starting with the same thing and wondering do I continue or not..?

I am so glad I found this forum. 2 Years ago I was on accutane for roughly 5 months. Towards the end of the session my derm and I agreed to increase the dosage (had horrible side effects throughout). Last week of my session, I overdosed and had horrible tinnitus. Woke up the next morning with every hair on my body thinned and dried out, as well as every pimple on my back and chest gone. I quickly went to my derm and told her to get me off this drug, but was embarrassed and didn't talk about my overdose. I went back to normal accept for the topical symptoms and had no other complaints. Fast forward 1.5 yrs and I had ankle pain, which has ascended to every joint and tendon in my body (including jaw, fingers, ribs{intercostals},etc...) Last month I developed Urethritis, epididimytis, and prostitis. This week I have become Impotent and seen physical changes in my genitalia. Everyone believes I have contracted a virus or a clamidia, but that's impossible since I have never had sex. I bet my life that these horrible symptoms are from accutane. They are shockingly similar to another poster of this forum's experience. My family is in medicine and has done an insane amount of tests-no infection, no inflammation, no rheumatoid factor,etc... My cholesterol is 120, on paper I'm the healthiest patient in the office my dad says. My hyaluronic acid levels are in normal range, which was extremely disheartening because I wanted it to come up deficient.
I have done roughly 50hours of research on retinoids and have a new theory: We all know that retinoids can change transcription of cells, and impact the extracellular matrix of the body (responsible for joint lubrication, joint shock absorption, and connective tissue,etc...) I honestly believe that the symptoms I feel are Extracellular matrix related: pain in the eye sockets (passed eye exam with flying colors) dry and painful crepitis in all fingers and joints. Pain in vocal chords, connective tissue areas along the nose, tubes of the genitalia, burning lungs, etc...
Since my hyaluronic acid levels are normal, I believe now that I lack the necessary enzymes(or they dont work properly) to breakdown the glue that is hyaluronic acid. There is a disease called MPS type 9. There has only been 1 case of this ever recorded. MPS' are genetic, but the reason I bring this up is because this patient had a hyaluronidase deficiency (she was born that way). I am not saying I have those, but I have similar symptoms. Her pain began in the ankles, and when the pain moved to a new area it stayed for roughly 3 days. I have had the same exact thing. My symptoms came on extremely strong for 3 days, ex. prostitis gave me difficulty urinating for 3 days, now it is just painful.
Over the past months I have had to deal with more physical confusion, pain and restriction that any person, especially a 21 year old should have. Here is the craziest thing: Lets say I have to do an all nighter studying (college) or sleep a very small amount. My joints start to become lubricated again, they have shock absorbing capability, and I can actually walk up the stairs in school without taking the elevator, aint that some crazy shit. My theory is that the Hyaluronic Acid becomes more brokendown and can permeate the synovial membranes of my joints. I desperately wish to undergo more testing to see if I lack these enzymes, but we've just had a death in the family, and things are busier than ever, so I guess I'm gonna have to wait some more. If anyone has questions or comments, post them, we need to get our lives back. p.s.- has anyone seen a post or heard from that Greg guy who had similar symptoms? I want to know how his condition is, and to see if he is okay.

Chris- I would suggest going to this post here on topix and bring up the link that Ncc/Insider posted at the end. http://www.topix.com/forum/drug/accutane/TBO1...

Also I would google bill Sardi who wrote about hydralic acid and retinoids/accutane. It is on E-books use to be for free, but I think is about 5 dollars.

As for Greg-he use to post on another fourm and I believe he ended up on predisone(which is not good long term) he had numerous of tests, took numerous supplements and narcotics with no releif.
If you would like a link to his posts on the other fourm let me know.
I recently was just dx with severe arthritis by having a xray of my hand for something elese. I am hoping to have other tests and a bone scan to see what type of arthritis this poison caused.

good luck
