I've been off it now for 11 days and my joints are still aching. Does anyone know how to get this toxin out of the body?

They say that it stays in your system for about a month. I am sure that that it will take a good month or two till you are back to your old self trust me I am looking forward to that day to.

Glucosamine Sulphate 1000mg tabs, one a day. Will notice no joint or soft tissue aches or pain within a few weeks, but mind you it does take a while to kick in, so stick with it.

Of course I am not a doctor so ask your doctor if you are taking anything that may react poorly with it (I was fine with Isotretinoin and Glucosamine Sulphate).

Also, you will get compliments on a glowing complexion, for some reason it really does do this, but dont expect acne improvements, i only mention it as a joint ache remedy.

Good luck, let me know how it goes

Have the doctors given you a work up? What do they say is the cause of the joint pain?

I am 26 and I took Roaccutan (isotretinoin) for about 6 years including breaks. I did about three normal high dose treatments but the acne always came back after 1 month. So I tried a low dose treatment (10mg every second day). This worked almost as good as the high dose treatment but I had less dry skin and eyes. Besides the dryness I didn't have any side effects and I was quite happy about the result. In January 2007 (about 5 years after I took isotretinoin the first time, and after about 2 years of low dose treatment) I had some pain in my wrist-joints when i worked at the computer (i study informatics so I use the computer a lot). The pain appeared only occasionally. Because I didn' pay a lot of attention to it, the pain got worse. In July 2007 I had to quit an internship as a programmer because the pain got so strong and I feel it now from my wrists to the shoulder. Until today (April 12th 2008) it didn't get any better although I took a long break from the computer and tried several anti-inflamatory pills. I finally stopped taking isotretinoine in December 2007 because I thought maybe isotretinoine is the cause for my pain. After reading the posts on this page, I could kick myself for not stopping taking it earlier! Now I am "clean" for about 4 months, but my pain situation didn't improve. I guess it takes longer until my body heals because I took this s*** for such a long time (I am still optimistic to lose the pain!). My skin doesn't look very good because the acne came back (not as bad as before), but now I am old enough to live with it and I hope as time goes by it will get better by itself (I heard isotretinoine can slown down the natural evolution of the skin, so if I took it for about 6 years my skin is still a teenager although I am 26). I have visited at least 4 different doctors including a rheumatologist because of my pain but noone could tell me what I have. I don't have carpal tunnel syndrome. One doctor told me I maybe have fibromyalgie but he's not sure. Well... what do I want to say with this post? I am interested if there is someone who has similar symptoms? And I want to warn everybody of taking isotretinoine. My skindoctors all said that isotretinoine is not that bad. I believed them because I only had dry skin as a side effect... at the beginning.

What I forgot to say: I also did a lot of sport (fencing) before the pain started. Now I am trying to do a lot of sport again to lose the pain. I am tired of just waiting and sitting around.

I have this as well 6 years post accutane and have read countless stories of the same.

Vertabrea and right shoulder for me. Ive been able to make progess using some things to alieviate the damage.

Joint damage is caused by accutane shutting down the body's hylauronic acid production which dries out synovial fluid membrane in joints and it also effectively destroys cartilage and drys out the skin.

Hylauronic acid is a water retention molecule. Also found in the skin as it joins with collagen.

This is why your skin drys out and causes delayed wound healing, fragile skin. Dry skin is further compounded by: caffiene, dehydration and dirty protien in the diet.

I reccommend going online or to your health food store and getting some hylauronic acid. More is not better as far as dose. Then drinking plenty of water after to saturate it.

Keep collagen bonds tight by using the basic building blocks to collagen: Lysine, proline and vitamin C.

Lysine/Proline are amino acids. find a combo product and then for the vitamin c use natural source such as fruits: kiwi, mango, oranges, 3 times daily spread out, or a whole food form vitamin c product such as acerola cherry powder 3 times a day.

Synthetic vitamin c is lacking co-enzymes and bioflavinoids which surrounds the ascorbic acid like an envelope that the body uses to unwrap the ascorbic acid and process it, fruits contain them which is why fruit resolves scurvy symptoms and ascorbic acid doesnt.

Investigative reporter, Bill Sardi discusses hylauronic acid and accutane.

Hello silverado,
I exactly understand what you are going though 'cause I have been suffering from long term latent side effects for almost 4 years...cannot beliece that it has been that long...I thought I would get much better but that was not the case for me..I am trying to be hopeful but it gets harder when I am so sick that I cannot even do simple normal things like sitting down and work...so depressing... I feel useless, worthless sometimes..I try not to feel like this but I acnnot control these feelings.
My worst problems is insomnia, joint pain especially mu lower back...I never had any joint pain before accutane..I could not understand when some people complain about low back pain or insomnia...I never imagained in a million years that I would suffer from these crippling conditions for years....

Tom,

I know what you are going through as well. You are not alone.

I also had absolutely no joint/vertabrea problems pre-accutane and had before and after MRIs and they are drastically different.

The MRI tech pointed out the damage and wondered why it happened so rapidly. I told him that I took accutane and he said......"yeah that will do it".

The "before" MRI was for a routine physical. The after was due to the joint problems post accutane. It proved its devastating effects.

It does effect the mind as well. Mostly for me while on it people started to notice my anger fits and withdrawl. My mother said "Arent you happy any more".

Other people started to notice things in my mood and they didnt even know I was on accutane. "Damn dude what the hell is wrong with you".

Try and follow the advice above along with good wholesome raw food building blocks to reconstruct joint damage and provide the raw material building blocks for seratoni (mood) and energy. It is making a difference for me.

Dave
