This is a completely unfounded myth.
No one can claim to be the originator of bourbon. There is no proof, one way or the other, as to who invented all the standards that compile todays regulations, as to what bourbon is, as a product.(and remember...what bourbon is today...is not what bourbon was back in the late 1800's. They barely resemble each other in flavor profile)
It is more likely that it was a compilation of many different techniques from many different distillers of the day.
Even today...there are many different techniques from one distiller to another, that make each product unique from the others on the market.
Lastly, the distillers of Ky back then, were the same people that were fleeing Pennsylvania and other States. So, they didn't invent something new....they just used different ingredients using their same techniques that they used in their home state.
The charred barrel, which seems to get the most attention as a bourbon technique....had been in use for hundreds of years in France to make Cognac. So, that wasn't invented in Ky either.
