Drug addiction is a horrible thing to happen to anyone.....it destroys, and touches everyone around the user. And Ms Bossy........some people become addicted through no fault of their own.....it can be as simple as a broken leg, or surgery, then they just can't stop, and the Dr keeps prescribing it because they complain of pain, and before you know it, it spins wildly out of control.......I've seen it happen many many times.

Addictions can be overcome, talk to anyone in AA, NA or the like, they'll tell you the same thing. She did something stupid, there's no argument there, but to call the woman an "animal" writes her off as hopeless forever and I will not do that.

If Sarah DeSpiegelaere gets off with just a slap on the hands that will send the message that taxpayers are now paying for the drug habits of public employees, that would be an outrage. Premeditation can certainly be found in these felony thefts, with her having a stock pile of the stolen drugs in her home. This was definately not a theft by opportunity. Whether she has a prior criminal history or not, which is not mentioned in any of the news reports, she needs to be held accountable for her actions. As for being transferred to a hospital for a 72 hour hold, could she be trying to obtain sympathy from officials, judge, public by indicating she either a. has a mental health problem so how could she be held responsible for what she's done, or b. has she threatened to to take her life for reason listed above and also taking the cowardly way out of standing up to her responsbilities. What a loser this person is, how did she ever become a nurse, who, as it happens swears "to abstain from whatever is injurious and hurtful and will not take or knowingly administer any harmful drug". Justis demands to be served.

Or they steal it, like it, and steal more and more until they are caught, then claim they have mental health issues and that's the reason why they shouldn't be held reasonable for their actions...so actually a person can be at fault for their addition. picklesnorkie wrote: Drug addiction is a horrible thing to happen to anyone.....it destroys, and touches everyone around the user. I'm came to this board because I am a recovering addict who made the bad decision to get on methadone several years ago because I didn't want to go through the withdrawal. It was a mistake and I'm now off methadone completely. I come to this board and a few others to hopefully warn others about going on methadone. I assumed most of the people here are either recovering addicts or family members of addicts who want to voice their opinion and share their experiences. What I didn't expect was for someone like Ms. Bossy to come here and say all addicts are losers. Once a person is an addict they are always an addict. Even those in recovery. We will always be addicts in recovery. So I'm an addict but I'm not a loser nor have I ever been. I have done some things that were selfish, destructive, and hurtful. Those words describe my actions but not me as a person. If anything, I've learned how strong I am.

Look what she has done to innocent kids. I'm sure that friends/neighbors of these kids know who their dad is, and has either seen or heard that he was arrested and in the paper because of drugs. Image the embarrassment and anxiety they're going through because of the choices their stepmother made. Addiction or not, she worked in a jail for heaven sakes, she was fully aware that she was committing a crime, but obviously thought the consequences were worth the risk. Selfish, self-centered, altruistic and unconscionable people such as Sarah DeSpiegelaere do not have a place in a childs life. Hopefully justice will be served and the punishment is comparable to her implacable actions.

The one thing that I have learned about addictions is that this illness differs from many other chronic medical diagnoses. Here is what I mean. For example, when a person is diagnosed with cancer they have two choices. Either they can "fight" the disease with MD prescribed chemo, radiation and so on, but when one is recovering from ANY addiction,; Alcohol, drugs, sex, eating disorders, etc. they are not awarded the two choices as described above. The disease of addiction is one that looms over them FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES! And to "stay sober, etc. " is an everyday fight for the rest of their lives. In other words, I'm not saying a diagnoses of cancer, Pick's disease, Moya Moya disease ,MS or spinal (complete) cord injury is "better" but addiction to anything and freedom and recovery are a life long battle. People who suffer from addictions are people who are sensitive and hurt easily. They need help and not judgement. Lets all get together and try to help someone they know and/or love stay sober in today's world. Much better than negative fingerpointing. Sincerely Carrie
