Check out what is really going on! Please follow the Canadian-owned Barrick Gold Mine in that tiny impoverished country. What agreement did the Politicians there make. Who is benefitting from it?How do the Dominicans benefit from their land being stripped to nothing. What about the lakes being contaminated and the meager livelihoods of the people on that small piece of Island being threatened for someones financial gain.... What a disgrace. Sounds so familiar!

Thank God the Puerto Ricans in the island for many years banded together through community based and grass roots organizations to prevent the same thing from happening in the island. Puerto Rico has significant copper and nickel reserves in the western mountainous portion of the island (Adjun tas and Utuado). Mining companies from the U.S were for many years intrested in stripping our beautiful island of it's precious reserves. For what? To destroy some of the beauty of our precious Cordillera central and replace it with a lake in it's place. Sheer lunacy!... The vast majority of the wealth generated by these reserves would most likely be spirited out of P.R anyway just as in D.R and many other lesser powers..........I'm afraid that if P.R were to ever become independent. They would attempt to explore this area once again and this time succed due to P.R having to strive economically on its own and not having the protection od various U.S based enviromentalist organization to help fight on its behalf. It is a future realistic scenario (though a frightening one) that if P.R were to become independent these rich mountainous lands can become nationalized and exploited for their resources. This being done out of sheer desperate economic desperation and neccesity. May that never happen! The Cordillera Central is the soul of our Country!.........TPMP
