With hundreds of cocktail recipes and a several hundred varieties of spirits and beers available from all over the globe many bartenders must have excellent recollection skills to have remembered all of it. If you are observant you can see a bartender does not have to scan the pages of a recipe book for recipes of cocktails right? After you have placed your order he instantly prepares the ordered drinks flawlessly. All you do is place your order and some how your bartender already remembers how to make the cocktail. He serves it up to you instantly without much thought. It will not matter if there are many thirsty patrons from across the bar ordering mix drinks, beers, wines and liquors all at the same time, the bartender still manages to handle all the different cocktails very well. How are bartenders able to do this? It's simple; he uses the power of mnemonic devices. These mnemonic devices help bartenders memorize by heart the recipes without much thought.
Being able to do tricks with bottles is not the only thing that's important in bartending. Yes, having great skills is important because you have to work fast and smoothly when bartending. But you also have to have a good memory to remember your drinks.
You need to know them by heart. Memory is very crucial in bartending. However, you don't have to spend a lot of money just to go to a bartending school, taking bartending courses, sitting there for long hours, reading from bartending books, listening and trying to learn how to make drinks. These days, a cheaper and alternative training system on how to learn bartending has been engineered. This training tool will really be of interest to you, if you are the type who wants to learn how to bartend at your own pace and in the comfort of your own home then you need to try this training tool. The training tool uses mnemonic sentences to help you remember mixed drinks.
A mnemonic is a device also known as a memory assistant. Studies have shown that our minds are more inclined to remember complex information by means of letter patterns, ideas, or word associations. For several centuries, people have been using mnemonics and other memory techniques to retain hard-to-remember information with much ease. Mnemonic sentences are widely used in bartending. This is the secret of the best bartenders in town. They make use of fun words or poems as a substitute to the arbitrary names of drinks. In this manner, they are able to remember the mix drinks easily.
Here are some samples of mnemonics sentences in bartending:
" Café Gates (Grand Maria's Brown Gates)
-½ oz. Grand Marnier
-½ oz. Tia Maria
-½ oz. Brown Crème de Cacao
- Fill with coffee
" Ex on The Beach (Very Pretty Or Cute)
- 1 oz. Vodka
-½ oz. Peach Schnapps
- 1 3/4 oz. Orange Juice
- 1 ¾ oz. Cranberry Juice
" Kamikaze (Very Tragic Landings)
- Vodka
- Triple sec.
- Lime
These are just a glimpse of some mnemonics to help you memorize many mixdrinks. Each mnemonic sentence is only for a specific mix drink. So its hard to make a mistake in mixing the wrong drinks. And this is how the bartenders do it! They make use of their memory in remembering the mnemonics.
