If your interest was piqued a couple of weeks ago when Scott Reitz told us about his bottle of Balcones single malt whiskey, or perhaps even before that you read about it in The New York Times , well, you're in luck.

The spirits being made at Balcones are excellent and unique.
Tons of quality and they make EVERYTHING themselves.

Doesn't every distillery make everything themselves?

No. Every distillery doesn't make all of their own products.

Most vodkas are made by a handful of producers. Then shipped out to the person who bottles and labels it for themselves.

Many of the new bourbon labels aren't made from scratch at one facility. They are bulk whiskies made at a different site by a different company.

What some end producers do is....take a product that is made elsewhere...then add water to it, or filter it, or add flavorings; then they bottle it and call it their own product.

It is important to read on the label: Produced BY...not Produced FOR. Or, Distilled and Bottled by....Not, Distilled and Bottled FOR.

Some examples of stuff made by someone else but claimed to be made by themselves is:
Bulleit Bourbon and Rye, Tito's Vodka, and Templeton Rye. Probably about 90% of American vodkas are produced by Archer Danials Midland in Illinois. Then they are either bottled there or sent by tanker to the end bottler to be sold by a completely different liquor company.

It doesn't necessarily make the product bad. You just don't need to spend extra for a product that isn't totally truthful and honestly made.
