I would like to make corrections to the information on Ohio microdistillers. The micro license was first used in Ohio, by us, in 1999, not 2008. The ability to sell from the distillery became law in 2008. Prior to that, all liquor was sold from licensed agencies for Ohio Liquor Control. Currently (2010) there are only 3 of these self-sales permits available to Ohio counties with a population density of 400,000 or more. This would encompass the metro areas of Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati. Woodstone Creek orginated this legislation and took the first permit for Hamilton County. Middle West claimed the permit for the Columbus market. Hopefully Cleveland will follow suit with it's own micro soon. Other micros will be able to license spirits production, however, they are restricted to selling to the state's warehouse system and will not be able to do self sales from their own locations.

You say microdistillers in Ohio are only permitted to sell their spirits at the distillery. This is incorrect. Ohio micros are required to sell all spirit to the state liquor control warehouse. If they are lucky enough to have one of 3 permits available - in the entire state - for self sales, then they can sell to consumers much the same way a regular liquor store does.(It is a little more complicated than that - but that's the simplified version.) The state still gets theirs ....

There's a great new micro distillery in Maine too - the Northern Maine Distillin Co. that produces Twenty 2 Vodka. It's really top shelf stuff.
